  • 24、There are reports that some developed countries have shipped broken parts of computer to China. Such a thing can be found every day though it’s against international laws. Last month Hong Kong officers found 131,000 kilograms of broken computers, TVs and phones sent from Japan. Things like this are called e-waste. Dealing with them isn’t an easy job because dangerous poisons like mercury() and lead() can be found in them. Every time an old computer breaks down, it needs dealing with safely. But at present, broken computer parts are usually buried. It may be hundreds years before they are really gone in the soil.

Many places in China are polluted by e-waste. Guiyu in Guangdong Province is one of them. This town is named as “the e-waste capital of the world”. It has to deal with 1.5 million kilograms of e-waste each year, from which it makes 75 million yuan, But many of the poisons find their way into the environment. Greenpeace, an environmental group, has found the air, the earth and rivers in Guiyu badly polluted. This year, China presents a new environmental protection law. Computer companies like Lenovo and Dell will be asked to take back their old computers. This is because the companies that make computers know best how to deal with them safely. Hopefully, the problem with e–waste will be solved in the near future.

    C. the e-waste problem in China   D. the causes of e-waste

  • 25、 “All right then—just one more piece...” Words every girl has said when they are faced with the delicious cheesecake. Of course, many of us know we may eat the whole thing in the end.

It isn’t just girls. Most of us find it hard to say ‘no’ to something attractive. However, scientists now say that willpower(意志力)is very important for success and a happy life.Scientists in different countries have been studying the influence of willpower on people’s lives for a long time. In one experiment(实验), scientists told young children that they could either have candy now, or two candies in 15 minutes. Waiting of course needed more willpower. Scientists then continued studying the children as they grew up. They wanted to see if some children always had stronger willpower. They also wanted to see how having stronger willpower influenced their lives.

Years later, scientists found that the children who had waited for two candies were all healthier, happier and richer adults. Oppositely(可能)to be in low-paid jobs, to be overweight, to have social problems.

But there is hope, Roy F Baumeister, an American social psychology(心理学)expert told us that we can train our willpower just like we train our muscles(肌肉). Even a little practice can strengthen our overall self-control if we do it regularly.

You could start by making yourself stand up straight, speaking in complete sentences, or using a computer mouse with the other hand. Scientists have found that people who manage to change little habits often perform much better in laboratory willpower tests.

Like muscles, willpower can “get tired” . Don’t try to do too many things at the same time, or when you don’t have enough energy, for example, when you are ill. If you already feel tired, you can try to recharge(恢复)your willpower with a good night’s sleep and by eating well.

【1】The example of a girl eating cheesecake is used to _________.

A.prove that girls usually have weak willpower

B.introduce the topic of willpower to the readers

C.describe girls’ special love for cheesecake

D.show the relationships between willpower and success

【2】What did the scientists conclude(得出结论) from the experiment? _________

B.Willpower is the most important to success and a happy life.

C.The children who chose only one candy would be poor all their lives.

D.The children who have stronger willpower are more successful in their lives.

【3】Which of the following is NOT mentioned about the training of willpower? _________

    A.Set a goal every day.

B.Have a good rest and eat well.

D.willpower is connected with success and they influence each other

At present, it is used in both traditional and modern music, such as in pop, rock and jazz. It has even become a solo (独奏) instrument.

As the erhu was mainly played by common people and the playing skills were passed down orally (口头地), there are few written records about the erhu that can be found. However,   【1】  start before 8:00am, which means that most students have to wake up at about 6:30am. This makes   2   almost impossible for teenagers to sleep for nine hours that the National Sleep Foundation(NSF, 国家爱睡眠基金会) suggested. Students’ health condition and their grades would   3 if teenagers could sleep for as long as the suggested number of hours.

What’s more, doctors say that lack(缺少) of sleep is the top health problem. If it is true, why can’t something be 6 to help students get more sleep? Studies show that teenagers who sleep for nine and a half hours are late for class less often and have 7 health problems.

Another benefit(益处) of starting classes later is that students’ grades would improve. Enough sleep helps students pay more attention to   8   their teachers say. And then they can have more chances to get better grades.

It is really important for teenagers to get enough sleep so that they may stay healthy and get good grades. To let students make it, classes do need to begin later.
