24、
I looked at myself in the dressing-room mirror unhappily. I was wearing a white leotard (紧身衣), and a white swim cap that hid most of my hair. I was one of 10 snowflakes (雪花) in our dance in school’s Winter Wonderland show.
“Grandma, I really don’t feel like being in the show,” I said. Grandma Lani looked up from what she was making. “Why, mo‘opuna?” Mo’opuna means “grandchild” in Hawaiian. Grandma Lani has always lived in Hawaii. “You love to dance.” I used to love to dance. But Ms. Tuttle gave the lead role of the Snow Queen to Christine. Christine got to wear a blue leotard and a feathery skirt that spread out like a cloud every time she spun. And she got to do a dance on stage (舞台) all by herself. The snowflakes just had to run and spin to look like a snowstorm. I sighed. “I don’t like our dance. And no one would notice if I wasn’t there. There are so many of us.” “I would notice. So would your parents.” Grandma said.
As Christine walked toward us, Grandma stopped and smiled at her. “What a beautiful costume(服装)!” Christine walked away, her skirt waving behind her. I hung my head. Grandma took my hand. “What’s up?” “And you won’t be able to see me among so many snowflakes,” I whispered.
Grandma was going to speak when something outside the window caught her eye. She took my hand and my coat and pulled me out of the dressing room and through the doors to the outside. It was snowing. Grandma held her breath and I suddenly thought of something.
“Grandma, have you ever seen snow before?” “Never, mo’opuna. In Hawaii, it snows only on the very tops of mountains. ” ①
I had seen snow lots of times, but now I tried to see it differently, like it was new. I saw snowflakes flying through the air in different directions, shining brightly at us. So many snowflakes came together to create something magical. ②
“Aloha,” Grandma whispered to the sky. Aloha can mean many things, including “love”, “hello”, and “good-bye”. “I don’t know when I’ll see something like that again.” “I do,” I said. I took Grandma Lani’s hand and pulled her back inside. ③
When the stage lights came up and the music started, I spun and ran with all of the other snowflakes. I didn’t care if Grandma Lani could see me. ④

26、Cabin hospitals save more lives
Feng Bangli, from Wuhan, Hubei, began to have a fever at the end of January and suspected that he had been infected with the virus. He tried several times to be admitted to a hospital but failed. He finally gave up and stayed at home, taking drugs given by doctors.
“At that time, too many patients were waiting to see doctors at every hospital, and it was not possible for me to get a bed,” said Feng. Days later, with the community staff’s help, Feng tested positive for COVID-19 and was sent to a makeshift hospital (临时医院) for treatment.
“Without such makeshift hospitals, many COVID-19 patients like me may never have found a bed,” said Feng.
Like Feng, over 12,000 COVID-19 patients in Wuhan received treatment and care at 15 makeshift hospitals. These hospitals were mainly used to receive patients with mild symptoms (轻症).
“Building makeshift hospitals was a key decision made in such an important moment when Wuhan was facing a formidable task of epidemic (疫情) control, and it has played an important role in both prevention and treatment of the disease,” he said.
“Makeshift hospitals have greatly eased pressure and made it possible to treat and isolate people in need,” said Xu Junmei, vice-president of Wuchang makeshift hospital.
Makeshift hospitals have now been copied in other countries. Eight makeshift hospitals are being built in Tehran, Iran, to fight against the virus. The one changed from the Iran Mall, the largest shopping mall in the country, is expected to have a total of 3,000 beds, according to People’s Daily.
On March 29, New York changed a grassy meadow in Central Park into a makeshift hospital, where it will provide 68 hospital beds.
“Considering the ways we can increase hospital capacity right now is very important,” says Dr Andrew Ibrahim, a surgeon at the University of Michigan told Architecture. “If hospitals can’t receive more patients, new facilities need to be built up.”
