四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、Pandas not only are a national treasure, but also have played an important role in China’s diplomacy, known as “panda diplomacy”. According to Japanese Royal Annual《日本皇家年监》, the practice of “panda diplomacy” dates back to the Tang Dynasty, when Empress Wu Zetian sent a pair of pandas to the Japanese emperor (皇帝) to express China’s friendship with Japan.

China restarted panda diplomacy in the 1950s when China sent two pandas to the Moscow Zoo. By 1982, Ching had given 23 pandas to nine different countries and truly helped to improve the understanding between different countries. However, most of them died. So China shopped giving away pandas in the 1980s. Instead, the pandas are lent to other countries. They are to be returned to China after 10 years.

____▲____ According to Xinhua, their eating habit is one significant point. Their nutrition mostly comes from bamboo shoots. Adult pandas eat about 40 kilograms of bamboo per day. Pandas can also be quite picky. How picky? Well, they refuse to eat bamboo shoots after they have blossomed (开花).

It takes 10 years for a new crop of bamboo to grow up and many countries do not have an environment suitable for bamboo growth. This means that food has to be imported (进口). In August, Calgary Zoo in Canada said that because of COVID-19, they couldn’t provide enough fresh bamboo for pandas. This may mean that they have to send pandas back though they deeply hope these pandas continue to serve as close friends between China and Canada.

But countries are still trying their best to push this special type of diplomacy. “Our people do love pandas. We regard it as a good way to keep connection with China. We are willing to do more to develop it.” Steven Monfort, director of the Smithsonian’s National Zoo, told China Daily.

    【1】“Panda diplomacy” is _____.

A.a national treasure and an important role

B.a role pandas played in China in Tang Dynasty

C.A history written in the Japanese Royal Annual

D.a way to develop relations with foreign countries

【2】Which sentence can be put in the ___▲__?

A.Why do pandas eat so much bamboo and are so picky

B.Why can’t bamboo shoots grow well in other countries

C.Why is it hard for pandas to survive in other countries

D.Why did China send many pandas to foreign countries

【3】What is Steven Monfort’s attitude (态度) towards “Panda diplomacy”?

    A.He is supportive.

    B.He feels shocked.

    C.He is uninterested.

    D.He doesn’t mind it

【4】We can infer from the passage that _____.

A.Wu Zetian sent pandas to Japan to express China’s friendship

B.By 1982, China had given 22 pandas to nice different countries.

C.COVID-19 made it hard for some zoos abroad to keep pandas alive.

D.China stopped sending pandas in the 1980s because they mostly died

  • 25、A 3-year-old girl normally weighs around 14 kilograms. But 3-year-old Peppa, who borrows her online name from a popular cartoon, weighs 35 kilograms. That is because her parents fed her on hamburgers, rice, roasted meat and sausages almost every day.

And then they posted videos on the Internet showing Peppa gobbling (大口吞吃) all that food for money. Media reports say in one video the girl is clearly seen saying she cannot eat any more, but her parents force her to eat more to create a “big stomach queen” to draw eyeballs and make more money from people watching it. In some of the videos, the girl is seen walking with difficulty, her legs being unable to support her weight.

As the video spread quickly online, users got angry at what Peppa’s parents had done and caused the video platform (平台) to delete Peppa’s videos and no more allow her parents to land on it.

____. Even if Peppa’s parents now stop forcing food down her throat, it will still take a very long time before her weight drops to a healthy level. Besides, being overweight places her under risks of diabetes (糖尿病) and high blood pressure, which can become life-long illnesses.

Peppa’s parents, who made money at the possible cost of Peppa’s pains for life, should be made accountable and pay for their wrongdoings. On the other hand, online video platforms, which encourage such risky videos to make money, should also accept due punishment.

  • 27、A small ,white envelope stuck among the branches of our Christmas tree and it has been there for the past ten years or so.

It all began because my husband Justin hated Christmas—oh, not the true meaning of Christmas.Overspending was one thing, but compared to the difficult experience of choosing gifts—running around at the last minute to get a tie for Uncle Harry and a pair of gloves for Grandma…,spending money is nothing. I felt too tired to think of any special gifts.

Knowing Justin felt the same way, I decided one year not to buy the usual shirts, sweaters, ties and so on. I reached for something special just for Justin. The inspiration came in an unusual way.

Our son Kevin, who was 12 that year, was wrestling (摔跤)at the junior level at the school he attended; and shortly before Christmas, there was a match against a team sponsored (赞助) by an inner-city church. These youngsters, dressed in such worn-out shoes that shoe strings seemed to be the only thing holding them together, while our boys were in their blue and gold uniforms and new wrestling shoes.

As the match began, I was shocked to see that the other team were wrestling without wearing helmets (头盔) to protect their ears. Well, our boys ended up defeating them. We took every weight class.

Justin, seated beside me, shook his head sadly, “I wish just one of them could have won,” he said. “They have a lot potential (潜力) , but losing like this could take the heart out of them.” Justin loved kids—all kids, and he knew them, having coached little league football and baseball. That’s when the idea for his present came. That afternoon, I went to a local sporting goods store and bought different kinds of wrestling helmets and shoes. I sent them to inner-city church without leaving my name.

On Christmas Eve, I placed the envelope on the tree, the note inside telling Justin what I had done and that was his gift from me. His smile was the brightest thing about Christmas that year and since then the envelope has become the highlight of our Christmas.
