二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Gardeners are often puzzled by the sudden appearance of an unusual orchid(兰花) or sometimes are disappointed that their annuals have vanished. Scientists have discovered that some British flowers can lie dormant (休眠的) under the ground for up to 20 years, coming out to bloom only when the conditions are just right. Orchids seem particularly good at being dormant for years at a time, the scientists discovered.

Michael Hutchings, Professor of Ecology at the University of Suss, said: “Being underground means they cannot receive sunshine, neither flower nor reproduce. And yet this study has shown that many plants in a large number of species frequently go through dormancy (休眠). Many of these species have found ways to overcome the loss of sunshine during dormancy, especially by gradually developing their ability to get what they need from soil. This allows them to survive and even grow well during dormant periods.”

The research found that dormancy occurs when the weather is poor, or there is a new threat from animals or competing plants. Sometimes winters are so mild that the plant does not realize that spring has begun. Dormancy in seeds has been widely known about and studied for years, but the dormancy in adult plants is far less well-known and understood.

The study, led by Professor Richard Shefferson in University of Tokyo, is the first detailed analysis of the causes. Dormancy appears to be more common near the equator (赤道), where threats from factors such as disease, competition, animals and fire are more severe. Co-author Dr. Eric Menges said:“ In those areas, it is most suitable for plants to remain dormant and then to grow when favourable conditions exist for growth and flowering. ”

C.Why some species can survive terrible conditions.

D.How the orchid lives through dormant periods.

【3】What can we learn from the passage?

A.Dormancy in plants is common in regions along the equator.

B.Orchids are the only plants that can be dormant for years.

C.Dormancy in seeds is far less well-known and understood.

D.Most gardeners don’t want to plant orchids.

  • 22、You may think that sailing is a difficult sport, but it is really not hard to learn it. You do not need to be strong. But you need to be quick. And you need to understand a few basic rules about the wind. First, you must ask yourself, “Where is the wind coming from? Is it coming from ahead or behind or from the side?” You must think about this all the time on the boat. The wind direction tells you what to do with the sail.

Let’s start with the wind blowing from behind. This means the wind and the boat are going in the same direction. Then you must always keep the sail outside the boat. It should be at a 90° angle (角度) the boat. Then it will catch the wind best.

If the wind is blowing from the side, it is blowing across the boat In this case, you must keep the sail half way outside the boat. It should be at a 45° angle to the boat. It needs to be out far enough to catch the wind, but it shouldn’t flap (摆动). It shouldn’t look like a flag on a flagpole. If it is flapping, it is probably out too far, and the boat will slow down.

Sailing into the wind is not possible. If you try, the sail will flap and the boat will stop. You may want to go in that direction. It is possible, but you can’t go in a straight line. You must go first in one direction and then in another. This is called tacking. When you are tacking, you must always keep the sail inside the boat.

1What should you consider first while sailing?

    A. Wave levels.   B. Size of sails.

    C. Sailors’ strength.   D. Wind directions.

2What does the word “It” underlined in Paragraph 4 refer to?

    A. The boat.   B. The wind.

    C. The sail.   D. The angle.

3What do you have to do when sailing against the wind?

    A. Tack the boat.   B. Lower the sail.

    C. Move in a straight line.   D. Allow the sail to flap.

4Where can you probably find the text?

    A. In a physics textbook.   B. In a tourist guidebook.

    C. In a popular magazine.   D. In an official report.

  • 23、   October 15th is the Global Hand washing Day. Activities are planned in more than 20 countries to get millions of people in the developing world to wash their hands with soap. For exampledonors(捐赠者) will give 150000 bars of soap to schools in Ethiopia.

Experts say people around the world wash their hands every day, but very few use soap at so-called important moments. These include after using the toilet, after cleaning a baby and before touching food.

Global Hand washing Day is the idea of the Public-Private Partnership for hand washing with soap. Partners include the United Nations Children's Fund, American government agencies, the World Bank and soap makers Unlever and Procter and Gamble. The organizers say all soaps are equally effective at removing disease-causing germ(细菌). They say the correct way to wash is to wet your hands with a small amount of water and cover them with soap. Rub(揉搓) it into all areas, including under the fingernails(指甲). Rub for at least twenty seconds. Then rinse well under running water. Finally, dry your hands with a clean cloth or wave them in the air.

The Partnership for Hand washing says soap is important because it increases the time that people spend in washing hands. Soap also helps to break up the dirt that holds most of the germs. And it usually leaves a pleasant smell. The Partnership for Hand washing also says washing with soap before eating or after using the toilet could save more lives than any vaccine(疫苗)or medicine. Hand washing could also prevent the spread of other diseases. When people get germs on their hands, they can infect(感染)themselves by touching their eyes, noses or mouths. Then they can infect others.

1What's the best title for this passage

A.Say no to washing hands in the wrong way.

B.Find out why washing hands carefully is so important.

C.Hand washing so important-it gets a day of its own.

D.Want to live a longer life-wash your hands.

2The last paragraph mainly tells us _______.

A.how to wash your hands correctly

B.why washing hand with soap is so important

C.the dangers of washing hands without soap

D.when we should especially wash our hands with soap

3In which part of newspaper would you most probably read this passage

  • 24、Is running a marathon (马拉松) under two hours possible? Will a human ever be able to run that fast? Now, the world record for the 42.195km (26.219 miles) distance is held by the Kenyan runner Eliud Kipchoge. His time of 2:01:39 hours was achieved at the Berlin Marathon of 2018.

But studies published in the past have come to the conclusion that running a marathon under 2 hours can be done. They even see a time of around 1:57 as the fastest a human can ever run. However, we may have to wait longer for this to happen.

To achieve an under two-hour marathon, an athlete would have to have the perfect body size and weight, the right running plans and of course, the right nutrition (营养). Today’s perfect runners come from Kenya and Ethiopia, countries that have dominated (占优势) long distance races for years. East African athletes have long legs and lungs that can take in lots of oxygen (氧). Training at high altitudes (海拔) gives them a strong heart. Ideal weather conditions with cool temperatures and no wind will also be needed to attempt such a mark. An extremely fast marathon would only be possible on flat city courses, like Berlin or London.

Since the beginning of the modern Olympic Games in 1896, athletes have tried to run long distance races as fast as possible. In 1900, the marathon world record was at around 3 hours. In the following 30 years, men were able to reach a mark of 2:30. But in the last 15 years, the world record has improved by only 3 minutes.

On the other side, some experts think that such fast performances will only be possible with the help of some medicine.

【1】Why is the world record mentioned in Paragraph 1?

A.To show a human can run very fast.

B.To prove Eliud Kipchoge is the best.

C.To introduce the greatest success in the world.

D.To show an under two hour marathon hasn’t been achieved yet.

【2】Why is it difficult to see a time of around 1:57?

A.It requires too many things to fit together.

B.It isn’t easy to find right running plans.

C.Training a perfect runner takes a long time.

D.Kenyan and Ethiopian runners control marathons.

【3】Which of the following may be important for an under two-hour marathon?

    A.High altitudes.

    B.Lots of oxygen.

    C.A perfect environment.

    D.Tall and strong runners.

【4】What can we learn from Paragraph 4?

A.Men will run faster and faster.

B.Men made the greatest progress in 1930.

C.Achieving shorter time became more difficult.

D.It’s impossible to break the marathon world record.
