In 1987, a small company named Huawei was started in Shenzhen. After more than 30 years of development, the company has now beaten Apple and become the world’s second-largest maker of smart phones behind Korea’s Samsung. It has also become the world’s largest supplier (供应商) of 5G.

But recently, Huawei faced some difficulties. The U.S. government ordered a ban (禁令) on its sales in America. American officials said Huawei gave information (that it collected) to the Chinese government. At the same time, the U.S. government planned to stop selling parts and services to Huawei, which was believed that Huawei’s business would be hurt.

“We have never received such a request from the Chinese government and we have never tried to get into other systems (系统) to collect information.” Ren Zhengfei, Huawei’s founder and president said. “The ban from the U.S. would have little effect on our company. Huawei has enough ability to deal with the problems.” Ren added.

In an interview several years ago, Ren Zhengfei said, “I started Huawei with only £4,000 at the beginning, but now it has become a $100 billion company. The experience was not as romantic (浪漫的) as you imagine.

Facing the ban of the U.S., Huawei is growing. Huawei’s smart phone sales around the world rose 50 percent compared to a year earlier in the first three months of 2019. At the same time, sales from both Samsung and Apple fell. So far, Huawei has grown into the world’s largest telecommunications equipment (电信设备) supplier, selling in 170 countries! • 25、During the last week of my sophomore year(大学二年级), Mom called me, hoping my summer break would be spent with grandma and grandpa. My grandparents were both in their seventies, and I knew they really needed the help around the farm.

So I packed my car after the final exam and started my life on the farm. As weeks passed, I gradually settled into a routine of daily work with Grandpa. In the evenings I usually read or talked with Grandma.

On the last Saturday in June, I went fishing with my grandfather. Unexpectedly, we saw one of the swans was dead by the pond. Grandpa had given the pair of swans to Grandma on their fiftieth anniversary. "Why don't we buy another one?" I suggested. Grandpa thought for a few moments and finally said, "no... it's not that easy, Bruce. You see, swans mate for life. There's nothing we can do for the one that's left. He has to work it out for himself." A few days later, we drove by the pond and found the other swan lying near the same place we had found the first one. It, too, was dead.

Then July 12 came. Grandma died suddenly that morning of a stroke( 中 风 ). My grandfather was obviously shaken when he heard the news.

The funeral was held the next day. On the second day after the funeral, Grandpa asked  all the people to get back to their own lives. Grandpa was not a man who could outwardly express his grief around others, and we all worried about him.During the rest of the summer, we stayed busy working. I thought there was something different about Grandpa but couldn't tell exactly what it was.

September was nearing, I had to leave. As I drove down the driveway, he waved to me and then walked to the gate to start the morning livestock check. That's how I like to remember him.

Mom called me at school on a windy October day to tell me Grandpa had died. He died of a stroke, the same as Grandma.

    1The writer’s grandpa is a person who .

    A. didn’t like to live in the past   B. didn’t like to express love or sadness

    C. didn’t want to care about others   D. didn’t want to stay alone on his farm

2What can we know about swans according to Paragraph 3?

    A. Every swan has only one mate in its life.

    B. A swan will find another one if its mate dies.

    C. Swans are not animals that can live long.

    D. All swans die at the same place by the pond.

3What do you think is the most probable reason for Grandpa’s death?

    A. He was sad about the swans’ death.

    B. He has been badly ill for a long time.

    C. He felt very lonely as all his family members left after the funeral.

    D. He missed his wife and couldn’t get through the times after her death.

4Which is the best title of the passage?

    A. My grandparents’ farm   B. My holiday life on a farm

    C. A love story of the swans   D. A love story of my grandparents

  • 26、A popular saying goes, “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” However, that’s not really true. Words have the power to cheer us up or let us down. It doesn’t matter if the words come from someone else or ourselves the positive and negative (正面和负面) influences are just as lasting.

We all talk to ourselves sometimes. We’re usually too shy to admit(承认) it, though. In fact, we really shouldn’t be because more and more scientists believe talking to ourselves out loud is a healthy habit.

This “self-talk” helps us make ourselves active, remember things, solve problems, and calm ourselves down. It is said that as much as 77% of self-talk is likely to be negative. So in order to stay positive, we should only speak words of encouragement to ourselves. We should also be quick to give ourselves a pat on the back. The next time you finish a project, do well in a test, or finally clean your room, join me in saying “Good job!”

Often, words come out of our mouths without us thinking about the influence they will have. But we should realize that our words cause certain influence in others. For example, when returning an item to a store, we might use warm, friendly language during the exchange. And the salesperson will probably answer in a similar manner. Otherwise you may get into trouble.

Words have power because of their lasting influences. Many of us feel sorry for something we once said. And we remember unkind words said to us! Before speaking, we should always ask ourselves: Is it true? Is it loving? Is it needed? If what we want to say doesn’t pass this test, then it’s better left unsaid.

Words have power: both positive and negative. Those around us receive encouragement when we speak positively. We can offer hope, build self-confidence and encourage others to do their best. Negative words destroy all those things. Will we use our words to hurt or to cure? The choice is ours.

【1】 There is no need for us to feel shy when we talk to ourselves because ________.

    A. almost everybody has the habit of talking to themselves

    B. talking to ourselves always gives us courage

    C. we may gain quite a few advantages of talking to ourselves

    D. it does no harm to have “self-talk” when we are alone

【2】 The underlined part in the third paragraph means that we should also ________ in time.

    A. remind ourselves

    B. praise ourselves

    C. make ourselves relaxed

    D. give ourselves fun

【3】The writer would probably hold the view that ________.

    A. it is better to think twice before talking to others

    B. negative words may encourage us to make more progress

    C. people prefer to remember friendly words

    D. encouraging words are sure to lead to kind offers

【4】In which column(版面) of the newspaper can you most likely read this passage?

    A. News. B. Nature. C. Health. D. Culture.
