四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、Have you wondered how your pets are feeling? When your dog wags (来回摇摆) its tail, does that mean it is happy? A new app called Happy Pets can tell you what’s going on.

The app uses artificial intelligence (AI) to analyze (分析) the facial expressions of cats and dogs. Then it can tell you what kind your pet is and how it is feeling. It can show the five most common feelings—happiness, anger, neutral (中性的) feelings, sadness and fear.

Researchers at the University of Melbourne in Australia developed the app. The key technology used in the app is facial recognition, a common use of AI. We can unlock our mobile phones or enter train stations with facial recognition readers. But this is the first time that the technology has been used for animals.

The app’s AI was first taught to recognize a picture of an animal. Then, it was taught to recognize the facial features (特征) of cats and dogs. Next came the most important step—teaching it to detect (察觉) emotions (情感) according to certain facial features. For example, if a dog closes its eyes and mouth while changing the position of its ears, this means the dog is scared. To master this skill, the AI program “saw” and “read” thousands of example images.

Are the results correct? The researchers think they are believable since the app has been tested many times. Interestingly, they have found that cats are harder to read than dogs. In the future, the app might also be able to analyze a pet’s body to make its readings more correct.

【1】What is the app Happy Pets used for?

    A.Playing games with pets.

    B.Training pets to remember faces.

    C.Telling us how pets feel.

A.It is part of a student project.

    B.It uses facial recognition technology.

A.To show how to recognize animal’s feelings.

B.To show how to care for animals.

    C.To describe a new app.

Have you ever heard of "a ball of energy"? People often use it to describe very active children. But today we tell about an invention called the soccket, that is a real soccer ball of energy. Julia Silverman explains that in fact the soccket is a portable generator (便携式发电机).

Julin Silverman and Jessica Matthews developed the soccket as part of a group project for an engineering class at Harvard University.

There are mechanisms (装置) in a soccket. When you kick, hit or throw it, energy is then kept in it by these mechanisms instead of disappearing into the environment.

Then the user can put something directly into the ball, like a lamp, or a mobile phone charger (充电器)  so that they can get energy from it.

For every fifteen minutes of the game play, the soccket can provide enough electricity() for an LED lamp for three hours, and the ball can store(储藏) up to 24 hours' electricity.

The International Energy Association reported last year that nearly one and a half billion people in the world had no electricity to use, and most of them live in Africa, India and other countries in Asia.

Julia Silverman and Jessica Matthews both had experiences in developing countries before they began the project. They knew that power shortages are a serious problem in really areas.

There's an energy crisis in the world. One out of every five people in the world don't have any electricity. And besides that, there are a lot of health problems because what people use instead of the electricity are harmful choices like kerosene(煤油) lamps, which produce a lot of smoke.

Julia Silverman says the soccket ball is one small solution to a big problem.

Jessica Matthews and Julia Silverman hope their soccket ball will shine more light on the problem of power shortages. It offers people a chance to put their energy into the world's most popular sport and get some energy in return.

  • 26、If you feel sad or upset, remember not to watch a happy movie. A sad movie may be more suitable for you. Some scientists at Ohio State University have found that sad movies can make people happier.

Scientists asked 361 college students to watch a sad movie called Aronement. The movie tells a story of two lovers who were separated (分开). They died during World War II at the end of the movie. The 361 college students answered questions from the scientists before, after and three times during the movie to find out their different feelings, including sadness.

According to the result, scientists found out that people felt better after watching the sad movie. Scientists believed this was because the movie made them think about their own lives and relationships. Compared to those of the unlucky lovers in the movie, their lives were full of hope.

“I want to live my life to the fullest, and this movie has made me think a lot,” one student wrote.

Silvia Knobloch-Westerwick, the leader of the study, explained that bad moods would make people more thoughtful. “Good moods are generally a sign that everything is fine. You don’t have to worry, and you don’t have to think about problems in your life,” she said. “But bad emotions, like sadness, make you feel terrible about your situation. Therefore, seeing a sad movie will cause you to think more about your own close relationships and value them more.”

    B.luck

    C.news

    D.feelings

    B.Feeling Lonely? Find True Love

C.Feeling Bad? See a Happy Film

    D.Feeling Down? Think About Others
