  • 25、

Miss Martha kept a little cake shop. Two or three times a week a customer came in who she began taking an interest in. He was a middle-aged man. His clothes were worn but he looked neat, and had very good manners. He always bought two loaves of stale bread. Never did he call for anything but stale bread.

Once Miss Martha saw a red and brown mark on his fingers. She was sure that he was a very poor artist.

She wanted to add something good to eat to his stale bread, but her courage failed at the act. She knew the pride of artists.

One day the customer came as usual, laid his coins on the showcase, and called for his stale bread. While Miss Martha was reaching for them, a fire-engine came lumbering past. The customer hurried to the door to look. Suddenly inspired, Miss Martha took the chance.

On the bottom shelf was a pound of fresh butter. With a bread knife Miss Martha made a deep cut in each of the stale loaves, put in a lot of butter, and pressed the loaves tight again. When the customer came again, she was tying the paper around them. When he had gone, Miss Martha smiled, not without a slight beating fast of the heart.

For a long time that day she imagined the scene when he discovered her little kind trick.

Suddenly the front doorbell jangled viciously. Miss Martha felt a little scared and hurried to the front. A young man and her artist were there. His face was very red, his hat was on the back of his head, and his hair was in a mess.

“Silly!” he shouted loudly. “You have destroyed me!” He held his two fists and shook them angrily at Miss Martha.

“Come on,” the young man said, “you’ve said enough.” He pulled the angry one out, and then came back. “He’s an architectural draftsman,” he said. “He’s been working hard for three months drawing a plan for a new city hall. It was a prize competition. He finished inking the lines yesterday. You know, a draftsman always makes his drawing in pencil first. When it’s done, he rubs out the pencil lines with stale bread. That’s better than erasers. Well, today — well, you know, that butter isn’t — well, his plan isn’t good for anything now.”

【1】Why did Miss Martha put fresh butter in the stale bread?

A.Because she wanted to help the man.

B.Because she wanted to make more money.

C.Because she wanted to make fun of the man.

D.Because she wanted to stop the man from winning the competition.

    A.Rang gently.

    B.Rang noisily.

    C.Rang politely.

    D.Rang nicely.

【3】What caused the middle-aged man to shout at Miss Martha?

    A.Miss Martha hurt his pride.

B.He was too poor to buy anything but stale bread.

C.The butter Miss Martha gave him was not fresh.

D.The butter destroyed his drawing for the competition.

B.Don’t put butter into the stale bread.

C.Help others at once when they’re in trouble.

D.Understand the real needs of others before helping them.

  • 26、Political adviser Chen Zhihong suggested the city government think of a complete and unified translation(统一翻译)rules for English signs in Shenzhen.

Before making the suggestion, Chen, vice chairman of Shenzhen Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese, did a wide research on the English signs(标识)at major public areas in the city and service providers, such as Futian Railway Station, Shenzhen Book City, Shenzhen Concert Hall, Shekou Port and so on.

“There are a large number of unclear and wrong translations,” said Chen. “The poorly-translated English signs have seriously harmed the image of the city.”

Chen pointed out the main reasons behind this problem. First, there is not enough professional(专业的)guidance. Second, not having a deep understanding of English culture also leads to poor translation. In addition, it is difficult for the public to find ways to report mistakes.

As early as 2010, the Shenzhen Municipal Foreign Affairs Office made a guide for English translations for signs in public spaces in Shenzhen. It provided rules for translating place names and business activities into English. That guide, Chen thought, is no longer enough for the city today. “The guide needs to have more content(内容), such as the standardized translations for business areas, transport hubs and tourist attractions,” Chen said.

  • 27、MY CHILDHOOD

My life has just started and my life in table tennis is far from over. I know that many young people are interested in my experiences and I would like to encourage children as much as I can.

When I was a kid, I went to the Provincial No. 1 Nursery School. It was the best one at that time. It was a long way from my home, and more expensive. But my parents wanted me to have the best.

My parents may have wanted the best for me, but I still had to help out over the weekend. I had to wash my own socks or help to wash the floor. They taught me that if I made a promise, I had to finish it, even if it was really difficult for me. That lesson has helped me a lot in my table tennis life.

My father is a table tennis coach(教练) , but my parents never pushed me into playing. My first nursery shared a compound with Heilongjiang Provincial Sports Team. After school we went to the training ground and I loved to play with all the balls there. When I arrived at provincial No. I Nursery, I joined the table tennis class and my father was invited to be the coach. At that time I liked watching the sport more than playing it. When I was about six, I suddenly decided I wanted to play. I asked my father to make me a bat, and I started to learn to play with my teacher, even though my father was a much better coach.

By the time I started primary school, I loved table tennis so much that I had to play everyday. I became hungry for success and my parents still tell funny stories about how I loved to win ....

Even though I loved table tennis, I didn't imagine for a second 1 would play professionally( 职业地) . It was just a hobby for me, as I loved lots of other things as well, such as painting and calligraphy.

As a matter of fact, my childhood dreams were of becoming a soldier, a scientist, or something else very modern -certainly not a table tennis player for the national team or the world champion. The interesting thing is that sometimes what happens to us is not what we dreamt of at all.

1What has helped him a lot in his table tennis life?

A.The best his parents gave him. B.The lesson his parents gave him.

C.The difficulties he met. D.The promise he made.

2The writer   by the time he started primary school.

A.began to learn to play table tennis B.loved table tennis very much

C.told many funny stories D.knew how to win the game

3The writer hoped to become   when he was a child.

A.a soldier. a scientist or a film star B.a world champion

C.a famous table tennis player D.a worldwide singer
