24、A school bus is used to take children to and from school.
In the USA, about 450,000 school buses take more than 25 million children to and from school. The yellow school bus is a US icon (象征). Yellow became the color of school buses in the USA in 1939. Dr. Frank got the good idea. He said it was easy for people to see yellow buses and the black letters on them in early morning or late afternoon. That would make children safer.
There are not many school buses in Britain, and they are not yellow. They have trackers (追踪器) on them, so children are being tracked while they travel to and from school by bus. The trackers let parents know where the school bus is and whether their kids are on the bus.
Kindergarten (幼儿园) is a difficult time for some kids. It's the first time for them to go away from their parents. To make kids love their school, Japanese kindergartens and schools have colorful buses. The buses can easily make children want to take them to go to school. Even some parents want to take them, too!

25、Imagine you got a bad grade on a test. What kind of thoughts would be running through your head? When something difficult like this happens, a lot of us will be hard on ourselves. Now imagine it were your friend who got a bad grade—what would you say to him? Most people say that they would be much kinder to their friend and would say something supportive. They would show their friend compassion, which means they would feel what their friend was feeling and wish to help him. When people show the same level of compassion to themselves, they are practising self-compassion.
One way to think of self-compassion is by breaking it down into three parts. The first part is called mindfulness. Mindfulness just means being honest about how you are feeling without pretending (假装) that everything is okay, and without exaggerating the situation. For example, imagine you have plans to go to the beach on the weekend. When it is time to go, it starts to rain and you cannot go. A mindful response might be to say, “I am disappointed that I can’t go to the beach today”, rather than “I do not care, I did not even want to go to the beach”, or “This is the worst day ever!”
The second part of self-compassion is called common humanity. Failure, imperfection and disappointment are part of the shared human experience. Common humanity reminds us that we are not alone in how we are feeling, and it can make us feel more connected with others around us.
The third part of self-compassion is called kindness. It can help to think about what you might say to a good friend or what a good friend might say to you. You can also take actions to support your body and mind, like getting enough sleep or watching a funny movie.
Some people worry that if they are kind to themselves, they will not try to do challenging things. But being self-compassionate does not mean that you do not want to make changes. It just means that, while you are doing something difficult you can support yourself rather than beat yourself up. Reminding yourself that we all find new tasks challenging, and that we all might fail sometimes, can help us be less discouraged and more motivated to improve ourselves.
Being self-compassionate can set the stage (舞台) for better health, relationships and general well-being. However, it is also important to remember that when you are kind to yourself, the bad feelings and difficult situations will not go away, and they will always be a part of life. The more you open your heart to this reality instead of continually fighting against it, the more you will be able to feel compassion for yourself.
【1】People may need to be self-compassionate when _______.
A.helping a friend out of trouble
B.performing poorly on the stage
C.being overproud of successfulness
D.making great progress in their work
【2】The word “exaggerating” in Paragraph 2 most probably means _______.
A.influencing
B.examining

A.Accepting imperfection helps us practise common humanity.
B.Being kind to yourself makes difficult situations go away.

【4】What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage?

D.To suggest treating yourself like you’re your own best friend.

Dear Estelle,
I hope you’re well and not working too hard! I’m busy preparing for my exams these days. That’s why I haven’t written for such a long time. I can’t wait for the holidays but I’ve really enjoyed this term.
Since the beginning of this year, we’ve been doing this project called “World Class”. Have you heard of it? Not everyone in the class could take part, but luckily I could. The school chooses a “twin school” in a completely different area of the world. Our head teacher chose a school in Uganda(乌干达). They gave us someone to write to from that school. For three months, I’ve written to a girl called Louisa, who is the same age as me.
It’s been so interesting to hear about her life. I can’t believe that her school doesn’t have any electricity. She goes to school from eight o’clock in the morning until six o’clock in the evening. I can’t believe how lucky we are here! She’s also told me that she often can’t go to school because she has to look after her baby brother and sister. She’s tried to teach me some of her language and it’s really difficult.
I love it because it’s the first time I’ve thought about what life must be like somewhere else. I can’t believe people miss classes here when everything is so easy for us. I hope more people could help out with projects like this. At the weekend, we are going to have a sports day to help raise money to send to the school. Perhaps one day I’ll be able to go to Uganda and meet Louisa.
Lots of love,
Suzanne

27、I grew up in New Hampshire, a small town in South Canada, where in my father’s words for the seasons were “Spring, Summer, Fairtime and Winter!” At that time, a week-long fair was held in the town every autumn. Thousands of people from other towns came to sell and buy things. It was the busiest time of the year.
When “Fairtime” came, my grandma became the most “useful” and busiest person of the family. Grandma was a kind, well-educated old lady. She was good at cooking. All her relatives liked the food she cooked. During “Fairtime”, they would come to live in her house and have meals there. Grandma was always happy to look after them.
Year after year, many people moved to big cities. There was no longer “Fairtime”. Grandma became very old and was gradually(逐渐地) going blind. My parents and I moved to live with Grandma in her house. We did our best to make her day-to-day life as comfortable as possible. I was at high school then. What I often did at home was to help Grandma with the daily newspaper’s crossword puzzle.(填字游戏) However, she didn’t look happy. She often sat in her room for hours, without saying a word.
To attract people to move back, the Town Hall decided to reopen the fair. One day, when I came back from school, I saw Grandma wearing her glasses, washing the dishes in the kitchen. With a big smile on her face, she looked a lot much younger. She told me that her two nieces(侄女)would come. “They said the food I cooked was very delicious and they want to stay in my house again,” Grandma said happily. “They will stay here for one week and we can have a big party. That must be the busiest week I’ve had in years!”
I suddenly realized that Grandma didn’t want to be looked after. She wanted to be “useful”, appreciated and helpful.
