四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、   A team of scientists has come up with a plan to help rebuild the Arctic ice cap(北极冰帽). The ice cap is a huge area of sea ice that covers most of the Arctic Ocean all year round. Usually, the sea ice gets thicker and spreads further each winter, but this hasn’t happened in the past few years.

The Arctic ice cap is important because sea ice reflects(反射) heat and light from the sun back into space. With less ice, the ocean would take in more heat. The Arctic would warm up more quickly, and more ice would melt(融化). Without it, many animals would lose their natural homes and die out. It could also influence the weather, with more storms along the coast.

Dr. Steven and a group of scientists think they can help to build up Arctic sea ice again. They want to fix wind-powered pumps(风力泵) on the sea ice. During the winter, the pumps would spread water from the ocean over the surface(表面) of the ice and form a new layer of ice. The scientists said that this could add one more metre of ice to the ice cap in 10 years. The plan would require about 10 million pumps and it would be very expensive-about $655 billion.

Dr. Steven said his team hoped their plan would get more people interested in finding ways to solve the problem of melting ice and give everyone a good start on saving the Arctic ice cap.

    1What’s the scientists’ plan?

    A.To save animals in danger.

B.To attract people to come to the Arctic.

    C.To clean up the sea.

D.To help rebuild and save the Arctic ice cap.

2The underlined word “it” in Paragraph 2 refers to _____.

    A.heat B.light

    C.water D.ice

3What would happen if there were no sea ice?

A.The ocean would reflect more heat and light.

B.The Arctic would be much colder.

C.There would be more storms along the coast.

D.More animals would live in the Arctic.

4The underlined word “layer” in the third paragraph means________.

    A.海岸 B. C.能源 D.热量

5Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A.The ice cap is a huge area of sea ice that covers all of the Arctic Ocean.

B.The sea ice hasn’t become thicker in the winter in the past few years.

C.The more sea ice there is, the more heat the ocean will take in.

  • 26、“An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” Similarly, if we drink a little more water every day, we may find that we need to go to the doctor less often. A healthy diet is made up of water and different kinds of foods. We know that healthy foods like fruits, vegetables and fish, are important as they offer energy and fiber, without giving us much fat and sugar. But why is water important?

The human body needs water to survive. Water is important as it carries poisons and waste out of our bodies. However, doctors advise us to drink plenty of water, much more than the small amount we need to stay alive.

Some doctors believe that water is important for health in all kinds of ways. They believe that many illnesses and health problems appear as a result of dehydration—a lack of water. Most people are dehydrated at least some of time, although they probably don’t know it. It is surprising to learn that if we feel thirsty, we are already in the first stages of dehydration. In fact, we are advised to drink water before we feel thirsty.

These doctors think that health problems such as headaches, high blood pressure could be helped if people drink more water. They also believe that drinking more water can help people who are fat. Water contains no calories so it will not make us gain weight. If we drink water, we will probably drink less sugary soft drinks. Doctors also believe that drinking more water may stop people from overeating. They say that many people think that they are hungry when they are, in fact, thirsty. Doctors suggest, therefore, that we eat less food and drink more water.

There are still many health problems that cannot be solved by drinking water, so we should not stop going to see the doctors completely.

【1】From the text, we know water can carry ________.

A.energy and fiber in our bodies.

B.fruit, vegetables and fish in our bodies.

C.sugar and fat out of our bodies.

    A.It makes them hungry.

B.they think they are hungry and eat too much.

    C.Water has no calories.

D.they think they are thirsty and eat less.

【3】Doctors suggest that we should ________.

A.eat less food and drink less water

B.not eat food and just drink water

C.eat less food and drink more water

D.eat more food and drink more water

【4】Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the text?

A.People should drink water and not eat fruit.

B.Some health problems start because of a lack of water.

C.Fruit provides us with energy and fiber.

D.Drinking more water may stop people from overeating.

  • 27、When two people meet, there are a lot of ways of greeting. The ways of greeting are not always the same in different countries.

In America, two people usually greet each other with a handshake. It is a way to show respect to the other person. Athletes from opposite teams shake hands before a game for the same reason. However, most Americans don’t shake hands when they meet people they have already known well. When American friends meet each other, they might only wave, or maybe just nod their heads.

In New Zealand, there is a special way of greeting called “Hongi”. In the greeting, two people press their noses and foreheads (前额) together and close their eyes. This is an old tradition that comes from the Maori, who were the first people to live in New Zealand. Even today, many New Zealanders still press their foreheads when they meet.

Kissing is sometimes used as a way to greet someone. In some countries, important people used to wear special rings. It was the custom for visitors to kiss these rings when they came for a meeting. In France, when people meet, they sometimes kiss each other on the face.

In Japan, people bow to each other every time they meet. Even family members bow to each other. People decide how low to bow depending on how respected the other person is.

Today, new ways of greeting are created all the time. People can do this with a quick “hi”, a handshake, or even a simple smile. The important thing is that the people they are greeting understand them.

【1】The passage mainly talks about ________.

    A.different ways of greeting

B.how to be a polite person

C.how to show respect to others

D.ways of saying hello in different languages

【2】The underlined part “the same reason” refers to ________.

    A.showing love

    B.showing respect

    C.thanking each other

    D.introducing each other

【3】How low does one Japanese bow to the other?

A.It depends on how respected the other person is.

B.It depends on how old the other person is.

C.It depends on how successful the other person is.

D.It depends on how tall the other person is.

  • 28、History is the story of us, human beings. Everyone who has lived and everything that has h1 are part of history. But history is not only what happened in the past. The word also means the study of the past, through old w2 records and other kinds of facts.

Why do we study history? One r3 is that we enjoy it. A good story is even better if it is true, and history is full of good s4 though they can be terrible too. A more serious reason is to understand o5 and the world we live in. To understand events happening now, we need to know their causes. We cannot understand the p6 if we know nothing about the past. History helps us understand why things are the way they are.

Of course, history books cannot tell us everything about the past, not even everything that i7 recorded. A history of the world has to pick out the people and events t8 changed the world.

Since ancient times, great civilizations have appeared in d9 countries and regions. Usually, only three or four existed at the same time. While they lasted they changed the l10 not only of their own people, but of their neighbors, today.
