  • 25、Have you ever heard someone use the phrase “once in a blue moon”? People use this expression to describe something that they do not do very often. For example, someone might say that he tries to avoid(避免) eating sweets because they are unhealthy, but will eat chocolate” once in a blue moon”. Or someone who does not usually like to go to the beach might say “I visit the shore once in a blue moon.”While many people use this phrase, not everyone knows the meaning behind it.

The first thing to know is that the moon itself is never really blue. This is just an expression. In fact, the phrase” blue moon” has to do with the shape of the moon, not the color.

As the moon travels around the earth, it appears to change shape. We associate(联系) certain names with certain shapes of the moon. For example, when we can see a small part of the moon it is called a crescent moon. A crescent is a shape that looks like the tip(尖端) of a fingernail (手指甲)when we cannot see the moon at all,  it is called a new moon. When we can see the whole moon, it is called a full moon. Usually, there is only one full moon every month. Sometimes, however there will be two full moons in one month. When this happens, the second full moon is called a blue moon”.

Over the next 20 years, there will only be 15 blue moons. As you can see, a blue moon is a very rare (稀有的)event. This fact has led people to use the expression” once in a blue moon” to describe other very rare events in their lives.

【1】Which of the following would be a good example of using the phrase” once in a blue moon”?

A.Simon often tells jokes. Simon tells jokes once in a blue moon.

B.Tom hardly remembers to do exercise. Tom does exercise once in a blue moon.

C.Mary likes to go shopping every weekend. Mary goes shopping once in a blue moon.

D.Cindy hates to do housework, but she does housework every day. Cindy does housework once in a blue moon.

【2】When does a blue moon happen in nature?  ________________

A.When the moon has a blue moon.

B.When we cannot see the moon at all.

C.When there are two full moons in one month.

D.When we can only see a small part of the color.

【3】 How often will a blue moon happen over the next twenty years?__________

    A.Once a year.

    B.Less than once a year.

    C.More than once a year.

    D.At least twice a year.

【4】What does the underlined part This fact” in the last paragraph refer to?___________

A.A blue moon is a very rare event.

B.The moon appears to change shape.

C.The moon itself is never really blue.

D.A blue moon has to do with the shape of the moon.

  • 26、   You have seen them in movies and television, but a man called Runar Stanley Sighvatsson in Iceland found a real Viking sword(维京人的剑). The sword could be 1,000 years old.

Swords were the main weapons ( 武器)of the Vikings, who sailed wooden ships from Scandinavia. They invaded (侵略)cities and traded goods during the late 8th to late 11th centuries. Scandinavia is a group of countries in Europe that includes Sweden, Norway, Iceland, Denmark, Greenland and Finland.

  • 27、   “Life is speeding up. Everyone is getting unwell.”

This may sound like something someone would say today. But in fact, an unknown person who lived in Rome in 53 AD wrote it.

We all love new inventions. They are exciting, amazing and can even change our lives. But have all these developments really improved the quality of our lives?

Picture this. You’re rushing to finish your homework on the computer. Your mobile phone rings, a QQ message from your friend appears on the screen, the noise from the television is getting louder and louder. Suddenly the computer goes blank and you lose all your work. Now you have to stay up all night to get it done. How happy do you feel?

Inventions have speeded up our lives so much that they often leave up feeling stressed and tired. Why do you think people who live far away from noisy cities, who have no telephones, no cars, not even any electricity often seem to be happier? Perhaps because they live simpler lives.

One family in the UK went “back in time” to see what life was like without all the inventions we have today. The grandparents, with their daughter, and grandsons Benjamin, 10 and Thomas, 7, spent nine weeks in a 1940s house. They had no washing machine, microwave, computer or mobile phones.

The grandmother, Lyn, said, “The more things you have, the more difficult life becomes.” The boys said they fought less. Probably, they said, because there was less to fight over, such as their computer. Benjamin also noticed that his grandmother had changed from being a fashionable, beer-drinking granny, to one who cooked things.

【1】In the passage, the writer describes a picture to show that new inventions ________ .

    A.have speeded up our lives

B.have improve the quality of our lives

C.may make people feel very happy

    D.may bring people some trouble

【2】According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true?

A.People who live far away from noisy cities often seem to be happier.

B.The family had some changes when they lived in a 1940s house.

C.An unknown Roman was sure that the quality of life would get better.

D.With the improvement of our lives, we often feel stressed and tired.

    【3】The passage is mainly about ________ .

    A.problems with technology

    B.the importance of technology

    C.changes happening to technology

D.improvements of our lives with technology
