1、 Do you “worship” your parents?
After I came to China, I started hearing the word “xiaoshun” a lot. It is often translated into English as “filial piety”. However, I think the translation “parent worship” is easier to understand. The basic idea behind “parent worship” is that children should always listen to their parents and do everything they can to make their parents happy.
I think many Chinese people I know would agree with the idea. I guess it is a nice idea, in theory(理论上). But I also have some Chinese friends who would disagree. This is because they have had to do things they didn’t want to, just because their parents told them to_______For example, one of my good friends had to break up with her boyfriend because her parents thought he didn’t make enough money. “孝顺”似乎有时候也是不公平的。
Most kids in the US, especially teenagers, would probably disagree with “parent worship”, too. In fact, arguing with one’s parents and being rebellious (叛逆的) is common for US teens. 我经常与我的父母就家规进行争论,而且我也不总是遵守那些规矩。
I think the best way is somewhere in the middle. Most, if not all of us, love our parents and try our best to respect(尊重) them. So of course we should follow their rules and try not to stress them out (使紧张). On the other hand, parents should respect their kids as well and give them some reasonable freedom and independence.

【2】. You can’t be so simple as to think summer will last forever. So ants gather (收集) their winter food in the middle of summer. Think ahead.

And here’s the last part of the ant philosophy. How much will an ant gather during the summer to prepare for the winter? 【4】. What a wonderful philosophy, the “all-you-possible-can” philosophy!

25、 We often reach a point in our life when we should be ready for change that will help us unlock our self-improvement power. However, there's always something staring at us right under our nose but we don’t see it. The only time we think of unlocking our self-improvement power is when everything gets worst.
When do was realize that we need to change diets? When none of our shirts and jeans would fit us. When do we stop eating candies and chocolates? When all of our teeth have fallen off. When do we realize that we need to stop smoking? When our lungs have gone bad. We see the warning signs and signals when things get rough and difficult.
The only time most of us ever learn about unlocking our self-improvement power is when the whole world is falling apart. We think and feel this way because it is not easy to change, but change becomes more painful when we ignore it.
Change will happen, like it or hate it. At one point or another, we are all going to finally unlock our self-improvement power not because the world says so, but because we realize it's for our own good.
Happy people don't just accept change; they embrace it. Unlocking our self-improvement power means unlocking ourselves out of the box of thought that is just the way we are. It is such a poor excuse for people who fear change.
Jane always tells everyone that she doesn’t have the courage to be around groups of people. She heard her family tell the same things about her to other people. Over the years, that is what Jane has believed. Every time a great crowd come, she steps back and locks herself up in a room. Jane not only believes in her story, but lives it!
Self-improvement may not be everybody’s favorite word, but if we look at things in a different way, we might have greater chances of enjoying the whole process instead of counting the days until we are fully improved. Three sessions in a week at the gym would result in a healthier life. Reading book every day would build up knowledge. And only when we are enjoying the whole process of unlocking our self-improvement power will we realize that we’re beginning to take things light and become happy.

He knew he was in trouble, so he decided to make fun of them. He was a law student at the university, so he knew the law very well, better than most people.
When the policemen came to his car, Andrew asked one of the policemen to write down in his notebook everything they said. This all took a long time because the policemen had to write down everything that he and the policemen said.
In the end, by law, the policemen had to ask Andrew if he wanted to say anything. Andrew decided that he had two things to say and the policemen had to write down. For most city people, the elevator is an unremarkable machine that inspires none of the enthusiasm or interest that Americans afford trains, jets, and even bicycles. Dr. Christopher Wilk is a member of a small group of elevator experts who c【1】 this a misunderstanding. Without the elevator, they point out, there could be no downtown skyscrapers or tall buildings, and city life as we know it would be i【2】. In that sense, they argue, the elevator’s role in American history has been no less significant than that of cars. In fact, according to Wilk? the car and the elevator have been locked in a “secret war” for over a century, with cars making it possible for people to spread horizontally (水平地), and elevators pushing them toward life in close groups of towering vertical (垂直的) columns.
If we tend to ignore the significance of elevators, it might be because riding in them tends to be such a brief, boring, and even awkward experience one that can involve unexpectedly meeting people with whom we have nothing in common, and an unpleasant a 【3】 of the fact that we’re hanging from a cable in a long passage.
In a new book, Lifted, German journalist and cultural studies professor Andreas Bernard directed all his a 【4】 to this experience, studying the origins of elevator and its r【5】 to humankind and finding that riding in an elevator has never been a totally comfortable experience. “After 150 years, we are still not used to it”, Bernard said. “We still have not exactly learned to cope with the mixture of closeness and displeasure.” That mixture, according to Bernard, sets the elevator ride apart from just about every other s【6】 we find ourselves in as we go about our lives.
Today, as the world’s urban population explodes, and cities become more c【7】 and taller, America’s total number of elevators—900,000 at last count, according to Elevator World magazine’s “2012 Vertical Transportation Industry”—are a force that’s becoming more important than ever. And for the people who really, really love them, it seems like high time that we looked seriously at just what kind of force they are.
