四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、I want a new smartphone. Like many old phones, my phone is slowing down and its battery life is getting short. But I’m having difficulty pulling the trigger(做决定). It’s not because I don’t have time to choose a phone. It’s not about the cost either. It’s the environment. The influence of a new phone on the environment is about the same as using the old one for ten years.

Making smartphones, computers and other tech products produces a lot of greenhouse gases. Also, it takes noble metals(贵金属)and rare earth metals(稀土金属). If you’re reading this on your smart phone now, you’re holding about 0.034 grams of gold, 0.34 grams of silver, and smaller amounts of palladium, platinum, yttrium and terbium. These are tiny amounts, but we have to consider the need for smartphones around the world. In the first quarter of 2022, for example, the Apple Inc. produced about 60 million iPhones.

All of these metals have to be mined(开采)from inside the earth. Mining is harmful to the environment. Forests are cut down, the ground is dug deep, and water quality in the area drops greatly. In the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), mining has caused a big fall in the population of Grauer’s Gorillas(东非低地大猩猩). Worse still, the mining industry of the DRC depends on child labor.

It’s almost impossible to live in the 21st century without harming the environment. I am guilty(内疚的)as well—I eat a lot of meat and fly a lot. But that doesn’t mean we should pay no attention to the results of our actions and stop trying to do something for our planet. I strongly advise you to think carefully about buying a new smartphone, no matter what advertisements try to tell you.

【1】In the first quarter of 2022, about _________ was used to make iPhones.

    A.2,040 kilos of silver

    B.2,040 kilos of gold

    C.204,000 kilos of silver

    D.20,400 kilos of gold

【2】What’s the third paragraph mainly about?

    A.Disadvantages of mining for metals.

B.Bad influences of mining on the DRC.

C.Air and water pollution caused by mining.

D.Harmful influences of mining on animals.

【3】Which is TRUE about the writer’s opinion?

A.People should eat a lot of meat.

B.People had better change a phone every two years.

C.People should take the plane as often as possible.

D.Buying a new phone is harmful to the environment.

【4】What’s the purpose of the passage?

A.To encourage people to care about technology.

B.To show how smartphone production gets into trouble.

C.To introduce noble metals and rare earth metals in smartphones.

D.To ask people to think twice about changing smartphones.

【5】Where is the passage taken from?

    A.A science website.

    B.A detective story.

    C.A leaflet on phones.

    D.A chemistry magazine.

  • 25、   One day after school, I went to the teacher's office to see my teacher, but nobody was there. As I was about to leave, I noticed a piece of paper on the floor. I picked it up and saw the words "FINAL-TERM EXAMINATION " at the top. I put the paper into my school bag secretly and ran out of the room.

After I came back home, I took out the paper quickly. It was the exam paper of my worst subject, History. I felt excited. My heart beat fast. I took out my History book and started working on the answer. I had never answered any questions so seriously.

On the day of the History exam, I went into the exam hall confidently. When the paper was sent to me, I dreamed of getting the highest mark in the whole grade and could not help smiling. "My History teacher always encouraged me to work hard and get better grades, but I let him down time and time again. This time I will give him a big surprise," I thought.

When the teacher said we could start, I turned the paper over. To my surprise, all the questions were different. Later I felt nervous. In the end, I almost left the paper undone. After the exam. I ran to the toilet, took out the paper and carefully read it from the top. Oh! It was last year's exam paper. I read all the questions but I hadn't read the date.

This is a lesson in which I know I have to put my feet on the ground. I regretted doing such a silly thing. After that, I told my teacher the truth and I promised to be honest. From then on, I worked harder than ever before.

  • 27、If you’ve decided to read more, you’re not alone. However, one of the challenges with books is making time to read them all. In a classic guide How to Read a Book, Mortimer J. Adler and Charles Van Doren provide a solution; Don’t try to read all of them, because most of them aren’t worth it. You can get the best ideas from most books simply by skimming them. Skimming also prepares you to learn more when you actually read the book.

There are two levels of Adler and Van Doren‘’s method of skimming. One includes looking through contents (目录) and conclusions of each chapter and making notes of what you already know or whether this book has information you want to learn. The second is known as speed reading, which is basically reading through a book really fast, just to get a surface-level understanding of it.

In order to get knowledge quickly, people try their best to study and take use of skills, but the obsession with reading faster and learning more is not completely right. Reading two books doesn’t make a person twice as learned as a person who reads one book twice(or even once, carefully).

Here’s how you can really use skimming to your advantage.

Don’t feel bad for skimming instead of reading. If the book was any good, it's likely to realize how important it is for you to read the whole thing when you skim the book.

When you read for inspiration that you can use to your work, you need to read documents (文件) for your work, or to improve your skills. Then there’s no doubt that skimming will be quite useful.

When you do find a book you like, don’t try to rush through it to the end. Slow down and take notes. Reread certain parts you don’t understand in detail. Connect the book’s ideas with other ideas or experiences you have.

Skimming is simply a tool to support the overall reading experience. It helps you choose the right thing to read. Learning is not about how many books you read, or even how fast you read. It’s about what you get from each of those books.

【1】What can we know from Mortimer J. Adler and Charles Van Doren?

A.Readers need to connect the book’s ideas with theirs.

B.It’s impossible to read all the books for most readers.

C.Skimming helps us to learn more when actually reading.

D.We can get the best ideas from books simply by skimming.

【2】What does the underlined word “obsession” probably mean?

A.The idea which is wrong or untrue.

B.The state of being crazy about something.

C.The method that people use to solve problems.

D.The act of disagreeing with something strongly.

【3】According to the passage, readers will ________ by skimming.

    A.have the best reading experience

B.reread a book as fast as possible

C.feel regretful for reading part of the book

D.judge whether they need to read the whole book

【4】What is the passage mainly about?

A.The opinions on skimming from different people.

B.The importance of reading books fast by skimming.

C.The methods of reading uninteresting books by skimming.

D.The suggestions of reading books effectively by skimming.
