四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、

Could you imagine being in a car driven by a computer, not a human? Recently, China has made a big step toward self-driving technology. Since August, 2022, driverless taxis can run on roads in Wuhan, Chongqing, Shenzhen…

Why do we develop self-driving cars? Self-driving cars give us many benefits(好处). They use computers to sense the things around them and make better use of space. This means fewer traffic jams(堵塞) and better parking of cars. For disabled or blind people, self-driving cars can also help them get around more easily.

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, each year more than 135 million people are killed on roads around the world. Many more get hurt. Self-driving cars could reduce road accidents by 90 percent and save governments a lot of money. The main cause of car accidents is human error. By using computers, self-driving cars don’t make poor decisions or lose focus like humans do.

But self-driving cars aren’t perfect. If something unexpected on the road happens, self-driving cars can’t react(反应) as fast as a human driver could. Also, during weather events like heavy snow, self-driving cars would be difficult to see the lines on the road. It might lead to an accident. The car’s computer system could also get hacked(非法入侵) by someone, causing it to crash or change its destination(目的地).

It’s clear that there is a lot of work to do to make self-driving cars a common and safe sight(景象) on roads. And China is taking the lead in making this happen.

【1】What is the benefit of self-driving cars?

    A.They don’t need parking lots.

B.They react faster than humans in bad weather.

C.They allow disabled people to travel more freely.

D.They cost less money to make and repair.

【2】The underlined word “error” is similar to ________.

    A.mind

    B.mistake

    C.idea

    D.advice

【3】Why can self-driving cars help reduce road accidents?

A.Because there will be fewer traffic jams.

B.Because they can correct human mistakes while driving.

C.Because their computers don’t “lose focus” like humans do.

D.Because their computers know all road accidents ahead of time.

【4】What is Paragraph 4 mainly about?

    A.The weaknesses of self-driving cars.

B.The benefits of having a human driver.

    C.How road accidents usually happen.

D.How the computers in self-driving cars work.

【5】What can we infer from the passage?

A.Self-driving cars might cause accidents on sunny days.

B.Self-driving cars are already commonly seen in China.

C.Self-driving cars often change their ways and bring lots of problems.

D.China is trying to make self-driving cars safer and more common.

  • 25、Think of somebody you really admire. You will probably find that their success didn’t come easily. As “Father of Hybrid Rice (杂交水稻)”, Yuan Longping got over great difficulties and spent his whole life working to reduce world hunger and helping to feed the country with the largest population.

Wu Mengchao, the “Father of Chinese Hepatobiliary Surgery (肝胆外科)”, focused on saving people’s lives for nearly eighty years. He performed more than 16,000 operations during his life. Holding the surgeon’s knife for such a long time deformed his fingers. Wu once said, “It would be my greatest happiness if I could work at the operating table until my dying day.”

In 1969, in order to solve the problem of treating malaria (疟疾), Tu Youyou, pharmacologist (药学家) took on the job as head of a research team. She and her teammates performed different kinds of experiments. However, the results were disappointing. Instead of giving up, they kept trying. Finally, in 1972, they made it! In 2015, at the age of 85, she received Nobel Prize.

Thomas Edison, the inventor of the light bulb believed that every failure was a step towards success. He once said, “If I find 10,000 ways something won’t work, I haven’t failed. I am not discouraged, because every wrong try is another step forward.”

Sometimes, their success was a surprise, even to themselves. The famous scientist Alexander Fleming said, “When I woke up just after daybreak on 28th September, 1928, I certainly didn’t plan to revolutionize (变革) all medicine by discovering the world’s first antibiotic (抗生素). But I guess that was exactly what I did.”

Some people only became successful after their deaths. Not like Pablo Picasso who became famous and very rich during his lifetime, the artist Vincent Van Gogh only sold one painting all through his life and that was to a friend. But he kept painting and he painted more than 2,000 artworks in the following ten years. Now his paintings are very popular and they sell for millions of pounds.

One thing all these people have in common is sticking to their goals no matter what.

【1】What do Yuan Longping and Wu Mengchao have in common?

A.They spent all their lives serving people.

B.They achieved a lot in the medical field.

C.They are remembered for their happiness.

D.They succeeded in solving world problems.

【2】The underlined phrase deformed his fingers could be replaced by ________.

    A.made him feel down

    B.got his fingers cut off

    C.gave him too much pressure

D.changed the shape of his fingers

    【3】It is clear that ________.

A.Pablo Picasso became famous after his death

B.Vincent Van Gogh painted 2,001 artworks in his life

C.it took Tu Youyou’s team about 3 years to reach their goal

D.Thomas Edison tried 10,000 ways before he invented the light bulb

【4】When Alexander Fleming discovered the first antibiotic, he ________.

A.felt too tired to stay awake

B.didn’t plan to study all medicine

    C.didn’t fully realize its importance

D.knew exactly what his success meant

【5】What does the writer mainly want to tell us?

    A.Great hopes make great men.

    B.Great achievements aren’t made naturally.

    C.Not everyone can be successful.

    D.The more difficulties, the better.

  • 26、There is an old Chinese saying, “If someone gives you a little drop of water, you should return a spring of water.” That means if someone helps you a bit, you should remember it and thank them gratefully(感激地) in return.

We should live in a world of gratitude. We should prove it with actions, not just words. We thank people who hurt us, because they teach us important things. We thank people who give us up, because we learn how to be independent. We thank people who are selfish(自私的), because we learn the importance of being kind. Of course, we should thank people who helps. We should thank people who teach us. We should thank people who care about us.

We thank our parents. They work hard all the time in order to give their sons and daughters a better life. They cook meals for us, they do the chores for us, they always give us food and clothes, they teach us what is right and what is wrong.

We thank our teachers who give us dreams. They teach us a lot of things but they ask for nothing from us. We are well-educated by them.

There are a lot of people that we should be grateful to in our life. We should find a way to thank them.

  • 27、When we see babies or pets, we can’t help gently touching them to show our love. And they give us happy feelings back. But a recent study shows that it’s different for plants.

A study, published in The Plant Journal, shows that plants don’t “like” to be touched. That’s because touching changes their genes (基因) and, even worse, can slow their growth.

Professor Jim Whelan of the La Trobe Institute in Australia gave an explanation. “The lightest touch from a human, animal, insect, or even plants touching each other in the wind, leads to a huge gene change in the plant,” Science Daily reported.

In order to test the theory, the scientists did an experiment on plants. They grew a number of plants to the age of four weeks. Then they touched them with a paintbrush every 12 hours over a 36-hour period.

They found that as a response to the touch, the mitochondria (线粒体) in the plants had been partly destroyed. The mitochondria, as Science Alert noted, are the “powerhouse of the cell. The mitochondria produce energy for the rest of the cell in both animals and plants.

If this “powerhouse” is weakened, the plants will lose a large amount of energy that should have supported their growth.

Whelan further explained to Science Daily, “If the touching is repeated, then plant growth is reduced by up to 30 percent.”

Although the process does have a strong effect on plants, usually the plants survive. Touching changes the plants, but it’s not necessarily a bad change.

According to Science Alert, frequent touching or moving plants will make them grow shorter than other ones.

The researchers believe this change, in some ways, could be helpful. It may help plants fight threats to their health such as insects and bad weather.

The new research findings have led to a deeper understanding of the plants’ response to touching. And the research might “open up new ways to reduce sensitivity (敏感性) and optimize (优化) growth in the future”, Science Alert reported.

【1】Why don’t plants like to be touched?

    A.Plants’ genes will be changed.

B.Plants will grow much taller than others.

C.Plants growth will be reduced by up to 40 percent.

D.Plants will lose the ability to fight against bad weather.

【2】What does the underlined word “weakened” in Paragraph 6 possibly mean?

    A.Becoming stronger.

    B.Becoming less strong.

    C.Becoming less changeable.

    D.Becoming more changeable.

【3】What can we get from the new research?

A.A new way to increase sensitivity in the future.

B.A totally bad and strong influence on plants’ growth.

C.A wonderful method to help plants grow better and better.

D.A deeper understanding of the plants’ response to touching.
