24、 Hangzhou, a city in East China, held the 2019 World Environment Day celebrations. It sets an example for air pollution control.
Over the past ten years, Hangzhou government has been improving bike-friendly infrastructure for cyclists. A smart card allows users to easily use all kinds of public transport. "There have been 760 million rides in total, and that's almost half the population of China," says an officer. "So far, more than 400 cities in China have chosen our project. Our dream is to promote our mode across China and all over the world." As a result, cycling has become a popular choice for both local citizens and tourists, and the efforts of the Government-run company have been praised by many countries in the world.
As well as leading the Chinese cycling return, Hangzhou is also home to a creative way to encourage more green lifestyles. It puts an app called Ant Forest into use which is helping to stop desertification, cut air pollution and plant millions of new trees.
The “Ant Forest” mini- program is a Hangzhou based project from Chinese payment app Alipay. It encourages users to take small, environmentally friendly actions in their daily life, such as cycling rather than driving to work, walking or recycling clothes. When users perform any carbon-reducing activities, they are rewarded with "green energy" points. As they have enough points, a real tree will be planted. According to Ant Financial, more than 100 million trees have been planted by now.
Hangzhou's achievements in environmental protection are just a small part of those in China. China's consistent efforts battling the air pollution have paid off.

25、You may have heard the saying “The Yangtze River is China’s mother river”. The main route of the Yangtze River is almost 6,400km long. As the world’s third-longest river, its valley(流域)covers one-fifth of China’s land area. The Yangtze River Economic Zone(长江经济带)covers 11 provinces and cities, making up about 40 percent of China’s total population and GDP.
On Dec, 26, 2020, China’s top legislature(立法机关)passed the Yangtze River Protection Law, which took effect on March 1, 2021. It is the first law to protect a waterway in China.
The “mother river” is in great need of protection because something is wrong with it. For example, because of overfishing and water pollution, the river’s Chinese paddlefish(白鲟)has died out after surviving for 150 million years. There’re also desertified(荒漠化的)land and soil pollution near the upstream part of the river in Qinghai Province.
The Yangtze River Protection Law includes bans(禁止)on activities that could damage(破坏)the river. It also includes heavier punishments for those who don’t follow the law. According to the law, fishing will be banned in all of the Yangtze River’s natural waterways, including its major tributaries(支流)and lakes. Those who are caught fishing will be fined(罚款)50,000 to 500,000 yuan. Sand mining(采沙)will be strictly limited in the river valley. Many companies are mining sand along the river, as sand is a rare resource(稀有资源). However, this has led to lower water levels on the river, which has caused the river’s water quality to decline(下降).
Companies operating along the river will turn to green development. Companies that produce dangerous chemicals will be relocated(搬迁), the law says.

26、Many years ago, my dad was facing a serious heart condition. He was unable to do a steady job. He would suddenly fall ill and had to be admitted to the hospital.
He wanted to do something to keep himself busy, so he decided to volunteer at the local children’s hospital. My dad loved kids. It was the perfect job for him. He worked with the seriously sick children. He would talk, play and do arts with them.
One of his kids was a girl with a rare disease that paralysed(使瘫痪)her from the neck down. She couldn’t do anything, and she was very depressed. My dad decided to try to help her. He started to visit her in her room, brushes and paper. He stood the paper up, put the paintbrush in his mouth and began to paint. He didn’t use his hands at all. All the while he would tell her, “you can do anything you set your mind to.” At the end of the day, the girl began to paint using her mouth.
Soon after, the little girl was sent home because the doctors felt there was nothing else they could do for her. My dad also left the children’s hospital for a little while because he became ill again. Some time later after my dad had recovered and returned to work, the little girl came in. But this time she was walking. She ran straight over to my dad and hugged him really tight. She gave him a picture she had done using her hands. At the bottom it read, “Thank you for helping me walk.”
My dad would cry every time he told us this story, and so would we. He would say sometimes love is more powerful than a doctor. And my dad—who died just a few months after the little girl gave him the picture—loved every single child in that hospital.

Jimmy and Tommy were good friends. They both attended the same class in a school. Tommy was a clever boy. He could answer questions cleverly in class. He was quick at thinking. It seemed that everything was easy to him. He never seemed to work hard. He spent much time on football or other games.
Jimmy was not so clever as Tommy. He was slow in his work. But he was hard-working. He worked hard and steadily(扎实地) at his lessons day after day.
In the final examination of the term, everyone thought Tommy would be the first in the class. But it was wrong. The slow but hard-working Jimmy got the first place.
