Many of us have had this experience: We lie down in a bed other than our own, perhaps at a friend’s house or in a hotel room, and find it difficult or impossible to fall asleep. Is it because the bed is uncomfortable? Maybe, but perhaps there can be other reasons.
According to a new study published in Current Biology, an important reason is what the scientists call “first night effect”. They believe that one side of the brain acts as a “night watch” to warn us about potential(潜在的) dangers. It forces us to stay awake on the first night in a new environment.
For the study, 35 young volunteers were asked to sleep in a sleep lab for several days. Meanwhile, researchers watched their brain activities.
According to the researchers, on their first night, the left brains were more active than the right brains and people had a hard time sleeping. However, left-brain activity decreased as days went by, falling even to the point of complete quietness. So, the volunteers got an increasingly better sleep experience.
The findings suggest that the different rhythms(节奏) of the sides of the brain influence our sleep. When the two sides work differently, the balance between them is broken. And the brain can’t relax, just as it is in the daytime.
US professor Jerome Siegel told Smithsonian magazine, “If something unusual happens—if a door opens or you hear a key in a lock—you can be alert(警惕的), even though the sound is quite low.” It works to protect us in a dangerous environment.
More surprisingly, this situation is similar to the way some animals sleep. Whales, dolphins, and many birds can sleep with half of their brain while the other half stays awake, with its one eye staying open.
If you have ever had what you think is “first night effect”, researchers suggest that you bring your own pillow(枕头) or sleep in a room similar to your bedroom next time you sleep away from home.
【1】The cause of “first night effect” is that_____________ .
A.the left brains begin to relax B.the right brains have a hard time
C.one side of the brains is more active D.two sides of the brains need more rest
【2】Researchers find that “first night effect”_____________ .
A.protects people from danger B.helps animals sleep better
C.affects less in the daytime D.causes something unusual
【3】To solve the problem of “first night effect”, we’re advised to_____________ .
A.study the pictures of more animals B.learn from the way animals sleep
C.lie in a more comfortable bed D.get used to new environments
【4】The passage might be taken from a part of a_____________ .

27、 Coincidences (巧合)happen all the time, but last week something happened that really blew my mind.
I'm from Chicago, but I do business in Baltimore. That started on the night before an important business lunch. I usually sleep like a dog, but that night, I didn't fall asleep until at around 2 o'clock because the last time I looked, it was 1:45. The following morning, I woke up very late, as I rushed out, I noticed the number. Room 145. "That's odd," I thought.
The hotel waiter told me any bus that says "downtown" would take me there. As soon as I got to the bus stop, I saw a bus coming and I found it was 145; however. It didn't say "downtown". It came to a stop right in front of me and the doors opened. I don’t know what came over me, but I just got on.
The bus was empty. “What am I doing?' I thought to myself. I was just about to get off when I saw an envelope on a seat and picked it up. It wasn't sealed (封口)so I looked inside and my jaw(下巴) dropped. It was full of money. I started counting--140 dollars. "Almost" I thought. "That would have been strange, Then, I noticed something on the floor. A five-dollar bill had fallen out. Things were starting to get spooky(诡异).
There was an address on the envelope: Bellmore Street and you can guess which number. I had to go there. So, I waited for the bus driver to stop and asked him how to get to Bellmore Street. “Is this a joke?" he asked as he pointed at a street sign. We were on Bellmore Street. So I got off and searched for the number. My heart was in my mouth when an old lady answered. She looked at me, and then at the envelope and simply said "Oh, thanks,” and closed the door. And that was it.
I stood there for a while. Then I remembered my business lunch. "What time is it?" I thought. I saw it was 12:45. But as I was walking towards the bus stop, I realized something. My watch was still set to Chicago time, which is an hour behind! The actual time was...
