四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、Height is just one of the features your genes(基因)decide. In fact, because you have two parents, your genes provide you a height that usually lands somewhere between the height of each parent. If both your parents are tall, then most probably you will be tall, too. But if you have questions about how tall you’re going to be, ask your doctor if he or she can help you find them out.

But genes don’t decide everything. For example, eating an unhealthy diet can keep you from growing to your full potential(潜力). Getting plenty of sleep and enough exercise will help you grow to the expected height.

It’s natural that you’re wondering how fast you should grow. There’s no perfect or right answer. Generally speaking, kids grow about 6 cm a year between age 3 and the time when they start puberty.

Your doctor will know how your growth has been going over the years. 2 cm here and 3 cm there make a little difference to the height you’re at now. How have you been growing up to this height? What other changes may your body be going through?

Don’t be amazed if you seem to have grown a lot in a very short time. Everyone has a growth spurt(高峰)during puberty. The age for starting puberty is about 10 for girls and about 11 for boys. But it can be earlier or later between 7 and 13 for girls and 9 and 15 for boys.

You’ll usually begin to notice that you’re growing faster about a year after your body starts to show the first changes of puberty.

【1】If you want to know how tall you should grow, _______.

    A. you should have enough exercise

    B. you can ask doctors for help

    C. you should take some special medicine

    D. you can record your growth during puberty

【2】The Chinese for the word “puberty is _______.

    A. 童年时期   B. 婴幼儿时期

    C. 习惯养成期   D. 生长发育期

【3】This passage is mainly about ______.

    A. how the genes work in your body

    B. how your parents’ height influence you

    C. how you look like your parents

    D. how you grow to a certain height

【4】Which is NOT mentioned in the passage?

    A. Your height most probably depends on how tall your parents are.

    B. Girls’ age for starting puberty is usually earlier than that for boys’.

    C. The features showing the first changes of puberty between boys and girls are different.

    D. You may be amazed sometimes when you grow too fast.

  • 25、When you and your family go out for dinner, do you notice how many dishes you usually order? It’s OK if you finish all of them. But if you waste too much food, you need to pay for it.

Last year, China’s top legislature (立法机关) reviewed (审议) a draft law (法律草案) for stopping food waste for the first time. In general, a draft will become law after the top legislature reviews it three times.

According to the draft law, restaurants should tell customers not to order too much. If customers leave too much food uneaten, restaurants can charge (收费) them for food waste. The law also bans (禁止) waiters from encouraging people to order too much food. Some restaurants may use the “N-1” mode for people to order dishes. “N” stands for the number of persons at a table. So if there are six people at your table, you should order just five dishes, which can help people control the amount of dishes in a proper way.

The draft law also asks schools to teach their students to avoid food waste. It also bans TV programs about overeating and overdrinking. Producers of such programs will face a fine of up to 100,000 yuan.

Food waste happens in many places and has long been a big problem around the world. We need to obey the law and refuse to waste food.

  • 26、The United States has many different kinds of climates. On the northwest coast, the temperature changes very little between summer and winter, but the north central states have a very different kind of climate. In those states, people wear light clothes in summer, and they need heavy woolen clothes in winter.

In the southwest coast, the climate is rainy and warm during the winter, but the summer is dry and hot.

In the northeast of the United States, summer temperatures are very different from winter temperatures. Summer is usually hot, and winter is usually cold. Spring temperatures are warm, and fall temperatures are cool.

Years ago, people in the cold parts of the United States didn’t often get fresh vegetables and fresh fruits during the summer. • 27、   During the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, when restaurants first shut down, Americans started cooking more at home. They had more leftovers (剩菜). In general, leftovers can be a convenient future meal. But they have a dark side, too.

Leftovers and other unspoiled (未损坏的) foods that we throw away are called food waste. We create food waste in many places—on farms, in supermarkets, at restaurants and even at home. It is a large problem that wastes resources and causes pollution.

For example, growing, packaging and transporting food takes a lot of space, energy and people to make it happen. When we throw food away, we also waste all of the energy that goes into these processes.

Roe and his team wanted to study food waste. They decided to concentrate on leftovers. They tracked (追踪) the eating habits of 18 men and women in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. They tracked what they ate using an iPhone app. During the 7-day study, they gathered 1,200 different foods on their plates.

They found that people were more likely to pick at leftovers and not eat them fully. Also, eating leftovers seems to inspire (激发) eating other foods. This is perhaps because the leftovers are older and less fresh. Roe says there is a big lesson on how to avoid throwing food into the dustbin: choose smaller meals.

【1】When restaurants first shut down, Americans ________ at home.

    A.started cooking more

    B.had fewer leftovers

    C.stopped cooking

    D.had fewer meals

【2】According to the passage, we don’t create food waste ________.

    A.Leftovers
