  • 25、It was a beautiful late August morning. I sat on a bench across the street from the Beverly Public Library. With my notebook in hand, I began writing my love letter to the library.

We had dropped off our daughter, Natasha, at college yesterday. And our son, Rory, had graduated from college last May. They both do really well in their studies. They deserve most of the credit (称赞), but some of it must go to the Beverly Public Library.

When they were just babies, Rory and Natasha would crawl (爬行) around the Children’s Library in the Beverly Public Library. In the afternoons, they would go to Story Hour and make crafts in the craft room.

As days passed, we became very close to the librarians. We would even take part in their retirement farewell parties (退休欢送会). One of these was for our dear friend and children’s librarian, Nancy Bonne.

I remembered when Rory entered high school, he got a part-time job at the Children’s Library. His job was to check out books and prepare crafts. He worked with the same librarians who had once read to him during Story Hour. His experiences in the library not only helped him get into college, but also helped him pay for it.

I finished writing my love letter to the Beverly Public Library and placed my notebook back in my bag. When I stood up from the bench, a young mother and her child walked by. The child looked up to me and said, “I’m going to the library.”

    A.The same librarians.

【4】What can we know from the text?

  • 27、Ten years ago, I started to study luck. I wanted to know why some people are always in the right place at the right time, while others always experience ill luck. Many people volunteered for my research. Over the years I have interviewed them, watched their lives and had them take part in my experiments.

I did a simple experiment to discover why there were differences in their ability to find chances. I gave both lucky and unlucky people a newspaper and asked them to look through it and tell me how many photos were in it. I had secretly placed a large message halfway through the newspaper saying, “Tell the researcher you have seen this and win $50.” This message took up half of the page and was more than two inches (英尺) high. It was staring (盯着看) everyone straight in the face, but unlucky people tended to (倾向于) miss it and lucky people tended to find it.

Unlucky people are just more nervous than lucky people. They are busy looking only for what they need and this stops them from noticing the unexpected. As a result, they miss chances. Lucky people tend to be more relaxed and open. They can see everything that is in front of them, rather than just what they are looking for.

My research shows that lucky people live by several principles (原则). Here are some of these principles:

    * Listen to your gut instincts (直觉)—they are often right.

*Be open to new experiences and break your normal thought patterns.

*Spend a few moments each day remembering things that went well.

*See yourself being lucky before an important meeting or phone call.

【1】Why did the writer do this research?

A.To prove that luck is actually a matter of chance.

B.To study why some people are always lucky or unlucky.

C.To find out how much people care about money.

D.To help people become luckier through experiments.

【2】Which action would decide if the volunteer was lucky or unlucky?

A.Counting the number of photographs in the newspaper.

B.Correcting the exact height of the large message.

C.Finding a hidden message about winning $50 in the newspaper.

D.Finding human eyes staring at readers in the newspaper.

【3】Why do unlucky people often miss chances according to the research?

A.They pay great attention to what they need.

B.They are always busy looking for good luck.

C.They are relaxed and open about opportunities.

D.They care more about unexpected things.

【4】Which of the following won’t help you become a lucky person?

    A.Listening to your gut instincts.

    B.Thinking in a normal way.

    C.Remembering good things.

    D.Imagining yourself being lucky.

The Silk Road is a historically important international trade route(路线)between China and the Mediterranean(地中海). It began during the Western Han Dynasty and has been 1 bridge between East and West for over 2,000 years. The ancient road started from Chang’an(now Xi’an) and ended in East Europe, near 3 (today) Turkey and the Mediterranean Sea. It was about 6,500 kilometers long and covered one 4(four)of the planet.

The Silk Road got its name because Chinese silk used to be carried along this road. Silk, jade(翡翠), ceramics( 制陶术)and iron 5 (go) west to Rome. And from the west came glass, gems and food 6 carrots and sesame(芝麻).

The Silk Road was very important to both China and the rest of the world. It was 7 than an ancient international trade route. 六、完型填空 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 29、Maybe you have seen this in schools: Some students study nearly all the time but they just pass their exams, while some others may spend much1time on their books but do much better in exams. How could this happen? People used to think that hard work is the only way to success. But now they understand that smart work can make them successful, too.

Hard workers don’t2working for long hours, while smart workers always think of several different answers to these questions. “Why should I suffer this?” “Isn’t there a better way to do this?” Thanks to these people, we can use computers instead of the abacus now.3in every field is the direct result of “try to find a better way” by smart workers. There was a large soap factory in Japan. Once it received an unusual letter from someone who4that there was no soap in the soapbox he bought.

How could empty soapbox go out of the factory? The engineers checked the producing and packing. The producing was fine, but in about one in ten thousand cases, the packing machines let an empty soapbox go. There was no need to spend a lot of money repairing the machine for such a small problem. The engineer soon worked out a5. He put a large X-ray (X射线) machine and two large computers to find out the empty soapbox.6teaching the workers how to use it, he sat down in his seat, exhausted.

“Sir, we could have solved the problems in a much simpler and cheaper way.” a worker said.

“Really? How?” “We can put a huge fan near the packing machine. The wind coming from the fan will blow away the empty boxes and leave the other7with soap. There would be no need for an X-ray machine, two computers, and operating by workers.”

See, this is smart work. In order to succeed, we should not only learn from the engineers’ hard work, but also think smart like the workers.
