  • 25、There was once a man called Mr. Flowers, and flowers were his only joy in life. He spent all his free time in one of his four glass-houses and grew flowers of every color, with long and difficult names, for competitions (比赛). He tried to grow a rose of a new color to win the silver cup (银杯) for the Rose of the Year.

Mr. Flowers’ glass-houses were very near to a middle school. Boys of around thirteen of age were often tempted (引诱) to throw a stone or two at one of Mr. Flowers’ glass-houses. So Mr. Flowers did his best to be in or near his glass-houses at the beginning and end of the school day.

But it was not always possible to be on watch at those times. Mr. Flowers had tried in many ways to protect his glass, but nothing that he had done had been useful. He had been to school to report to the headmaster; but this had not done any good. He had tried to drive away the boy that threw stones into his garden; but the boys could run faster than he could, and they laughed at him from far away. He had even picked up all the stones that he could find around his garden so that the boys would have nothing to throw; but they soon found others.

At last Mr. Flowers had a good idea. He put up a large notice (布告) made of good, strong wood some meters away from the glass-houses. On it he had written the words: DO NOT THROW STONES AT THIS NOTICE. After this, Mr. Flowers had no further trouble; the boys were much more tempted to throw stones at the notice than at the glass-houses.

    C. be in or near by Mr. Flowers’ glass-houses

    D. play with Mr. Flowers near his glass-houses

  • 26、   There was a man who couldn't achieve his dream. So he went to a sage(圣人)for help. The sage scooped up the water and asked, “What is the shape of the water?” the sage poured the water into the glass before he could answer. The man answered, “I know, water is like a glass shape.” The sage said nothing and poured the water into the vase nearby. The man realized it, “I know, water is like a vase.” The sage shook his head and poured the water into the pot filled with sand. The clear water disappeared into the sand. The sage said, “Look, the water died away like this, this is a lifetime!”

The man said happily, “I know, you tell me the society is like different containers everywhere, so man should be like water. When you are in a certain container, you will become its shape and easily die in a regular container, just like the water, disappearing quickly, and nothing can change!”

“Yes,” then the sage added, “No!” the sage went out of the house while the man followed. Under the eaves(屋檐), the sage touched the flagstone steps and stopped. The man saw a concave(凹处), but he didn't know why.

The sage said, “In rainy days, the rain water would fall from the eaves, so the concave is the result of the water falls.”

“I understand people may be put into the regular containers, but they should be like the little drop of water, holing the hard flagstones until changing the containers.” The man said.

The sage said, “Right, this concave will turn into a hole!”

Life is like water, so we must get used to the environments. Besides, we should try to change the environments to realize our own value. Only those who keep trying can overcome more difficulties and achieve their dreams.

2What does the underlined word “containers” mean in Chinese?

    A.柜子 B.容器 C.集装箱 D.面罩

3The sage touched the concave on the flagstone steps in order to show the man________.

A.water could change everything B.it was important to keep trying

C.how valuable water was D.the flagstone steps weren't hard enough

4What happened to the man at last?

A.He realized how to achieve his dream. B.He was confused with the sage's suggestion.

C.The sage's advice wasn't useful to him. D.He still didn't know how to solve his problem.

  • 27、Sue and Joanna are two painters living in New York City. Unluckily, Joanna is ill and will probably die. In the hospital, something touching and unexpected happens. Let’s find out more in the following excerpt.

Sue looked out of the window. All she saw was an old yellow and green ivy plant. The half-dead plant had few leaves on it because of the autumn winds.

“There are only five, now,” said Joanna.

“Five what, dear? What are you counting?”

“The ivy leaves, ”replied Joanna. “When the last one goes, I’ll die. I’ve known that for two days. Didn’t the doctor tell you about it?”

“Joanna, don’t say that. Now, eat some soup and I’ll finish my picture.”

“I don’t want any soup,” said Joanna, looking out for the window. “ Now there are only four.”

“Joanna, dear, try to sleep. I must ask Mr. Berman to come up. I want to draw a picture of him as a poor old farmer.”

Mr. Berman, who was over 60 years old, lived downstairs. He was a painter, too, but he never sold anything, and he drank a lot. Sue told him all about what Joanna was saying.

“She can’t really think this will happen! The poor woman!” he cried.

    …….

Finally there was only one last leaf on the ivy plant. After a few windy days, the leaf was still there.

“Susie,” said Joanna, “I’ve been a bad girl. That last leaf is telling me that it was very wrong of me to want to die. Bring me some soup, dear.”

The next day, the doctor said: “She’s out of danger. But poor Mr. Berman downstairs is dying. There’s no hope for him, I’m afraid.”

That afternoon Sue went into Joanna’s bedroom.

“Joanna dear, Mr. Berman died today. And do you know why? One terrible, cold wet night he took a ladder and some green and yellow paint and he climbed up the ladder, and—oh, look at the last ivy leaf on the wall! Why didn’t it ever move in the wind? Can’t you see? It was Mr. Berman’s last great picture. He painted it there the night that the last leaf fell.”

  • 29、I gave my first performance when I was ten. I’d been playing cello(大提琴)for two years at that point, as part of the music program. It was lucky that my school even had a cello, a very expensive instrument. When I told Mom and Dad that I was going to be a cellist, they both burst out ________. Once they’d realized I was serious, they immediately put on supportive faces. I was eager to get a cello at that time, but they could only rent(租)one for me.

But their reaction still hurt me—in ways that I’m not sure they would’ve understood even if I had. Dad sometimes ________ that the hospital where I was born must have accidentally exchanged babies because I look nothing like the rest of my ________. They are all blond and fair and with dark eyes. But as I got older, Dad’s hospital joke took on more meaning than I think he meant.

Then, it came to my first performance. Standing backstage, listening to other kids play the violin and piano, I’d almost ________ out. I’d run to stage door and hid outside. My teacher flew into a minor panic(惊慌)and sent out a search party.

Dad found me. “You okay, Mia?” he asked, sitting down next to me on the steps.

I shook my head, too ________ to talk.

    “What’s up?”

    “I can’t do it.” I cried.

Dad put a gentle arm around my shoulder. “You know that I used to get super nervous before a show.”

I looked at Dad, who always seemed completely sure of everything in the world. “You’re just saying that.”

He ________ his head. “No, I’m not. I was the drummer, way in the back. No one even paid any attention to me.”

“He got wasted.” Mom interrupted. “He dropped his drumsticks and puked(呕吐)on stage.”

Now I was laughing. I was still scared, but it was somehow ________ to think that maybe stage fright was something I got from Dad. I wasn’t just some foundling(弃儿), after all.

“What if I mess it up? What if I’m terrible?”

“I’ve got news for you, Mia. There’s going to be all kinds of terrible things there, so you won’t really stand out.”

So I went on. I didn’t shine through the piece. I didn’t achieve a huge success, but I didn’t mess it up, either. And after the performance, I got my present. It was sitting in the passenger seat of the car, looking as human as that cello I’d been ________ to two years earlier. It wasn’t a rental. It was mine.
