二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   What does spring mean? For some people, it is the feel of the warm sun or the chance to dig in the garden. For me, it is the return of the osprey (鱼鹰), and this year it has been very special.

In February, a friend asked me to build a bird platform in a patch of marsh (沼泽) in the Town of oyster Bay. It is the best habitat (栖息地) for the osprey, a white-headed bird of prey. With shoreline development making trees more difficult to find, the birds have built nests on tall platforms placed by nature lovers. As a member of the nonprofit group Volunteers for Wildlife for more than 20 years, I’ve placed dozens of them around Long Island. My typical osprey platform is a 3-foot square board bolted (用螺栓固定) to the top of a pole that will stand 16 feet high. My personal touch is to add a natural wooden perch (栖木) a few feet above the platform.

Ospreys prefer nests surrounded by water, so on March 3, I checked the tide tables so that five volunteers and I could plant our new platform at or near low tide. We dug a hole and raised the platform with ropes.

Once planted, the platform was ready for immediate occupation, but I explained to everyone that nature cares little about human wishes.

However, less than a week after the pole went up, I received an email from one of the volunteers. She saw an osprey on our platform. I drove over immediately and saw it, too. Days later, I saw something else. The bird was arranging sticks on the platform. A nest! Wonderful! When the nest is completed, usually two or three eggs are laid. Then, after an average of 37 days, chicks hatch.

【1】Why do volunteers build platforms for ospreys?

A.Higher places seem more attractive to ospreys.

B.Platforms near water are more comfortable for ospreys.

C.Serious pollution makes it hard for ospreys to survive.

D.Ospreys’ habitat has been destroyed to some degree.

【2】What’s special about the platform the author made?

A.With an added natural wooden perch.

    B.With a 3-foot-square board.

    C.With a 16-foot high pole.

    D.With water around.

【3】What does the author mean by “nature cares little about human wishes” in paragraph 4?

A.Whether they did a good thing is still uncertain.

B.Ospreys may not occupy the platform at all.

C.It is likely that ospreys won’t be grateful to them.

D.Man is devoted to a constant struggle with nature.

【4】How does the author feel when he saw the bird building a nest?

    A.Doubtful.

    B.Scared.

    C.Astonished.

    D.Excited.

  • 22、My mother is a diligent and kind woman. She is very busy from morning till night. As a teacher, she works hard.【1】Both my brother and I love her dearly as she loves us.

My mother has been teaching math at a middle school in my hometown. She goes to work early in the morning and does not return home until late in the afternoon.【2】She treats them with patience and teaches them well. For her excellent quality and very good teaching results, she has been elected as a model teacher several times.

【3】Every day, when she comes back home from work, she sets about doing housework, sweeping the living room and bedrooms or cleaning the furniture, and putting everything in good order. She seems to be busy all the time. As she has been very busy working every day, she looks older than her age. But she looks as cheerful and happy as ever. Mother never buys expensive dresses for herself, but she often buys some inexpensive but high quality clothes for us. 【4】She just eats a plain meal outside when she is too busy to cook herself. She lives a busy yet simple life, without any complaints.

Often she says to us, “work while you work, and play while you play. That is the way to be happy and gay. If you do not work, you will become lazy and be of no use to society”. What a piece of good advice this is! 【5】This advice of hers will always serve as a guide to my behavior. My mother is great indeed, and I always feel proud of her.

A.As a mother, she takes good care of us and gives us every comfort.

B.She enjoys listening to classic music.

C.She never goes to expensive restaurants to enjoy meals.

D.She loves her students and cares for them.

E.My mother is hard-working and never wastes money.

F.Can you tell us something about your mother?

G.I never forget it and always bear it in my mind.

  • 23、Should you listen to music when you work?

Do you like to listen to music when you work?

Pose this question at a party, and you’ l probably get some polarizing responses. Some will say they love it, claiming that it improves their performance; others will say they find it distracting and cannot work effectively with music playing in the background.

Interestingly enough, our research has found that both of these perspectives can be true. 【1】

In a recent study, we brought participants into our lab to perform a variety of tasks. They included an easy task-searching through wordlists and crossing out words containing the letter “a” and a more difficult task-memorizing word pairs and recalling the partner to each word. Some participants completed all of the tasks in silence, whereas others completed the tasks with instrumental music that was either loud or soft, and either simple or complex, the latter meaning music with more instrumental tracks. Several key findings emerged from our study.

We found that participants who listened to simple music or no music performed about the same on the easy task. 【2】

Conversely participants performed worse on the more difficult task when they listened to any music, regardless of complexity or volume, compared to those who didn’t listen to any music.

What should we make of these findings?

We suggest that people have limited mental resources from which both music and tasks can draw. 【3】 But we also can become overstimulated and distracted when these resources are overwhelmed.

Not surprisingly, we typically need to use fewer of our mental resources when we perform easy tasks, whereas demanding tasks require more brainpower. However, because we might be less engaged during easier tasks, there’s a greater risk of drifting off. Music might give us the extra boost we need to plow through the monotony(单调). 【4】 Listening to music can become overkill.

So optimal performance should occur when we strike a “sweet spot,” which may depend on the type of music and the type of task.

A.It just depends on what sort of work you’re doing.

B.However, difficult tasks already demand a lot of our resources.

C.However, participants who listened to complex music performed best on the easy task.

D.Our research findings suggest that the effects of music may also depend on our personalities.

E.We can become bored and our minds may wander when these resources are underutilized.

F.It can actually be helpful to put on some music when you work on something easy and repetitive.

  • 24、My husband was killed on September 11, 2001; he worked in WTC, well above the impact floors. On his birthday in March, 2002, I went to the site that used to be the WTC. It wasn't cleaned up yet; in fact it was ugly as hell and smelled about the same, and access was still pretty chaotic. I got to the Century 21 department store across the street, and stood against the wall. I broke down.

A guy who was working across the street at the site which was still a full-on disaster area—saw me and came across. "Who did you lose?" he asked. "My husband," I said, through ugly tears, and I told the guy what firm my husband had worked for, and that it was his birthday.

They guy turned out to be a firefighter. He reached into his front pocket. "This is actually really rare. Not a lot of glass survived; it just vaporized." And he pressed it into my hand.

He sensed my doubt and said, "Maybe it is for nothing. But crying all the day could be for something?"

I still have it. It's not that the guy was giving up a valuable souvenir. It was that he was acknowledging my connection to that little piece of glass, and putting it where he thought it belonged—that, and he needed to give me something that in some small way I could hold onto and focus on, instead of the hurt. This was how he could do that in that one moment.

I was so bound up in my own head that I never even asked his name; he didn't ask mine either. If he's out there now, I want to tell him that the little piece of glass made me start to think that maybe there were things, little things, short moments, small pieces, that last no matter what.

I want to say to him: thanks for that.

【1】Why did she go to the site?

A.She decided to do some shopping.

B.She missed her husband very much.

C.She intended to meet the firefighter.

D.She meant to look at the ruined WTC.

【2】The firefighter gave her a piece of glass to ________.

    A.honor her husband

    B.lift her spirits

    C.persuade her to leave

    D.remove her doubt

【3】What was her attitude to the firefighter?

    A.Appreciative.

    B.Doubtful.

    C.Disapproving.

    D.Reserved.
