John Wood who started the Room to Read campaign (运动),has opened1650 schools and 15000 libraries in some of the world's poorest communities(社区).He said that from the beginning,Room to Read's goal was to reach 10 million children around the world in the poorest countries.
In 1998,on a three-week vacation journey in Nepal,Wood met a local headmaster who invited him to visit his school in a far mountain village. The experience changed Wood's life.
"This headmaster had 450 students at the school, but he didn't have any books," Wood said."He had a library that was empty."
Wood promised to fill the library shelves and returned to the village one year later with some of his friends with 3000 books. And that was just the start.Later,Wood used some of his personal money to start Room to Read. He believes that world change begins with educated children.Today, the programme can be found in10 countries across Asia and Africa.

Room to Read's biggest challenge is the huge need. “People are afraid to spend now,” said Linda Morrow, who owns a shoe and handbag store.“They don’t know what the future will bring.”
During the financial crisis (金融危机), several of the country’s biggest banks have been forced to sell or close. This has made lots of Americans afraid to buy expensive goods.

The crisis began last year.Experts think it was because US banks lend money too easily.Last year a lot of people and companies, who borrowed money, have found themselves unable to pay it back. This left the banks, as well as the people who put their money in the banks, without money.Since the banks borrowed money between themselves and even across borders (国界), the whole world was in trouble.

Dear Mr. White, I’m fat and I have to take exercise to keep fit. However, I can’t manage myself well at all. My friends say I am just a “lazy cancer patient”. Every time I remind myself that I should exercise more, I find some excuses, such as the bad weather and having too much homework. What should I do? Yours sincerely, Cindy |
Dear Cindy, You’re not alone on the way. I have the same problem as you do. Here are my suggestions. Find fun ways to exercise. It’s easy for you to keep on while you are doing something you enjoy. My brother goes cycling almost every week. He doesn’t think it is a kind of exercise but a hobby. Interest is important. Second, I suggest you ask one of your friends to take exercise together. To be honest, I’m a little lazy. So I choose to exercise with my cousin. Encouragement from my cousin always cheers me up and makes me continue. It works well. How about sending some hot photos of exercising onto your WeChat Moments (微信朋友圈)? Others may give you a like. When you get others’ praise, you will be full of energy and glad to go on. Hope these suggestions are really helpful to you. I’m looking forward to seeing a healthier “you” in the P. E. classes next term. Yours, Mr. White |

27、From Star Wars to Interstellar, I have always loved science fiction. My favorite class in university was astronomy (天文学). I was introduced to Chinese sci-fi through The Three-Body Problem after I moved to China in 2015. An old bookworm friend of mine told me about Liu Cixin’s famous trilogy (三部曲).
The Three Body Problem begins with the “cultural revolution” (1966-76) in the background. The key event of the story is when an alien civilization (文明) receives a signal (信号) from Earth. The Trisolarans (“三体人”) make immediate plans to invade (侵略) our planet. However, humans have 450 years to prepare. In that time, they form different groups. Some want to embrace the invading aliens while others want to fight them. The book goes back and forth between past and present, covering many themes—politics, psychology (心理学), physics and environmentalism.
I enjoyed the realism of the story. I think Liu is right in that aliens would likely come to our planet for environmental reasons. He’s also correct about humans being divided. After all, I think humans are irrational (不理性的). Liu also uses real science. String Theory (弦理论) is the modern idea about how our universe works. It features heavily in this story.
China has a rich history of scientific knowledge and certainly is no stranger to sci-fi. Lunar Colony was one of the first Chinese sci-fi stories ever written. It was published in 1904. The Chinese writer, known by the pen name Huangjiang Diaosou, wrote the serial in the magazine Xiuxiang Xiaoshuo. As a foreign lover of sci-fi, I find this interesting because some countries have only more recently started writing sci-fi. In spite of cultural, historic and political differences between East and West, China has made a massive contribution (巨大的贡献) to sci-fi.
【1】How does the writer first know the book The Three Body Problem?
A.He learned about it from his favorite class in university.
B.A friend introduced it to him.

【2】Which of the following statements is NOT true?

B.String Theory is made up by Liu Cixin to show how the universe works.
C.The Three Body Problem is not only about the science and the future.
【3】What does the underlined word in the second paragraph “embrace” mean?
A.To fight back with full strength.
B.To accept somebody happily.
C.To help someone achieve their dreams.
【4】What can we know about the book The Three Body Problem from the passage?
A.The story happens in the future world.
B.Humans fight with the Trisolarans in the book.
C.It may be for environmental reasons that the Trisolarans choose to come to earth.
【5】What does the writer think of Chinese sci-fi?
A.China has a rich history of scientific knowledge but is not good at writing fictions.
B.Chinese sci-fi is more interesting than western ones.
C.Chinese sci-fi plays an important role in the world of science fictions.
