  • 24、   A city without cars would be very strange, right? Venice is such a city.

Venice is in the northeast of Italy. It wasn't built on land, like Beijing or Shanghai, but on more than 110 islands. Seawater is everywhere around the city.

Even so, travel isn't difficult. The waterways have always been the best ways to get around. There are 117 waterways and more than 400 bridges that can guide you where you want to go.

People in Venice move from place to place by boat. They like to enjoy the scenery and cool summer nights while taking boat trips. They can talk to other people as they go along.

Venice grew out of small islands in saltwater lakes when some Italians escaped from a war more than 1,500 years ago, and built homes there.

Water makes the city special, but it is also a big problem.

Once, people used too much underground water. This made the city get lower little by little. Now the city has gone down by 23 centimeters. Another problem is the rising seawater. The temperature has risen over the years. This has made the ice of the Arctic Ocean(北冰洋)melt(融化).

Every year, high waters hit the city in autumn and winter. When a lot of water comes, more than half of the city is underwater.

Scientists are trying different ways to stop the city from getting even lower.

    1Where is Venice?

    A.In Italy. B.In Canada. C.In England. D.In America.

2Which is the most impossible way for people in Venice to get around?

    A.On foot. B.By boat. C.By car. D.By bike.

3What seasons are dangerous for Venice because of high waters?

A.Summer and autumn. B.Autumn and winter. C.Summer and winter. D.Spring and winter.

  • 25、Manners are very important for our daily life. There are many different customs and habits among different countries. We must find out and follow their customs so that they will not think us ill-mannered. Here are examples of the things that a person with good education should do.

If you visit a Chinese family, you should knock at the door first. When the door opens, you will not move before the host says “Come in, please.” After you enter the room, you would not sit down until the host asks you to take a seat. When a cup of tea is sent to your hand, you should say“Thank you”and receive it with two hands. Before entering a house in Japan, it is good manners to take off your shoes. In European countries, even though shoes sometimes become very dirty, this is not done. In a Malay house, a visitor always leaves a little food to show that he has had enough. In England, a visitor always finishes the food to show that he has enjoyed it. The host will be pleased with that.

You have to give your present in public in the Middle East to show it is not a bribe. But it’s good manners to give your present in private in Asia. You mustn’t give knives in Latin America because it suggests that you want to cut off the relationship. You mustn’t give your food to Arabia because it suggests that you think your host isn’t offering you enough to eat .

“Come any time” means “I want you to visit me” in India. If you don’t suggest a time at once, the India will think you are refusing the invitation. But if an Englishman says “Come any time”, they will think you are impolite if you start fixing a date.

1People should know different manners in different countries because ________.

    A. actions speak louder than words   B. when in Rome, do as the Romans do

    C. practice makes perfect   D. the early bird catches the worm

2What is good manners in China?

    A. entering the room without knocking at the door   B. leaving a little food before finishing it

    C. sitting down directly after entering the room   D. receiving a cup of tea with two hands

3The underlined word “bribe” mean___________ in Chinese.

    A. 贿赂   B. 贪污   C. 礼物   D. 珍宝

4Which is TRUE according to the passage?

    A. Chinese people often give presents in public .

    B. Latin American people often send others knives .

    C. We can send some food to Arabian people.

    D. An Englishman says “Come any time” to show he’s polite.

  • 26、   Does Fame Drive You Crazy?

Although being famous might sound like a dream come true, today's star, feeling like zoo animals, face pressures that few of us can imagine. They are at the center of much of the world's attention. Paparazzi (狗仔队) camp outside their homes, cameras ready. Tabloids (小报) publish thrilling stories about their personal lives. Just imagine not being able to do anything without being photographed or interrupted for a signature.

According to psychologist Christina Villareal, celebrities—famous people—worry constantly about their public appearance. Eventually, they start to lose track of who they really are, seeing themselves the way their fans imagine them, not as the people they were before everyone knew their names. "Over time," Villareal says, "they feel separated and alone."

The phenomenon of tracking celebrities has been around for ages. In the 4th century B.C., painters followed Alexander the Great into battle, hoping to picture his victories for his admirers. When Charles Dickens visited America in the 19th century, his sold-out readings attracted thousands of fans, leading him to complain about his lack of privacy. Tabloids of the 1920s and 1930s ran articles about film-stars in much the same way that modern tabloids and websites do.

Being a public figure today, however, is a lot more difficult than it used to be. Superstars cannot move about without worrying about photographers with modern cameras. When they say something silly or do something ridiculous, there is always the Internet to spread the news in minutes and keep their "story" alive forever.

If fame is so troublesome, why aren't all celebrities running away from it? The answer is there are still ways to deal with it. Some stars stay calm by surrounding themselves with trusted friends and family or by escaping to remote places away from big cities. They focus not on how famous they are but on what they love to do or whatever made them famous in the first place.

Sometimes a few celebrities can get a little justice. Still, even stars who enjoy full justice often complain about how hard their lives are. They are tired of being famous already.

1It can be learned from the passage that stars today ________.

A.are often misunderstood by the public B.care little about how they have come into fame

C.spend too much on their public appearance D.can no longer have their privacy protected

2What is the main idea of Paragraph 3?

A.Great heroes of the past were generally admired.

B.Well-known actors are usually targets of tabloids.

C.The problem faced by celebrities has a long history.

D.Works of popular writers often have a lot of readers.

3What makes it much harder to be a celebrity today?

A.Lack of favorable chances. B.Not enough social recognition.

C.Availability of modern media. D.Huge population of fans.

4What is the author's attitude toward modern celebrity?

    A.Sincere. B.Sympathetic.

    C.Disapproving. D.Unbelieving.

    (注意:考生将答题卡相应位置涂黑。正确的涂A,错误的涂B)

On her second or third day behind the counter, Cynthia received a phone call from her nine-year-old son, Jessie. He needed a baseball glove for Little League. She explained that as a single mother, money was very tight, and her first check would have to go for paying bills. Perhaps she could buy his baseball glove with her second or third check. When Cynthia arrived for work the next morning, Patricia, the store manager, asked her to come to the small room in the back of the store that served as an office. Cynthia wondered if she had done something wrong or left some part of her job incomplete from the day before. She was concerned and confused.

Patricia handed her a box. I overheard(无意中听到)you talking to your son yesterday, she said, and I know that it is hard to explain things to kids. This is a baseball glove for Jessie because he may not understand how important he is, even though you have to pay bills before you can buy gloves. You know we cant pay good people like you as much as we would like to, but we do care, and I want you to know you are important to us.

The selflessness(无私)and love of this convenience store manager proves that people remember more how much an employer cares than how much the employer pays.

【1】Jessie needed a baseball glove for Little League.

2Patricia, the store manager and her employer began to talk in the small room in the back of the store that served as an office.

3Jessie was going to take part in Little League, but his father didnt have enough money to buy things like a baseball glove.

4When Cynthia was asked to go to the office, she was happy and moved.

5From the story we know sometimes people cares one another more important than many things even wealth.
