二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Last week, I bought an alarm system(报警系统) for about $ 450. It consisted of a control unit with three other small units. I put the control unit in the sitting room and fastened the other units by the front door, back door and living-room windows. The instructions told us to choose three numbers, so we chose 491, the last three numbers of our telephone number.

Now I must explain how the alarm works:

    1. There is a power siren(警报器) in the control unit. It makes a very loud noise.

    2. Each of the small units sends out beams(光束) or rays in different directions. If anything moves, it breaks a beam. This sends a signal to the control unit. The siren makes a noise that you can hear 50 meters away.

    3. When we go to bed, I press the three buttons numbered 4, 9 and 1. Then we have 30 seconds to get out of the room before the alarm starts to work.

That might I slept soundly because I was sure that no burglar(夜贼) could get into our house. However, at about 2:10a.m., I woke up and heard the siren(警报).

“There must be a burglar in the house,” Mary said. “What shall we do?”

“I’ll go and see who’s there,” I said. “Stay here. Don’t make a noise.”

I went downstairs quietly. When I reached the living room, I switched on my torch and looked round the room. Then I turned the light on. I switched the siren off and searched the rooms downstairs. There was nothing wrong except that the back door was unlocked. I locked it, re-set the alarm and went back to bed.

About an hour later, the alarm started again. I jumped out of bed, fell over a chair in the dark and bumped into the bedroom door. Mary woke up and started hitting me with a torch. “Hey! Wait a minute!” I whispered. “It’s only me. I’ m going downstairs to see what’s wrong.”

I went down into the living room and listened for a moment. The only sound I could hear was the siren. I turned on the light and then switched the siren off. As I did so, I glanced across at the curtains in front of the windows. I saw a house lizard (蜥蜴) disappear behind the curtains.

“Oh!” I said to myself. “That’s our burglar.”

When the lizard moved, it started the siren. I guessed that the alarm had been made in Europe, where there are no house lizards.

Well, I won’t finish this story but if you want an alarm system free of charge, let me know. I’ll send you ours. We bought a dog this morning. It knows the difference between a lizard and a burglar.

【1】The writer bought an alarm system to   .

    A. make sure that he got up early every day

    B. warn him when there were lizards in his house

    C. frighten burglars and tell him that somebody had got into the house

    D. make Mary feel safe to live in the large room

【2The purpose of the three units was to   .

    A. send a message to the control unit and start the siren

    B. sound their own sirens when the control unit told them to

    C. check that the control unit worked properly all the time

    D. give them enough light

【3】What can we learn from the passage?

    A. A burglar broke into the writer’s house.

    B. The writer’s wife was attacked by the burglar.

    C. The alarm that the writer bought must be made in Europe.

    D. It was a lizard that broke into the writer’s house.

【4】The purpose of the writer in writing the passage is to .

    A. tell us that the alarm system doesn’t work

    B. tell us an interesting experience

    C. show us how the alarm system works

    D. make it clear that he wants to give away his alarm system

  • 22、Elena Yi dreamed of pursuing piano performance in college, never minding that her fingers could barely reach the length of an octave (八度音阶). Unable to fully play many works by Romantic-era composers including Beethoven and Brahms, she tried anyway-and in her determination to spend hours practicing a Chopin concerto, wound up injuring herself.

The efforts of Professor Carol Leone from the Southern Methodist University (SMU) are changing all that: twenty years ago, the school became the first major university in the U.S. to introduce smaller keyboards into its music program, leveling the playing field for Yi and other piano majors.

Yi, 21, tried one of the smaller keyboards, “I remember being really excited, because my hands could actually reach and play all the right notes,” she said.

For decades, few questioned the size of the traditional piano. For those with small hand spans (掌距), it’s difficult to properly play many works of Beethoven and Brahms. Those who attempt to play them either get used to skipping notes or risk injury with repeated play. Leone is familiar with such challenges. Born into a family of musicians, she favored classical music and pursued piano despite her small hand span and earned a degree as a doctor in musical arts.

The idea of smaller keyboards first met resistance from some traditionalists. Leone also said that when she raised the issue with one Viennese professor, he told her there were already too many pianists anyway.

Though such resistance is fading, there are some very traditional people who think of piano as a competitive thing. Leone said, “This is art, not sport. It’s about making as much beautiful art as possible, and we should give everybody the opportunity to do that.”

【1】Why did Elena Yi find it hard to play a Chopin concerto so well?

    A.Her fingers got injured.

    B.It was time-consuming.

    C.Her hand spans were small.

D.The traditional piano was out of tune.

【2】What is paragraph 4 intended to do?

    A.Summarize the previous paragraphs.

    B.Add some background information.

C.Introduce a new topic for discussion.

    D.Provide some advice for pianists.

【3】What is the Viennese professor’s attitude towards smaller keyboards?

    A.Disapproving.

    B.Objective.

    C.Unclear.

    D.Positive.

【4】Which is the most suitable title for the text?

A.Yi’s Road to a Brilliant Artist

    B.Hard-working SMU Professor

    C.Traditional Piano: A Competitive Thing

D.The Story Behind Smaller Keyboard Pianos.

The idea goes back as far as 1942. That year, a young man named Ian Allan was working at Waterloo railway station in London.3, and quite a lot of the questions he received were very similar. He found himself getting a little annoyed at sending the sine replies to the same questions .so he had a word with him boss. The brochure he wrote was the earliest version of the FAQs (常见问题) you see on websites nowadays.

The first 2,000 copies were all sold in days, and by the 1950s, a million copies of British Railways Locomotives were selling every year. Ian Allan went to become a successful publisher, and got an Order of the British Empire(OBE,大英帝国勋章) from the Queen in 1995.5.

  • 24、Some 128 baby squids from Hawaii are in space for a study. The baby Hawaiian squids come from the University of Hawaii's Kewalo Marine Laboratory. They are about 7.6 centimeters long. There are plenty of these tiny animals in Hawaiian waters. The squids will come back to Earth in July. They rode on a SpaceX spacecraft along with thousands of kilos of supplies for the International Space Station on June 3.

Jamie Foster is conducting the study as a researcher at the University of Hawaii with the help of Dr. Margaret McFall-Ngai, a member of the National Academy of Sciences. The Honolulu Star-Advertiser newspapers reported that she studies how spaceflight affects the squids. The research, started in 1989, can help scientists learn about human health during long trips in space.

Squids have a relationship with natural bacteria that help them control their giving off light. Margaret said, “When astronauts are in low gravity, their bodies' relationship with bacteria changes. Bacteria are very important to the human body and health. The relationship of humans with bacteria is disturbed in low gravity, and Jamie has shown that it is true in squids," said Margaret. "And, because it's a simple system, she can get to the bottom of what happens."

“As astronauts spend more and more time in space, their immune systems don't function well,” Jamie said. "Their immune systems don't recognize bacteria easily. They sometimes get sick. Understanding what happens to the squids in space could help solve health problems that astronauts face."

She said, "The immune system does not work properly on long spaceflights. If humans want to spend time on the moon or Mars, we have to solve health problems to get them there safely.”

【1】What's the purpose of the research?

A.To know the situation in space.

    B.To study squids' living conditions.

    C.To check astronauts' immune systems.

D.To help solve astronauts' health problems.

【2】Why do the squids become the object of the research?

A.They have a relationship with space.

B.T hey can control their giving off light.

C.They have something in common with people.

D.They can solve the problems of natural bacteria.

【3】What is Margaret's attitude to the research?

    A.Uncaring.

    B.Positive.

    C.Uncertain.

    D.Curious.

【4】Where can the text be found?
