二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、When international aid is given, steps must be taken to ensure (确保)that the aid reaches the people for whom it is intended. The way to achieve this may not be simple. It is very difficult for a nation to give help directly to people in another nation.             The United Nations Organization (UNO) could undertake to direct the distribution of aid. Here however rises the problem of costs. Also tied with this is time. Perhaps the UNO could set up a body of devoted men and women in every country who can             speedily distribute aid to victims of floods and earthquakes.

More than the help that one nation can give to another during a disaster; it would be more effective to give other forms of help during normal times. A common proverb says, “Give me a fish and I eat for day, teach me to fish and I eat for a lifetime.” If we follow this wise saying, it would be right to teach people from less developed nations to take care of themselves. For example, a country could share its technology with another. This could be in simple areas like agriculture or in more complex areas like medical and health care or even in building satellites. Even small country is able to help less developed nations. Sometimes what is take for granted, like the setting up of a water purification plant or the administration of a school, could be useful for countries which are looking about to solve common problems. It does not cost much to share such simple things. Exchange students could be attached for a number of months or years and learn the required craft while on the site. They can then take their knowledge back to their homelands and if necessary come back form time to time to clear doubts or to update themselves. Such aid will be truly helpful and there is no chance of it being temporary or of it falling into the wrong hands.

Many countries run extensive courses in all sorts of skills. It will not cost much to include deserving foreigners in these courses. Besides giving effective help to the countries concerned, there is also the build-up of friendships to consider. Giving             direct help by giving materials may be effective in the short run and must continue to be given in the event of emergencies. However, in the long run what is really effective would be the sharing of knowledge.

【1】According to the author, how could international aid reach the victims in time?

    A.By solving the cost problems

    B.By solving the transportation problems

C.By setting up a body of devoted people in every country.

D.By relying on the direct distribution of the UNO.

【2】What does the author try to express in the underlined sentence?

    A.Providing food is vital

    B.Learning to fish is helpful

    C.Teaching skills is essential

    D.Looking after others is important.

【3】Which aid is likely to fall into the wrong hands?

    A.A medical team.

    B.An exchange program.

    C.A water plant.

    D.Financial support.

【4】What can we infer about international aid from the passage?

    A.It is facing difficulties

B.It is unnecessary during normal times

C.It should be given in the form of materials

D.It has gained support developed countries

  • 22、   In one of my favorite photographs of my mother, she's about 18 and very tall, with long, blond hair. It's the 1970s and my dad is there, too, hugging her from behind

I haven't seen this photo for years. I have no idea where it is now, but I still think of it and, specifically, my mom is in it. She looks so young and innocent. At that time she hasn't yet dropped out of college, or got married. The young woman in this photo has no idea that life will bring her five children and five grandchildren, one divorce, two marriages and a move across the country

For me, as for many daughters, the time before my mother became a mother is a string of stories, told and retold: the time she sold her childhood Barbie doll to buy a ticket to Woodstock; the time she worked as a waitress at Howard Johnson's, struggling to pay her way through her first year at Rutgers. The old photos of her are even more appealing than the stories because they're a historical record, carrying the weight of fact

It is always a comfort from those photos to know that time, aging and motherhood cannot take away a woman's essential identity. For daughters who closely resemble their moms, it must be an even bigger comfort: these mothers and daughters are twins, separated by a generation ,and an old photo serves as a kind of mirror

For daughters, these old photos of our mothers feel like both a chasm(巨大差异)and a bridge. The woman in the picture is someone other than the woman we know. She is also exactly the person in the photo-still, right now. Finally, we see that the woman we've come to think of as Mom-whether she's nurturing(养育), or disapproving, or thoughtful, or supportive, or sentimental--is also a mysterious, fun, brave babe

She's been here all this time.

1What can we know about the author's mother from paragraphs 2&3?

A.She divorced twice all her life

B.Life was tough for her during her first year at college

C.She traveled across the country in her youth

    D.She was good at storytelling

2Why does the author find the photo of her mother appealing?

A.The photo reminds her of her mother

B.Her mother looks young and happy in the photo

C.She wonders why her mother dropped out of college

D.The photo tells a lot about her mother in her youth

3Some photos of mothers bring comfort to their daughters because________.

A.the photos are kept well even after generations

B.the photos record the life of the mothers faithfully

C.the photos help daughters to learn more about their mothers

D.the photos show the essential part of the mothers remains unchanged

4Which one could be the best title of the passage?

    A.The Pictures of Our Mothers

B.Our Mothers as We Never Saw Them

C.My Favorite Picture of My Mother

D.The Way to Learn About Our Mothers

  • 23、In a new study published by the British Ecological Society, experts report that a widely available coffee waste product can be used to speed up the recovery of tropical forests that have been used for agricultural practices.

The study was conducted in Coto Brus county in southern Costa Rica on a former coffee farm. Researchers from the University of Hawaii spread 30 truckloads of coffee waste on degraded (退化的) land in Costa Rica. The team also marked a piece of untreated land. “The results were dramatic,” said study lead author Dr. Rebecca Cole. “The area treated with a thick layer of coffee waste turned into a small forest in only two years while the control land remained dominated by non-native grasses.”

Former tropical agricultural land is often very degraded with poor soil quality, which can delay forest recovery. The researchers found that nutrients including carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorous were significantly higher in the area treated with the coffee waste product. In addition, the addition of coffee waste removed the grasses that dominated the land, allowing native trees to quickly become established.

“This case study suggests that agricultural by-products (副产品) can be used to speed up forest recovery on degraded tropical lands,” said Dr. Cole. In situations where dealing with these by-products incurs an increase in the cost to agricultural industries, using them to recover the forest can represent a ‘win-win’ solution.”

Dr. Cole noted that further research is needed to test the use of coffee waste in forest restoration. “We would like to extend the study by testing this method across a variety of degraded sites in the landscape. Also, this concept could be tasted with other types of agricultural by-products like orange husks,” said Dr. Cole.

“We hope our study is a jumping off point for other researchers and industries to take a look at how they might make their production more efficient by creating links to the global restoration movement.”

【1】How did the researchers conduct the study in paragraph 2?

    A.By analyzing data.

    B.By making comparison.

    C.By making a survey.

    D.By asking for advice.

【2】Which of the following can replace the underlined word “incur” in the fourth Paragraph?

    A.bring.

    B.replace.

    C.maintain.

    D.remove.

【3】What can we infer according to Dr. Cole?

A.They will increase the coffee planting.

B.They will enlarge their research range.

C.They will continue to plant more oranges.

D.They will apply the research to all by-products.

【4】Which may be the best title of the passage?

    A.Coffee waste can help agriculture.

B.Coffee planting can help the recovery of tropical forest.

C.Coffee waste can speed up the recovery of tropical forest.

D.Coffee planting hep with the growth of tropical agriculture.

  • 24、Camelli’s duty was simple: to give back to the community where she was raised. Warren, Ohio lies just thirteen miles north of Youngstown, the former center of steel production, and now one of the neediest cities in the country. Both cities’ populations and its finance have been on the decline each year, with unemployment rates surpassing both the state and national average.

But it wasn’t always this way. Thirty years ago, when Camelli was a student at Howland High School, the school where she now teaches Advanced Placement Psychology, “The poorness level was around 6%,” she says. Today, it is closer to 40%.

This financial condition influences everything from the way students learn, to their ability to deal with social and emotional issues. Knowing this, Camelli created Paw Pantry. Whether it’s for food, clothes, school supplies or personal hygiene (卫生) products ,students and their parents can go on the district’s website and fill out a request form for Paw Pantry products. They can choose to pick their items up—or have them delivered—at school.

Camelli mentioned Paw Pantry when she attended her high school activity in 2017. It made her former classmates aware of how their hometown has changed over the years. “Soon, money started pouring in from all over the country, all over the world,” she says.

In just a year and a half since the Paw Pantry began, Camelli has received plenty of non-perishable (不易变质的) food, clothing, lunch boxes, backpacks, school supplies—even home goods, including a refrigerator, a washer and dryer, and a stove.

Camelli actively shows her students the power of connection. “I’m definitely kinder because of Ms. Camelli. Ms. Camelli is a mother, but she’s also a mother figure for all of us”. Blake says “Ms. Camelli, you will never understand how happy this act of your caring had made me,” she added.

Camelli is a community activist, a mental heath supporter, and by many people’s standards, she’s most certainly a hero, but she doesn’t see herself that way. And that’s what she as a teacher should do.

【1】What does the underlined word “neediest” in the first paragraph mean?

    A.Liveliest.

    B.Riskiest.

    A.Paw Pantry didn’t go well.

    B.Paw Pantry gained much support.

C.Camelli was hopeful about Paw Pantry’s future.

D.Many people treated Paw Pantry with doubt.

【3】How does Blake feel about Ms. Camelli?

    A.Grateful.

    B.Annoyed.

    C.Unconcerned.

    D.Confused.

【4】What can we learn about Camelli from the last paragraph?

    A.She feels great about herself.

B.She won’t continue her teaching career.

C.She thinks that she just does what a teacher does.

D.She doesn’t think she has done enough.
