  • 24、American high schools have a dropout rate (辍学率) of up to 50%. There are many reasons for students leaving school:

For two thirds of the dropouts, motivation (动力) is the problem. They can’t just work hard enough.

Almost half of them said that they had missed so many classes that they could not follow any more.

Many said that they were not ready well enough in their earlier school.

For a third of them, getting a job is more important than finishing school.

High school dropouts have more problems in their future lives. They are more likely (可能的) to be out of work or live a poor life. There is also a big difference in income (收入) if you compare high school dropouts with graduates. A study shows Americans with a bachelor’s degree (学士学位) get about $50,000, those with a high school diploma about $28,000 and dropouts only about $20,000.

Many younger students do not understand the influence of dropping out of school. They often need better teachers, more lessons to get good grades in subjects and more help with learning problems. • 25、Is modern life moving too fast? Do you feel as if you are running hard, but staying in the same place? Well, you are not alone. According to a recent study, 78% of the young people say the “sped-up” pace (节奏) of modern life is making them feel really tired.

Rapid changes in technology and society are the main causes of the problem. And the continuous bombardment (轰炸) of information can be another cause. With everyone connected by smartphones, young people are keeping up to date with the newest, the latest and the coolest things happening around them. No one wants to miss a hot topic. And with all the videos, games and messages they get from smartphones, they feel uncomfortable with times when it’s quiet—it’s so boring!

Is there a way to help stop the “sped-up” life? Yes, there is. Turn off your smartphone! Staying away from your phone for a few hours each day will put you back in control of your life. Even Bill Gates and Steve Jobs were worried about the influences of the technologies they had created. They didn’t allow their own kids to use the smartphones and the Internet for too long. As human beings, we are not supposed to be stimulated(刺激) all the time. It can even be harmful to both our physical and mental(心理的) health. So, slow down to visit a park, read a book and take up a hobby. It’s a little bit hard and you have to make a great effort, but it’s you who can take control of your time and life, isn’t it?

①fast-developing technology     ②all kinds of information

③influence of famous people     ④quick and direct connection with others

    A.①②③

    B.①②④

    C.②③④

【2】Why do young people like to watch videos and play games?

A.Because they have lots of spare time.

B.Because they can’t stand being bored.

C.Because they don’t want to fall behind others.

【3】Bill Gates and Steve Jobs are mentioned to show that ________.

A.the technologies are not always good

B.they were quite strict with their kids

C.the technologies play a big role in our life
