二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   When you walk with a backpack, you know how the belongings inside swings from side to side? Now scientists have figured out how to make use of that movement to generate electricity.

Here's how it works. Imagine a pendulum fixed to a backpack frame and fixed with springs on either side. The pack's weight is attached to the pendulum, so the pendulum swings side to side as you walk. Gears then use that swinging motion to drive a generator, and the generator release electrical current to charge a battery.

Volunteers carried the pack while walking on a running machine and wore masks to measure the flow of oxygen and carbon dioxide. Walking with the slightly swing 20-pound load, the device did not significantly affect the volunteers' metabolic rate compared to when they carried the same weight fixed in place. In fact, the energy-harvesting pack reduced the forces of speeding up force they'd feel in a regular pack, which might mean greater comfort for a long hike. And the device did produce a steady trickle of electricity—the key word being trickle.

Because if you up the load to 45 pounds, the passive motion of the pack could fully charge a Samsung Galaxy S10 smartphone only after 12 hours on the way. The details are in the journal Royal Society Open Science.

But here's the backpack difficulty: the energy-harvesting device currently weighs five pounds. The researcher say that's about four pounds too many to be a smart alternative to batteries. So they hope that more research lets them lighten the load, to ensure the pack charges you up without weighing you down.

【1】What does the passage mainly talk about?

A.The working theory of a new electrical device.

B.The working theory of a backpack generating electricity.

C.The discovery of using a backpack's movement to generate electricity.

D.The advantages and disadvantages of using a backpack to generate electricity.

【2】What other benefit does the backpack have?

    A.losing weight.

    B.charging a device.

    C.saving money.

    D.walking comfortably.

【3】Which of the following is most relevant to the amount of electricity?

    A.walking distance.

    B.load weight.

    C.swing time.

    D.moving speed.

【4】Why is there difficulty of carrying the backpack?

    A.The generator is too heavy.

    B.The electricity is too low.

    C.It takes too much time.

    D.The electricity isn't steady.

  • 22、   Almost all researches in sleep explain that nightmares are a reaction to negative experiences that happen during waking hours. However, some of them believe that nightmares do have some real benefits. One 2017 study, for example, found that frequent nightmare sufferers considered themselves as more empathetic (共鸣的). They also showed more of a tendency to unconsciously mirror other people through things like yawning. People who have constant nightmares also tend to think further outside the box on psychoanalysis tasks. Some other researches have found support for the idea that nightmares might be linked to creativity.

People seeking cure for nightmares were not necessarily more fearful or anxious, but rather had a general sensitivity (敏感) to all emotional experiences. Sensitivity is the driving force behind Intense (强烈的) dreams. Heightened sensitivity to threats or fear during the day results in bad dreams and nightmares, while heightened passion or excitement may result in more intense positive dream. And both these forms of dreams may feed back into waking life, perhaps increasing suffering after nightmares, or promoting (促进) social bonds and empathy (共鸣) after positive dreams.

The effects go further still. This sensitivity overflows over into perceptions and thoughts: people who have a lot of nightmares experience a dreamlike quality to their waking thoughts. And this kind of thinking seems to give them a creative advantage. For example, studies show that such people tend to have greater creative talent and artistic expression. And people who often have nightmares also tend to have more positive dreams than the average person.

The evidence points towards the idea that, rather than disturbing normal activity, people who are unfortunate in having a lot of nightmares also have a dreaming life that is at least as creative, positive and vivid as it can be distressing and frightening. What’s more, this imaginative richness is unlikely to be limited to sleep, but also is filled with waking thought and daydreams. Even after people wake up and shake off the nightmare, in other words, a mark of it stays behind, occupying them throughout the day.

1What do most sleep researchers think of nightmares?

A.They have no advantages at all.

    B.They make people more empathetic.

C.They can contribute to humans’ creativity.

D.They are a reflection of waking behavior.

2How can nightmare sufferers probably stop nightmares in theory according to the text?

A.Be more fearful to anxious to nightmares.

B.Try to reduce sensitivity to threats or fear.

C.Avoid excitement as much as possible.

    D.Promote social bonds and empathy.

3What does the underlined word “perception” in Paragraph 3 mean?

    A.Awareness. B.Content.

    C.Relief. D.Determination.

4What can be the best title for the text?

A.The Solution of Nightmares B.The Empathy of Nightmares

C.The Benefits of Nightmares D.The Tendency of Nightmares

  • 23、Your Weak-Tie Friendships Matter

For nearly ten years, I have spent my Monday evenings attending rehearsals for my amateur choir (合唱队). Mondays are not my favorite day, and I often arrive in a bad mood, but by the end of the rehearsal, I usually feel energized. The singing does me good. So do the people. With a few exceptions, I would not describe my fellow choir members as close friends. We exchange brief chats, smiles and jokes — but that is enough for me to come away feeling a little better about the world.

There is no choir practice now, and won’t be for a long time. I miss it. In lockdown, I do not feel short on emotional support, but I do feel short of friendly faces and casual conversations. Another way of putting this is that I miss my “weak ties.”

In 1973, Mark Granovetter, a sociology professor at Stanford University, published a paper entitled “The Strength of Weak Ties.” Until then, scholars had assumed that an individual’s well-being depended mainly on the quality of their relationships with their close friends and family. Granovetter showed that quantity mattered, too. He categorized a person’s social world as “strong ties” and “weak ties.” His central insight was that for new ideas, weak ties are more important to us than strong ones. As Granovetter pointed out, the people whom we often talk to swim in the same pool of information as we do. We depend on acquaintances(相识的人) whom we see infrequently to bring us news of opportunities.

This was the idea behind the Pixar building, the design of which was overseen by Steve Jobs. The building has a large central hall through which employees from different departments have to pass several times a day. Jobs wanted colleagues to bump into each other and shoot the breeze (闲聊). He believed in the power of these seemingly random conversations to fire up creativity.

Encounters with weak ties can be good for our mental well-being, too. Gillian Sandstrom, a senior lecturer in psychology at the University of Essex, investigated the extent to which people get happiness from weak-tie relationships. She found that on days when a person had a greater number of casual interactions with weak ties — say, a local barista (咖啡师), a neighbor, a member of yoga class — they experienced more happiness and a greater sense of belonging.

For these reasons, we should continue to find ways to cultivate weak-tie relationships, during lockdown and beyond. Sandstrom adds that we can also engage in more weak-tie-style interactions with our strong ties. The goal is to let others know that you are thinking of them without asking for a great deal of time, energy or attention.

【1】What can we learn about the author from the article?

A.She has been a keen singer from an early age.

B.She finds her Monday workdays quite difficult.

C.She barely knows most of her fellow choir members.

D.She has trouble maintaining friendships during lockdown.

【2】According to Mark Granovetter, it’s less likely for you to get new ideas from your “strong ties” mainly because you tend to ________.

    A.have the same concerns

    B.avoid conflicts of interests

    C.see each other too frequently

D.be exposed to similar facts and ideas

【3】What is the function of the central hall in Pixar building?

    A.It helps staff build friendship.

B.It allows staff to have a break.

C.It encourage staff to meet and chat.

D.It helps Jobs communicate with staff.

【4】What does Sandstrom want to convey in the last paragraph?

A.We can develop weak ties into strong ties.

B.We should spend more time with strong ties.

C.We should balance weak ties with strong ties.

D.We can apply casual interactions to strong ties.

  • 24、It's thought that around 5 trillion pieces of plastic are currently floating in our oceans.

Both mammals and fish benefit from clean oceans. It is reported that more than 8 million tons of plastic end up in our oceans every year, and nearly half of the plastic we produce is single-use only.

This shoe brand, however, is riding the wave of change and is on a mission to help clean up our waters and rid the sea of plastic bottles that can take up to 400 years to break down. Vivobarefoot's newest footwear uses recycled plastic materials and has created an education program that spreads awareness about how harmful plastic is for sea life.

Every pair of shoes is made up of 17 plastic water bottles taken from the ocean and turned into a sustainable, comfortable pair of shoes, which are also healthy for your feet. And while not everyone can take part in ocean cleanups, choosing little ways we can give back to our planet goes a long way.

Vivobarefoot's new products include a variety of high-performance styles such as casual sneakers, running shoes, and hiking boots. The brand hopes that its latest initiative(首创精神)will help lessen the indifference to pollution and how harmful it is for all living beings.

In the future, Vivobarefoot hopes to increase their production of shoes created from sustainable materials, and thankfully, they are now one of many brands that aim to increase environmentalism and educate communities on how global warming affects everyone.

This year, they'll add more recyclable and traceable materials into more than half of their production line, and they have plenty of creative developments in the works as well.

The shoes also have a health benefit. Based on the concept that wider, minimally designed shoes enable our foot to function at maximum potential, wearers also experience better balance and sensory input.

1How does the author make his point convincing?

    A. By listing figures.   B. By telling a story.

    C. By giving examples.   D. By making comparisons.

2What is Vivobarefoot doing to help with the marine creatures?

    A. Donating money to buy food for them.

    B. Keeping the oceans free from plastic bottles.

    C. Producing more shoes from sustainable materials.

    D. Raising public awareness of recycling and reuse.

3What is probably Vivobarefoot's operation philosophy?

    A. Customer-focused.   B. Service-oriented

    C. Money-saving.   D. Environmentally-friendly.

4Which of the following is True according to the text?

    A. Vivobarefoot's new products haven't been released.

    B. Vivobarefoot is the most popular shoe brand in the world.

    C. Vivobarefoot cares about not only its business but also public services.

    D. Vivobarefoot is the first company to find the new function of waste materials.
