24、Bananas are the perfect snack. Not only are they delicious, but they are easy to carry. So you can take them anywhere. Best of all, bananas provide different things that our body needs!
Bananas grow best in warm places that get lots of rain. They grow on plants that look like trees. The banana plant, however, is seen as a herb(草本植物) rather than a tree, because it doesn’t have a strong, woody stem (干,茎). The plants can grow as high as 30 feet. When they reach their full height, flowers grow out and then produce bananas.
Two or three times each year, the plants produce fruit. They grow together and seem like “hands”. Each bunch(丛) of bananas has about 15 hands, and so a whole bunch may have as many as 200 bananas ,and can weigh more than 100 pounds.
After about three months, the bananas are ready to be picked. At this point, they still aren’t the sunny yellow color of bananas. Farmers pick them when they’re green. That’s how they’re transported to stores. They turn yellow along the way and are ready to be sold.
It’s said that Americans have been enjoying bananas since the first shipment(装载的货物) arrived in 1876. Today, Americans eat more bananas than any other fruit. Each year, every American eats 26.2 pounds of bananas, 16.5 pounds of apples,11.6 pounds of oranges and 7.6 pounds of grapes. So you can see how Americans love bananas!

26、The weather was very good that winter. Christmas Day was sunny and bright, so Jo and Laurie went into the garden and made a snowman for Beth. They put flowers and fresh fruit for her in its hand. Jo brought her downstairs to see it and Beth laughed at its funny face. She was much better but she was still very thin and weak. After that there were presents for everyone.
Later that morning Laurie came back. There was a mysterious smile on his face when he opened the parlor door.
“Here’s another Christmas present for the March family!” he said. He disappeared behind the door and a tall man walked into the room. It was Mr March! Suddenly the parlor was full of confusion and noise. Meg, Jo and Amy all ran to their father and hugged and kissed him again and again. Then Mrs March hugged and kissed him. Everyone was talking at the same time.
“Hush! Remember Beth!” Mrs March said. Beth was sleeping upstairs.
But it was too late. Beth was already at the door. She stopped, looked at the scene and then she ran straight into the arms of her father.
It was the happiest Christmas they could remember. Hannah cooked a fat turkey and there was plum pudding and jelly. Everything was delicious. Mr Laurence, Mr Brooke and Laurie ate with them and after dinner they all sang songs and told stories about the past. After the guests left, the March family sat together around the fire.
Mr March looked at the four young faces around him with satisfaction.
“It was a difficult year for my little girls, I know,” he said to them. “But you were very brave.” He took Meg’s hands in his.
“Meg, your white hands are now rough and red with hard work. They were pretty before but they are prettier to me now. I’m proud of you.”
Then he looked at Jo.
“You were my noisy, wild boy!” he said. “But now I can see a good, strong woman with a tender heart in front of me. I’m very happy.”
“What about Beth?” asked Amy.
“Beth! Dear, good little Beth!” said Mr March. He looked at her small, thin body and held her tightly.
“We nearly lost her. Now I’m going to keep her safe forever.”
Then it was Amy’s turn.
“I watched Amy today,” Mr March said. “She is kinder and more helpful than she was. She thinks more about other people and less about herself. I am proud to have a daughter like her. I’m proud of all my wonderful little women!”

Gina was surprised to find that it was not raining in London. She stepped down from the train that had brought her from Dover to Victoria Station and put her heavy suitcase on the platform(站台). People were hurrying everywhere: through the entrances and exits, up and down the steps, along the other platforms and over to the ticket counters(柜台)where there were already queues forming. The porters(行李员)seemed to be busy helping other passengers. In Milan everyone told her that it was always raining in England. Today, however, they were wrong. It was warm and dusty just like at home. She could even hear someone speaking her native language somewhere near the station bookstore. She walked slowly towards the gate at the end of the platform where a railway official was collecting the tickets. She handed him her tickets and walked through. She looked up the station clock. Its hands were pointing to 3:15 p.m.
A young woman was sitting on a bench reading an English magazine. She looked friendly so Gina went up to her.
“Excuse me.” she said. The young woman looked up with a smile. “Can you tell me the way to circus?”
“The circus?” The young woman looked puzzled. “What circus do you mean?”
Gina shook her head. “I’m sorry. I have just arrived from Italy to attend a school for foreign students in London. It is near the circus.”
“Do you have a letter with the school’s address on it?”
“Oh, yes. Now I remember.” Gina opened her handbag and found a postcard with a British stamp on it. “Ah,” said the young woman. “It’s Oxford Circus that you want. It’s the name of an area in the middle of London. You must go down these steps and take the underground. Follow the colors.
