24、Most of us have three meals a day. We take food for granted(理所当然). And we don’t think about it. But experts argue that a food crisis is coming. This crisis is going to make us change the way we think about food.
Food is in great need because of the growing world population. By 1960, the population was three billion. It doubled to six billion by 1999. By 2050, this planet will need to feed at least nine billion people. As a result, the food prices will get higher and higher.
So, what can a hungry, crowded world do? One suggestion is to eat less meat. Meat uses more natural resources(资源) than grains (谷物).It requires more land to produce one pound of meat than to produce one pound of grain. It also requires between 5 and 10 times more water than vegetables. So, eating less meat will provide more land for farming, and it will save water.
To eat less meat, people will need to change their eating habits. That will not be easy. Americans, for example, always love meat. In general, they eat twice as much meat as people in other countries. At the same time, in developing countries like China and Brazil, sales of meat have doubled in the last 20 years. They will double again by 2050. Demanding for meat will continue to put pressure on natural resources.
World population is increasing, resources are becoming fewer, and food prices are rising. Therefore, we need to rethink what we eat every day. For meat lovers, we don’t need to give up meat completely. But we need to eat more grains and less meat.

26、In early November of 1503, during Christopher Columbus’ fourth and final trip to America, his ship was seriously damaged in a storm. Columbus and his men had to live on a small island for several months while they tried to repair their ship and return to Spain.
At first, the local people on the island were very kind to the European visitors, giving them all the food and clothes they needed to survive. However, as the months passed, the local people became more and more unhappy with their guests, who were tricking and stealing from them. Finally the locals decided to stop helping. Without food or any way to leave the island, Columbus’ group was soon in serious trouble.
Luckily for Columbus, he had a book about the stars and planets on his ship. It described the movements of all the objects in the night sky. The book, written by a well-known German scientist, said there would be a total lunar eclipse (月食) on the evening of February 29, 1504 and how long it would last.
Columbus worked out the difference in time between Germany and North America. He then had a meeting with the local leaders just before the eclipse would take place. In this meeting, Columbus told them his god was angry because the local people were no longer giving food. So his god would take away the moon to punish them. At the moment Columbus finished talking, just as he had planned, the moon began disappearing.
The local leaders grew frightened and quickly agreed to provide Columbus with food and anything else he wanted. But first, Columbus’ god had to return the moon. Columbus told them he would have to discuss the idea with his god on his ship. Knowing the moon would stay completely hidden for about 48 minutes, Columbus returned just before the moon began to reappear. From that day on, until they finally left, Columbus and his men no longer had any trouble getting the food they needed.

【4】What can we learn about the Europeans from the passage?
A. They all believed in god.
B. They never returned to Spain.
C. They admired the local people.
D. They caused their own problems.
27、As we become richer and richer, we are producing more and more rubbish. The Asian Development Bank(ADB) says that our largest cities produce 760 000 tons of solid waste every day. It predicts(预料) that there will be an increase—to 1.8 million tons—by 2025. It seems too much to deal with. “The growing waste is simply trying to cover our cities,” says Michael Lindfield, a specialist of ADB in Manila.
The proper treatment of rubbish is beyond the financial resources(金融资源)of many countries. The World Bank says some governments are spending as much as half of their budgets(预算) dealing with rubbish. And even so, it is common that half of all the waste goes uncollected.
Much of the added difficulty is packaging from consumer(消费者)products and the products themselves—all of which need years, even centuries to decompose(化解). Lindfield believes that four of every five products we buy are thrown away after a single use. It all makes the work to deal with solid waste much more expensive.
The rubbish is more than just an environmental problem—it also influences national economies(经济) by disturbing the world market, discouraging tourism and slowing down industrial development.
Lots of rubbish also influences the look of our cities. As he walks to work from his home in Bangkok every day, Chatchat Mutita, a 36-year-old advertising specialist, must pass a lot of ugly, smelly rubbish that isn’t collected until late at night. He says things get worse when it rains because some yellow water will stream from the rubbish to the sidewalk.
Modern technology can make the problems of open dumps less serious. But Chettiyappan Visvanathan, a professor at the Asian Institute of Technology in Pathumthal, Thailand, believes that there are no engineered facilities(设备) in nine of every ten dumps all over the country. Some countries depend on most solid waste to produce energy, but there’s a growing problem of air pollution. Burning is far more dangerous than open dumps. The ADB says the growing rubbish must be dealt with by the “3Rs” —reducing the waste, reusing things that are being thrown away and recycling materials.
