Today, a man talked very loud on his phone on a train between Malvern and Reading, making many passengers upset. I wonder how he would react (反应) if I were to read my newspaper out loud on the train. I have never had the courage to do it, though.

    Pak50 ●57 minutes ago

Why not give it a try? Perhaps you should take lessons on a musical instrument. The late musician Dennis Brian is said to have asked a fellow train passenger to turn off his radio. When his request was refused, he took out his French horn (号) and started to practice.

    Angie O’Edema ●42 minutes ago

I don’t see how musical instruments can help improve manners in public. Don’t do to others what you wouldn’t like to be done to yourself. Once, a passenger next to me talked out loud on his mobile phone. I left my seat quietly, giving him some privacy to finish his conversation. He realized this and said “Sorry” to me. When his phone rang again later, a bit of respect and cooperation (合作) can do the job better.

  • 26、When I was growing up in America, I was ashamed of (感到难为情) my mother’s Chinese English. Because of her Chinese English, she was often treated unfairly. People in department stores, at banks, and at restaurants did not take her seriously, did not give her good service, pretended(假装) not to understand her, or even acted as if they did not hear her.

My mother realized that she was poor at English. When I was fifteen, she used to have me call people on phone to pretend I was she. I was made to ask for information or even to shout at people who had been rude(粗鲁的) to her. One time I had to call her stockbroker(股票经纪人). I said in an adolescent(青少年的) voice that was not very certain, “This is Mrs. Tan.” My mother was standing beside me saying, “Why he doesn’t send me check, already two weeks late.”

And then, in perfect English I said: “I’m getting rather worried. You agreed to send the check two weeks ago, but it hasn’t arrived.”

My mother then talked more loudly. “What he want? I come to New York to tell him in front of his boss.” And so I turned to the stockbroker again, “I can’t accept any more excuse. If I don’t receive the check immediately, I am going to have to speak to your manager when I am in New York next week.”

When I was a teenager, my mother’s broken English embarrassed(令人尴尬) me. But now, I see it differently. To me, my mother’s English is perfectly clear, perfectly natural. It is my mother tongue. Her language, as I hear it, is vivid, direct, and full of observation and wisdom. It was the language that helped me see things, express ideas, and make sense of the world.

  • 27、Follow the countryside code

Autumn is a lovely time for getting in the countryside to appreciate all the beautiful colours on the trees. However, did you know that there are guidelines for enjoying the great outdoors? Here are the main things that you need to know.

While much of the countryside is available to the public, many areas are also private. Follow signs and stay on planned paths to avoid damaging crops, disturbing animals or getting lost. Use gates and paths. Leave gates as you found them or follow instructions on signs to prevent animals from escaping or being unable to reach food.

    ③Leave nothing behind

If you have a picnic, make sure you clear up afterwards and take all your litter home. Rubbish can be harmful to wildlife. If you have a dog, bag any dog poo and bin it if you can, or take it home. Never light fires and only have barbecues if there are signs.
