You may have heard the saying “The Yangtze River is China’s mother river.” The main route of the Yangtze is almost 6,400 km long. As the world’s third-longest river, its valley(流域)covers one-fifth of China’s land area. The Yangtze River Economic Zone covers 11 provinces and cities, making up about 40 percent of China’s total population and GDP.
On Dec 26, China’s top legislature(立法机关)passed the Yangtze River Protection Law, which will work on March 1, 2021. It is the first law to protect a waterway in China, CGTN noted.
The “mother river” is in great need of protection because something is wrong with it. For example, the river’s Chinese paddlefish(白鲟)has died out after surviving for 150 million years because of overfishing and water pollution. There’re also desertified(荒漠化的) land and soil pollution near the upstream part of the river in Qinghai province, Xinhua reported.
The Yangtze River Protection Law includes bans(禁止)on activities that could have terrible influence on the river. It also includes heavier punishments for those who don’t follow the law.
According to the law, fishing will be banned in all of the Yangtze’s natural waterways, including its major tributaries(支流)and lakes. Those who are caught fishing will be fined 50,000 to 500,000 yuan.
Sand mining(采沙)will be strictly limited in the river valley. Many companies are mining sand along the river, as sand is a rare resource. However, this has led to lower water levels on the river, which has caused the river’s water quality to become worse.
Companies operating along the river will turn to green development. Companies that produce dangerous chemicals will move out, the law says.
【1】What does the first paragraph tell us about the Yangtze River?
A.How old it is.

C.What problems it has.
D.What its environment is like.
【2】The following are the reasons that the “mother river” is in great need of protection, except________.

B.because it’s the third longest river in the world
C.because of the water pollution
D.because of the soil pollution near its upstream
【3】What can we know from the passage?
A.People can’t fish in the river’s major lakes.
B.Sand mining will not be allowed in the river valley.
C.Companies along the river will be moved to other places.
D.Anyone who causes pollution will be fined at least 50,000 yuan.

26、Success does not belong to a select group of individuals (个人). Success belongs to those who are willing to go after it and try their best to do what they have to do. Here are some useful practical ways for you if you want to be a success.
Desire. Desire is the strong wish to achieve a goal. Without desire you have nothing. Before you can run with desire, your goal must be plain, clear, and it must also be exciting.
Show up. Seventy percent of success in life is showing up. You can’t have a best seller, if you have never written a book. You can’t get your dream job, if you’re afraid to turn in an application. Showing up doesn’t guarantee(保证) success, but if you don’t show up, you won’t succeed.
Fail. Unless you’re willing to have a try, fail unhappily, and have another try, success won’t happen. To have success you have to do things the right way, but often the only way to do something right is to first fail at it. As Thomas J. Watson said, a simple formula (公式) for success is to double your rate of failure (失败). So welcome failure, become a student of failure, learn from failure, and soon you will succeed.
Work Harder. Everyone runs, but everyone is not willing to run for an hour every day. Success is not about doing what the common person can’t do. It’s about doing what the common person is unwilling to do. And on a deeper level, it’s about creating habits that the common person is unwilling to create. It’s the habit of doing things with excellence that causes success.
Enjoy the Journey. Success is a journey, not a destination (终点). Success is not a certain car or a certain house or a certain happy marriage. Success is the enjoyment of the journey. You have to enjoy the journey.
Someone once said, “Unless you change how you are, you will always have what you’ve got.” You have to change, you will change, and you will succeed.
【1】Who does success belong to?

B. the common person who works hard

【2】Which of the following is NOT mentioned in achieving success?
A. Working hard. B. Good education.

A. It’s not easy for people to develop their health.

C. Keeping working harder is necessary when you go after success.
D. Most people don’t want to spend too much time running.
【4】Which of the following is TRUE about success according to the passage?
A. If you want to succeed, you should have special talents.

27、Believe it or not, one-sixth of the world’s population depends on the snow that melts on mountains for its fresh water. That is more than one billion people! But we don’t know how much water is actually locked up in the world’s snowy mountains. In the past we have just guessed.
A NASA-led experiment called SnowEx is trying to find a real answer by using sensors (感应器) to monitor snow from satellites. Last month, five SnowEX aircrafts took 10 sensors and scanned (扫描) mountains in western Colorado, US.
The key to working out how much water will pour out of mountain snow is a measurement called snow water equivalent (SWE,雪水当量). The global average is 30 percent of snow depth, Ed Kim, SnowEx’s lead scientist said. In other words, 25 cm of snow melts down to 8 cm of water.
But the mountain snow can be very different, making measurement difficult. There is shallow (浅的) and deep snow. Sometimes snow hides under thick forests. Sometimes snow melts and water will flow through it. No single sensor can deal with all the conditions.
That’s why SnowEx is using a combination (组合) of sensors. Each sensor has its strength. Some can see through clouds and darkness. Some see through forests. Some are especially for shallow or deep snow. Together, they will collect data of the snow’s depth, density (密度) and temperature.
Scientists will then use a computer to read the data and find a better SWE measurement. “We’ve never before had the opportunity to combine these specific sensors in one experiment,” said Dorothy Hall, a SnowEx scientist. The experiment is very important for understanding and managing the world’s fresh water resources.
【1】What is SnowEx trying to do?

Her school gave these twigs to the students to plant. _______ of them looked very strong, but with hope for the future, I planted them in our _______. Over the years, because of an accident with the lawnmower (割草机) and poor soil (土壤), three of them died. Only one continued to grow.
It grew very _______ and wasn't very straight. It never got very tall. In the end, it looked more like a fat bush (灌木) than a tree. A few years ago, I noticed that it was starting to die. The lower leaves were falling day by day. Only the leaves at the top of the tree were still _______. Last summer I did my best to _______ it by feeding it a lot of needs (肥料), but it didn't work.
Later one morning, I went to the backyard and looked at it again. I was wondering how the "tree" would be and whether there was a need to just cut it down. It was a robin (知更鸟) patiently building a nest (巢) in the topmost tree. I smiled when I looked at it. I thought maybe this old tree was still _______. It might not be healthy or pretty, but it was still giving a bird a _______.
