四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、   For his eleventh birthday, Lin was given a gift that would shape his life. On that day his father took him to the Children’s Activity Centre and said he could choose any course that interested him. There was just one requirement: Lin would have to promise to study it for at least one year.

To that point Lin had had many hobbies, but none kept his interest for more than a week or two. His mum once gave him a bag of stamps to encourage stamp collecting. That hobby lasted a week. Then his father got him some paints hoping that Lin’s artistic side would shine through. Those paints were now under his bed, still unopened. This time Lin’s parents would let him decide.

Lin’s eyes moved down the notice board that listed all the courses on offer. He stopped at “Photography,” He liked the idea of taking beautiful pictures but the notice said that each student needed their own camera. Although Lin’s family wasn’t poor, they weren’t rich either, and a camera cost a lot of money. He continued looking.

The next course to catch his eyes was “Language Art”. He didn’t even know what that meant. His father explained that it taught people how to make public speeches. Lin, a shy boy, could think of nothing worse.

Then he saw it. “Cooking” sounded like something he’d like to do. It was inexpensive and convenient, it could be done alone and it was also creative.

Based on Lin’s hobby history, his dad had doubts, but he agreed. Much to his parents’ surprise, Lin kept his promise. He studied cooking at the Centre every Saturday, and practised at home, making delicious meals for his family. Everyone looked forward to birthdays, when they could eat his cakes. Lin got great satisfaction from the pleasure his food brought to others.

The months turned to years but his hobby never changed again.

Now Lin is an adult and runs a successful restaurant. When customers say they enjoy his meal, he still gets the same pleasure he did as a child, and remembers the special gift he received all those years ago.

1Lin didn’t choose to study photography because ________.

A.it was too expensive B.he had no interest in it

C.he was not very creative D.it was not offered that term

    2The underlined expression ________.

A.make him excited B.make him annoyed

C.get his attention D.help him see clearly

3Which of the following best describes Lin’s interest in cooking?

A.It only lasted for a short time B.It seemed to match his character.

C.It was forced on him by his parents. D.It developed slowly over many months

4What’s the best title for the passage?

  • 25、Last year, I went to Being Qizhi Special Education School for community service. Before we took the bus, my friend asked me a question. “Why are you here?” I did not know how to answer the question.

The school was not far from my school, but it looked as if it were in a different world. A group of children were waiting for us. A boy walked toward me . He held my hands and pulled me to the ground, it made me nearly kiss the earth and taste nature. After seeing this, the boy laughed. I could not understand what he was doing at first, then I was very angry. Though I was very angry. I controlled my anger.

A teacher stopped this deadly silence when she shouted at the boy. “What are you doing right here, right now?” She said. You will never see your mum again if you keep doing this. Now, say sorry! “Sorry”, he tried fearfully and nervously. I said nothing, but I realized something about this child. After lunch I asked the teacher for information about the child’s parents.

She said that the child was very different from other students, because of an illness. His family could not afford to treat him, He needed the kindness of his family, But they had abandoned him. So he lived a life with the help of the teachers and community service workers like us.

I suddenly realized I could answer the question my friend asked me at the beginning of the day.

Community service workers help others and make everyone feel better. There are so many people in the world that need help. Playing with lonely children may not make a big difference. But it can light a corner in the children’s hearts, making them know they are loved by people.

1Why did the writer get angry?

    C. learned the meaning of community service

    D. wasn’t good at answering the questions about community service

  • 26、Every living thing needs to reproduce(再生). Reproducing means creating more members of your group. In order for plants to reproduce, they have to spread their seeds(种子)to other areas. Plants have developed all kinds of ways to do this.

The simplest way is gravity. Many seeds are inside of fruit. When a piece of fruit gets too heavy, it falls from a tree to the ground. Sometimes animals will pick up the fruit and drop it in another area. That helps move the seed even farther away. Apples spread this way.

Other plants use wind to spread their seeds. Dandelions(蒲公英)are a good example of this. Dandelion seeds are so light that when wind blows, they carry dandelion seeds to new places. Maple(枫树)seeds also use wind. Their seeds are connected with long, thin leaves that look like wings. When the seed falls from the tree, its “wings” help it fly father from the tree.

Some animals help plants spread their seeds. The animals eat the seeds. While the seed is in the animal’s body, it stays whole. When the seed leaves the animal, it’s in a new place.

Ants also help spread seeds. Some seeds have a special smell that attracts ants. The ants bring the seeds back to their home, which of course is underground. They only eat part of the seed. They leave the rest of the seed underground. After that, the seed can start growing.
