24、Martin Strel is a long-distance swimmer, best known for swimming the world’s big rivers. He was born in Slovenia in 1954. He taught himself to swim when he was six and became a professional (职业的) swimmer in 1978. Martin holds Guinness World Records for swimming the Danube River, the Mississippi River, the Yanetze River and the Amazon River.
Of all his achievements, the greatest is his Amazon River swim. The Amazon is known as the largest and most dangerous river in the world. Several swimmers had tried to swim it, but all failed, Martin decided to risk his life and make history. He wanted to show the world that people could achieve their dreams and goals with hard work and perseverance (毅力). On April 7th, 2007, Martin Strel completed his Amazon River all the way from Atalaya (Peru) to the Atlantic Ocean at Belem (Brazil). He struggled (奋战) with the river for 66 days and swam 3,274 miles in total. He became a worldwide hero.
Many people still cannot believe what he has done so far, so that is why they sometimes describe him as “Fishman”, “Human Fish” or even “the Craziest Man in the World”.
In 2009, American filmmakers produced a documentary (纪录片) called Big River Man. And the book, The Man Who Swan the Amazon, has been sold in many countries. It tells us an inspirational story of perseverance and hard work, which has encouraged many people.

25、Fish have ears. Really. They're quite small and have no opening to the outside world carrying sound through the body. For the past seven years, Simon Thorrold, a university professor, has been examining fish ears, small round ear bones called otoliths.
As fish grow, so do their otoliths. Each day, their otoliths gain a ring of calcium carbonate(碳酸钙).By looking through a microscope and counting these rings, Thorrold can determine the exact age of a young fish. As a fish gets older, its otoliths no longer get daily rings. Instead, they get yearly rings, which can also be counted, giving information about the fish's age, just like the growth rings of a tree.
Ring counting is nothing new to fish scientists. But Thorrold has turned to a new direction. They're examining the chemical elements of each otolith ring.
The daily ring gives us the time, but chemistry tells us about the environment in which the fish swam on any given day. These elements tell us about the chemistry of the water that the fish was in. It also says something about water temperature, which determines how much of these elements will gather within each otolith ring.
Thorrold can tell, for example, if a fish spent time in the open ocean before entering the less salty water of coastal areas. He can basically tell where fish are spending their time at any given stage of history.
In the case of the Atlantic croaker, a popular saltwater food fish, Thorrold and his assistant have successfully followed the travelling of young fish from mid-ocean to the coast, a journey of many hundreds of miles.
This is important to managers in the fish industry, who know nearly nothing about the whereabouts of the young fish for most food fish in the ocean. Eager to learn about his technology, fish scientists are now lending Thorrold their ears.
【1】What can we learn about fish ears from the text?
A. They are small soft rings.
B. They are openings only on food fish.
C. They are not seen from the outside.
D. They are not used to receive sound.
【2】Why does the writer compare the fish to trees?
A. Trees gain a growth ring each day.
B. Trees also have otoliths.
C. Their growth rings are very small.
D. They both have growth rings.
【3】The Atlantic croaker is ___________.
A. a fish research B. a fishing company
C. an ocean area D. a fish
【4】Why is it important to study the chemistry of otolith rings?
A. The elements of the otoliths can tell the history of the sea.
B. Chemical contents of otoliths can tell how fast fish can swim.
C. We can know more about fish and their living environment.
D. Scientists can know exactly how old a fish is.
【5】How would you understand “fish scientists are now lending Thorrold their ears”?
A. They are very interested in Thorrold's research findings.
B. They want to know where they can find fish.
C. They lend their fish for chemical studies.
D. They wonder if Thorrold can find growth rings from their ears.
26、This year marks the 20th anniversary (周年纪念) of China’s first manned space task, with Yang Liwei becoming the first Chinese astronaut to go to space. Since then, another 17 astronauts have reached for the stars. The choice of the fourth generation (代) of astronauts began in 2022 and is now in full swing. Experts showed how difficult the training is before astronauts can rise to space.
“To make sure that Chinese astronauts accomplish their tasks and return to Earth safely, eight kinds, including over 200 subjects of training, were set,” Huang Weifen, leading designer of the astronaut system for China’s manned space project, told CCTV News. Apart from physical fitness training, it also includes basic scientific knowledge, health, and so on.
Among the training subjects, the most tiring one is underwater training. This training is designed for astronauts to get used to the microgravity (微重力) environment in space. According to Huang, astronauts stay underwater in suits weighing over 100 kilograms for six hours at a time. Water resistance (阻力) and the heavy suit make every move tiring. “Nie Haisheng once reported he lost two kilos after one under-water training exercise,” said Huang. Each astronaut receives training for at least three and a half years before having the chance to go to space.
Chinese astronauts also require language and cultural training to have better communication with their international partners. Their strong mind and hard work have made China a great player in the space race, and they continue to encourage future generations to reach for the stars.
【1】Which word is close to the underlined word “accomplish”?
A.Finish.
B.Know.
C.Accept.
D.Receive.
【2】How does the writer show the hard work of underwater training?
A.By listing numbers and telling a story.
B.By listing a fact and giving an example.
C.By answering a question and listing a fact.
D.By giving an example and comparing with others.
【3】Why do Chinese astronauts need language and cultural training?
A.To make their life in space more interesting.
B.To communicate with foreign astronauts better.
C.To inspire future generations to study for the stars.
D.To keep them not stop learning even in the space.
【4】What is the text mainly about?
A.The Chinese astronauts’ hard training.
B.The great achievements of Chinese space field.
C.The rapid development of Chinese space field.
D.The future training plans of Chinese astronauts.
27、 One day a lady who was riding in a coach saw a boy on the road without wearing any shoes and was seemingly very painful. She asked the coachman to take him up,and said she would pay for him.
When the coach reached the end of its journey, the kind lady found that the poor boy was going to the nearest sea port, trying to find a job as a sailor.
Twenty years afterwards,on the same road,a sea captain who was on a coach saw an old lady walking tiredly along, and he made the coachman pull up his horses. He put the old lady inside, saying,“I’ll pay for her.” Feeling thankful, the old lady said,“I am too poor to pay for a ride now.
You are such a kind man!”
The captain told her that he always felt sorry for those who had to walk as she had been doing;then he added,“I remember, twenty years ago, near this very place,I was a poor boy walking along the road, and a kind lady paid for me to ride.”
“Ah,” she said,“I am that lady! But things have changed with me since then.”
“Well,” said the captain,“I have made a fortune.I’m rich now and have come home to enjoy it. I will allow you twenty-five pounds a year as long as you live.” The old lady burst into tears, and gratefully accepted the sailor’s offer.
“Throw the bread upon the waters, and you will find it after many days.” Let me explain these words.
