四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、   It’s hard to believe that a beautiful silk dress comes from thousands of small insects! Silk, one of the world’s greatest expensive things, is made by insects called silk worms(蚕宝宝). It takes about 5,500 silkworms to make 1 kilogram of silk. The process was discovered by the Chinese about 5.000 years ago.

How is silk made? The process starts with the eggs of a certain kind of insect. The eggs are collected and kept warm. After a few days, the silkworms come out of the eggs. They are fed with leaves from mulberry trees (桑叶) every 30 minutes, all night and all day. The room is kept warm, and the silkworms must not be influenced by loud noises or bad smells. After a month, they start to make a cocoon(). After four days, the cocoon is ready.

The cocoons are heated and the silkworms are killed inside them. Then the cocoons are put into water to make the silk loose(松散的)The silk from three or four cocoons is put together and made into a thread (线). One cocoon can make a thread 1 kilometer long!

Finally, the silk threads are made into cloth, and the cloth is used for things like dresses and scarves. Today, silk is produced in many countries, including India and Thailand, but more than 80 percent of the world's silk comes from China. Every year, enough silk thread is produced to go from the earth to the Sun 300 times. • 25、All of us may have experienced embarrassing moments. It could have been the time when you pronounced a simple word wrong in class, wore your T-shirt backwards, talked about someone else without realizing that they were right behind you, or secretly tried to take a picture of someone while the flash was on.

Though these embarrassing moments don’t harm us a lot, they come back from time to time and make us feel upset. Even if these moments may have faded after some time, we would always remember the feeling of strong embarrassment. In fact, these feelings may last for years. When these kinds of feelings return, they are known as a “cringe attack (羞愧综合症)”.

I personally get a quite uncomfortable feeling when I think back on a party my parents took me to when I was younger. I ate a bowl of strawberries by myself. My parents shouted at me – in front of everyone — for being so selfish. From then on, every time I put a strawberry into my mouth, my brain just throws that embarrassing scene back.

Why do these “cringe attacks” still pop up in our daily lives even though the actual events happened weeks, months, or even years ago? According to researchers, our brains give special attention to feelings that can be easily noticed. The stronger the feeling is, the stronger the memory will be. If you have a highly embarrassing or highly emotional (情绪激动的) moment, no matter what it is, your brain will try to catch it.

So how can we deal with this? Well, we can start by trying to be more objective (客观的) about our past selves. Consider that you are not alone in your embarrassment—everyone fails or makes silly, embarrassing mistakes. Instead of just trying to forget what we did, we should try to accept who we were at that moment and think about how we can change for the better.

  • 26、This story happened to Brantley Harrison and her family. Living in South Carolina, the Harrisons often look after sick, wounded(受伤的) or dying wild animals and send them back into the wild when they are feeling better. The Harrisons were not expecting to see them again.

In October, 2009, a wildlife rescue group found a 4-week-old dying squirrel and took her in and then placed her with Harrison and her family.

The Harrisons named the squirrel Bella. The little squirrel, with three other ones, all lived together outside of the Harrison’s home in an outdoor cage. They stayed in the Harrisons’ cage until spring.

In April, 2010, the Harrisons sent the squirrels back into the wild. The other squirrels soon got used to the wild life. But Bella didn’t. The squirrel wasn’t ready to leave her human family.

  • 27、Why play games? Because they are fun and a lot more besides. Following the rules planning your next move acting as a team member—these are all “game” ideas that you will have throughout your life.

Think about some of the games you played as a young child such as rope-jumping and hide-and-seek. Such games are entertaining and fun. But perhaps more importantly they translate life into exciting dramas (戏剧)that teach children some of the basic rules they will be expected to follow the rest of their lives such as taking turns and teamwork.

Many children’s games have a practical(实用的) side. Children around the world play games that prepare them for work they will do as adults. For example some Saudi Arabian children play a game called bones. It can be very helpful to exercise their hands and eyes which is needed in hunting.

Many sports encourage national or local pride. The most famous games of all the Olympic Games bring athletes (运动员)from around the world together to take part in the friendly competition. People who watch the event wave flags knowing that a gold medal is a win for a whole country not just the athlete who has got it. For countries experiencing natural disasters(灾难) or war an Olympic win can mean so much.

Sports are also an event that brings people together. Soccer is the most popular sport in the world. People on all continents play it—some for fun and some for a living. Nicolette Iribarne a Californian soccer player has discovered a way to spread hope through soccer. He set up an organization which can provide poor children with not only soccer balls but also a hopeful future.

六、完型填空 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 29、Choose the words or expressions and complete the passage(选择最恰当的单词或词语完成短文)

Three years ago, a group of researchers at Cornell University’s Food and Brand Lab had a guess. They knew that as part of the National School Lunch Program, apples were served to kids.

But many of them ________ in the rubbish bins, some even untouched. Unlike others, they wondered why the kids didn’t want the fruit.

They thought the fact that the apples were being served whole, rather than sliced (切成片的), made the fruit out of favor. And they wanted to ________ this idea.

They carried out a study at eight schools and found that fruit consumption(消耗) ________ by more than 60 percent when apples were served sliced. They then made a followup study at six other schools, which not only showed the same result, but further ________ it. Both the overall apple consumption and the percentage of students who ate more than half of the apple served to them were more than 70 percent higher at schools that served sliced apples.

Based on these results, it seems that even the simplest forms of inconvenience can influence us. Sliced apples did reduce the waste. However, the hardest part is getting kids to ________ eating fruit, and that’s exactly why sliced apples are the way to go. A child holding a whole apple has to break the skin, eat around the core (果核), and ________ the inconvenience of holding a large fruit. These problems might seem silly or unimportant, but they’re important when you’re missing teeth or have braces (牙箍), as so many kids do.

It’s one of those situations where what seems like a really small inconvenience actually makes a huge difference.
