四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、Each year, the famous Oxford Dictionaries chooses its Word of the Year. The word is carefully chosen depending on how popular it is and how well it explains the year. However, this year they didn’t actually choose a word at all. Instead, they chose a “face with tears(眼泪) of joy” emoji (表情符号).

This was the world’s most used emoji in 2015, according to research done by the Oxford University Press. It made up 20 percent of all emojis used in the UK and 17 percent of those used in the US.

Emojis started from Japan in the 1990s. Through the years, the simple, small pictures have changed the way people communicate online. According to New Yorker magazine, a survey in 2013 showed that 74 percent of people in the US and 82 percent in China had used emojis. About 6, 000,000,000 emoji pictures are flying around the world every day through messages. Although some worry that emojis will make people’s language skills weak, fans say they are fun and help them express their feelings more easily.

“Emojis are no longer just for sending messages to teenagers. Instead, they have become a kind of expression, which can cross language barriers (障碍),” Oxford Dictionaries said in a statement, explaining their uncommon choice. “Emoji culture has become so popular that emojis have their own way and stories.”

Some even think emojis can take the place of words. Fred Benenson, an American data (数据) engineer, translated American novel Moby Dick into Emoji Dick. The book has even been kept by the US Library of Congress (美国国会图书馆).

    D. Emojis has become the main ways to communicate online instead of words

【3】The novel Moby Dick is mentioned in the last paragraph to show ________.

  • 25、This was the first real task I received in my new school. It seemed simple: go on the Internet and find information about a man named George Washington. As I searched the name, I found that there were two famous people having the same name who looked completely different! One invented hundreds of uses for peanuts, while the other led some sort of army across America. I stared at the screen, wondering which one my teacher meant. I called my grandfather for a golden piece of advice; let the coin decide. I flipped(掷) a coin and Ah! Tails (背面)! My report would be about the great man who invented peanut butter, George Washington Carver.

Weeks later, I stood in front of the classroom and proudly read my homework. But things started to get strange. I looked around the room, only to find my classmates with big smiles on their faces and tears in their eyes and my stone-faced teacher. I was completely lost. “What could be causing everyone to act this way?”

Oh well, I dropped the paper and sat down at my desk, burning to find out what I had done wrong. As a classmate began his report, it all became clear, “My report is on George Washington, the man who started the American War of Independence.” The whole world became quiet! How could I know that my teacher meant that George Washington?

Of course, my subject result was awful. Sad but fearless, I decided to turn this around. I talked to the headmaster Miss Lancelot, but she said firmly: No re-dos; no new score. I felt that it was not fair, and I believed I deserved a second chance. So I threw myself heartily into my work for the rest of the school year. Ten months later, I sat in the headmaster’s office again, but this time a completely different conversation. I smiled and flashed back to the terrible moment at the beginning of the year as the headmaster told me I was good enough to skip(跳过) the 6th grade and started the 7th grade next term.

【1】________ helped me decide what my report would be about.

    A.The Internet

    B.My classmates

    C.My grandpa

    D.A coin

【2】People in the class acted strangely because ________.

A.I was too proud of my homework

B.I mistook what the homework was about

C.the whole world suddenly became quiet

    D.the teacher’s face turned to a stone

    【3】I ________ after I failed the subject.

A.worked harder to prove my ability

B.started to study from the 7th grade

C.was so frightened at the awful result

D.was given a second chance to redo the work

【4】We can infer(推断) from the passage that ________.

A.the headmaster didn’t like the writer at all

B.the writer’s classmates felt sad at his mistake

C.the writer knew little about American history

D.the writer’s grandpa was a very wise man

  • 26、Have you ever heard of “a ball of energy”? People often use it to describe very active children. But today we tell about invention called the soccket, that is a real soccer ball of energy. Julia Silverman explains that in fact the soccket is a portable generator(便携式发电机).

Julia Silverman and Jesscia Mattews developed the soccket as part of a group project for an engineering class at Harvard University.

There are mechanisms (装置) in a soccket. When you kick, hit or throw it, energy can be kept in it by these mechanisms instead of disappearing into the environment. Then the user can put something directly into the ball, like a lamp, or a mobile phone charger(充电器)so that they can get energy from it. For every fifteen minutes of the game play, the soccket can provide enough electricity for an LED lamp for 3 hours, and the ball can serve about 24 hours’ electricity.

The International Energy Association reported last year that nearly one and a half billion people in the world had no electricity to use, and most of them live in sub-Saharan Africa and in India and other counties in Asia.

Julia Silverman and Jessica Matthews both had experiences in developing countries before they began the project. They knew that power shortages are a really serious problem in some areas.

There’s an energy crisis in the world. One out of every five people in the world don’t have any electricity. And besides that, there are a lot of health problems because what people use instead of the electricity are harmful choices like kerosene(煤油) lamps, which produce a lot of smoke.

Julia Silverman says the soccket ball is one small solution(解决方法) to a big problem. Jessica Matthews and Julia Silverman hope their soccket ball will shine more light on the problem of power shortages. It offers people a chance to put their energy into the world’s most popular sport and get some energy in return.

    A.an invention

    B.an active child

    A.fifteen minutes

    B.half an hour

    C.six hours

    D.three hours

【3】The underlined word “crisis” in the passage means ________.

    A.a time of safety

    B.a time of difficulty

    C.a time of success

    D.a time of happiness

【4】We can infer (推断) from the passage that ________.

  • 27、   WeRun is a mini-app within WeChat. And there is a leaderboard among friends that allows users to see how many steps their friends walk. We can learn about a person just by knowing his step count.

Anyone who has fewer than 50 steps in one day is probably ill, or could be sad. Maybe they just want to stay in their bedrooms. Or perhaps he or she is just too lazy to get out of bed! It's easy to walk up to a few hundred steps. So someone who takes fewer than 500 steps a day may relax with favorite video games. Or, if it's the last day of summer vacation, they could be students who are busy finishing their homework. Another possibility is that the user is a woman who stays home instead of going out because she can't decide what to wear!

It's common to see WeRun users take between 500 and 8,000 steps. Most students and commuters have a step count like this. Workers and salespersons are likely to take 8,000—30,000 steps per day. They need to be on the move all the time. If it’s a weekend, however, then these WeRun step counts might belong to couples who go shopping.

More than 30,000 steps: anyone with a step count on the top of the leaderboard is worth praise. Mostly they're couriers, cleaners and so on. They're the people who help us and keep our environment nice and clean.

The number of WeRun users has increased a lot. To some degree, a person's WeRun step can reflect his character. And sometimes we can infer one's job or how he or she is feeling that day from his or her step count. But if you want to know more about a person, maybe you can take a closer look next.
