24、Now, cities large and small often have remains of earlier historic streets and sidewalk pavements(人行道). Yet they often go unprotected even when they may be older than historic buildings that have enjoyed protection for tens of years.
There are many reasons to protect historic pavements — culture value, economics(经济) and public safety. Pavements played an important part in the modernization(现代化)of city environments in the 19th century.
Before the laying of pavement, streets of dirt caused many problems to people, especially in wet weather when they became muddy(泥泞的), which brought much trouble to people’s life.
To solve the problem, cities experimented with different kinds of materials to balance durability(耐用性), economic, sources of materials and noise considerations.
The earliest pavements in many cities were made of rounded stones. They were cheap and durable, but rough and noisy. Loose stone pavements were cheap and smooth, but not very durable. Wood also appeared in the 1850s as a popular choice — smooth, quiet and affordable, but not very durable.
In many cities and towns, brick(砖) streets are the only historic pavements that have survived. This fact covers up the truth of pavement experimentation between the 1850 s and 1920s, when a city could use up to a dozen different paving materials at the same time! Indeed, each city developed a unique “pavement identity” in the materials chosen and the way they were laid.
It is easy to think of the past when seeing historic pavements, as recalling “old world” city qualities. However, they are more similar to the early high buildings and parks-important city features that showed the modernization of the city. At a time when cities are becoming increasingly similar, such pavements also help define an important sense of place.

25、At last, the mid-term exams are over. You’ve done the hard work, but you can’t relax. You have to prepare for the next exams. Do you hate exams? If you do, you’re not alone. Students in other countries hate them as well.
Luckily for them, British students have fewer exams than Chinese students. And they only have them once a year. Every summer they take a test in each subject. Each test lasts about an hour. These exams don’t count for much. Even if a student does really badly they still progress to the next year. When the results come out they are then placed in an end-of-year report. The report is sent to the child’s parents. It describes how the student studied at school.
This report is private(秘密), so only the teacher, the student and his or her parents see it. This means that the students don’t know how other students scored(得分) in the test. Some students choose to tell each other, but others keep it secret.
Parents’ meetings are held twice a year, at the end of the winter term and then at the end of the summer term. Children go along with their parents to meet their teachers privately and discuss their performance at school.

27、Learning to speak fluent English is nowhere near as hard as you imagined it to be. It isn’t out of reach for average learners if they learn English in the right way. Here are several ways to pass spoken English exams.
Forget about perfect grammar. Perfect grammar is important if you plan to write in a language. For speaking a language fluently, it’s not as important. Learn the basics of the sentence structure and that’s all you need. Remember you are aiming to speak the language fluently, not write it fluently. There’s a huge difference between the two.
Play English word games. You can play games — anything that gets you thinking about English words and their meanings. If your friends aren’t interested in English and don’t want to play with you, there are lots of ways to play online against a real opponent (对手) or a computer.
Concentrate on reading. Rather than reading textbooks, focus on reading novels. You’re much more likely to continue to push yourself if you enjoy the material you’re reading. Start with children’s books and work up to more difficult pieces. A great starting point for adult literature is to find a copy of your favorite book in English. Since you already know the general idea of the story, you can use that basic understandings to effectively work out what the words and phrases you’re reading mean.
Make English a part of your daily routine. You will learn English much quicker if you make it a part of your day. Speak English whenever you can, think in English, listen to English music and read English articles. This will keep your English skills at the forefront (处于领先地位) of your mind and will help you to expand on them without even realizing that you’re doing it.
