“I love to check my friends’ updates. 1.I also enjoy news and jokes shared on social media. ”said Ou Wei, 14, from Hongling Middle School in Shenzhen. 4.What worries parents and teachers is safety. “Many students are happy to tell their interests and personal information to their social media ‘friends’, 5.据报道这种信息可能公给他们带来危险。”said Han Songjun, a teacher at Hongling Middle School. For example, WeChat’s shake-shake function(功能)allows users to connect to other users close by. But police authorities warn about the risks of socializing in this way.
“Be careful. Do not use the locating(定位)function in any app. Do not give your name, and do not post the photos of your residential area (小区),” said Han.

24、Tanaka, a 118-year-old woman from Japan who has been certified(认定) by Guinness World Records as the world’s oldest living person, gave up her position in the Olympic torch relay.
Tanaka celebrated her 118th birthday on January 2, 2021. She had planned to carry the torch as it passed through the town of Shime, in the prefecture of Fukuoka(福冈县), where she has lived her entire life. If so, she would become the oldest person ever to carry the Olympic torch.
She even had a new pair of sports shoes for the event—a birthday present from her family. Her relatives had decided to push her in a wheelchair for most of the 100 meters, but she would walk the last few steps before handing the torch to the next runner. However, Tanaka decided to pull out of Olympic torch relay because of the spread of COVID-19.
Tanaka was born in 1903. Tanaka married a rice shop owner, Hideo Tanaka, when she was 19 years old, with whom she had four children. Tanaka worked in the family shop until she was 103. She has five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Tanaka now lives in a nursing home, where she usually wakes up at 6 a.m. and she spends her time doing math puzzles and playing the board game Othello.
She lived through two world wars and the 1918 Spanish flu, although her grandson said, “I don’t remember her talking much about the past...she really enjoys living in the present. It’s great she reaches that age! We want other people to see it and be inspired, and not to think age is a barrier.”
However, Tanaka has a few years to go before she is the oldest person ever. The record is held by Jeanne Louise Calment, a French woman who was 122 years old when she died in 1997. Tanaka has said she wants to break the record.

25、When I was about 12, I had an enemy, a girl who liked to point out my shortcomings(缺点). Week by week her list grew: I was very thin, I wasn’t a good student, I talked too much, I was too proud, and so on. I tried to hear all this as long as I could. At last, I became very angry. I ran to my father with tears in my eyes.
He listened to me quietly, then he asked. “Are the things she says true or not? Janet, didn’t you ever wonder what you’re really like? Well, you now have that girl’s opinion. Go and make a list of everything she said and mark the points that are true. Pay no attention to the other things she said.”
I did as he told me. To my great surprise, I discovered that about half the things were true. Some of them I couldn’t change (like being very thin), but a good number I could—and suddenly I wanted to change. For the first time I go to fairly clear picture of myself.
I brought the list back to Daddy. He refused to take it. “That’s just for you.” he said, “You know better than anyone else the truth about yourself. But you have to learn to listen, not just close your ears in anger and feeling hurt. When something said about you is true, you’ll find it will be of help to you. Our world is full of people who think they know your duty. Don’t shut your ears. Listen to them all, but hear the truth and do what you know is the right thing to do.”
Daddy’s advice has returned to me at many important moments. In my life, I’ve never had a better piece of advice.

26、Reading is the key to school success and , like any skill, it takes practice. A child learns to walk by practicing until he no longer has to think about how to put one foot in front of the other. An excellent sportsman practices until he can play quickly, correctly and without thinking. Educators call it “automaticity (自动性)”
A child learns to read by sounding out the letters and finding the meaning of the words. With practice, he stumbles less and less, reading by the phrases(短语). With automaticity, he doesn’t have to think about the meaning of words, so he can give all his attention to the meaning of the text.
It can begin as early as first grade. In a recent study of children in Illinois schools, Alan Rossman of Northwestern University found that automatic readers in the first grade not only read almost three times as fast as the others, but also got better results in exams.
According to Rossman, the key to automaticity is the amount(数量) of time that a child spends reading ,not his IQ. Any child who spends at least 3.5 to 4 hours a week reading books, magazines or newspapers will probably reach automaticity . It can happen if a child turns off TV just one night for reading at home.
You can test yourself by reading something new which is suitable for your level. If you read aloud with expression, with a sense of the meaning of the sentence, you probably are an automatic reader. If you read brokenly, one word at a time, without expression or meaning, you need more practice.
