24、 It takes a lot of skills and hard work to set a world record in pumpkin-carving(雕刻南瓜). Steve Clarke, a sixth-grade teacher from Pennsylvania, is a famous carver(雕刻师). Clarke has set many world records for carving pumpkins quickly. When he competes, he must cut our two eyes, two eyebrows, a nose, a mouth, and two ears as fast as possible. But Clarke knows something else about pumpkin-carving. It’s easier to get a record than to keep it.
He took the title in 2000 when he carved a pumpkin face in 74.8 seconds. That time was 19 seconds faster than what Jerry had set. From then on, Clarke broke his own records five times. In 2006, he set his best time in Florida. His winning time was 24.03 seconds!
The only problem is that someone finally beat that mark. On October 7, 2010, David set the new record with 20.1 seconds. Clarke was not able to break that record this year, but he has planned to break the record. After Halloween, he will go to local pumpkin farms to practise designs and new skills.

26、The universal two-child policy(政策) will possibly add about 2.5 million newborn babies every year, said a professor of Peking University. According to a statement made on Thursday by the Chinese government, about 90 million couples will be able to have a second child.
The universal two-child policy will tell us the country's aging trend and if no action is taken to change this situation, there will be labor shortages in the future because of the low birth rate in recent years. Low birth rate means less adults of working age, which will cause some danger for our country’s development and the future of us.
However, before the new policy was made, the one-child policy influenced Chinese people for a long time. It was put forward in the 1970s aimed at slowing the fast population growth caused by a baby boom (爆炸)after the country recovered from three years of natural disasters in the early 1960s. Besides, with the only child becoming the center of a family, the child may be too spoiled, which can be seen in many news reported nowadays. Still, if the only child dies before his parents, it's hard to imagine how the parents will spend the rest of their lives, especially when they are old.
In late 2013, the government first relaxed the family planning policy, allowing couples to have a second child in situations where one spouse was an only child. However, as of June, only 1.5 million of the 11 million couples had decided to have a second child.
"This policy change could have a good influence on our society, and it will help to develop the economy in our country, but any such influence can only appear over the long term," Atsi Sheth, an director of Moody’s, said in a report on Friday.
【1】How many newborn babies may be added in two years after the two-child policy?

A. About 35 years
B. about 45years
C. about 55years
【4】Why should we stop the one-child policy?
A. Because the parents may spend the rest of their lives to raise the only child.
B. Because the only child will become the center of the family and be spoiled.
C. Because it will cause the labor shortage.
【5】When did the government completely relax the family planning policy?
A. In 2013 B. In 2014 C. In 2015
27、I left my hometown in London last year and now I have enjoyed working in this small city in China. Learning a foreign language opens you up to the culture and history of a country. So in order to know more about China, I started to learn Chinese.
But at times, I found myself in funny situations. When I greeted strangers in China, they began to talk a lot and very fast. They asked me questions about everything. But all I could do was to look at them with a blank face. I had no idea what they were talking about. Were they just kind, funny or impolite? Many people want to make friends with me. But I am a bit upset when I find out the reason why they need a foreign friend. They just want to practice their English. I don’t need friends like these. I like friends to share my feelings and ideas with.
However, the more Chinese I learn, the more similarities I find it has with English. In English, “thick-skinned” is used to describe a person who doesn’t care about criticism (批评). I was surprised to find that houlianpi in Chinese means the same. And both languages share some common idioms (习语). For example, “look on with folded arms” means xiushoupangguan, and “burn the boats” is similar to pofuchenzhou.
I’m still on my journey to learning Chinese. I believe that sometimes you will have the most fun on a journey.
