二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、These destinations march to the beat of their own drum. So put on your dancing shoes and head to these sweet-sounding cities.

    New Orleans

In the 19th century, slaves gathered on Sundays to play drums, dance, and sing in Congo Square. Those lively rhythms of Africa ran head on with the sounds of Europe to create jazz, a typical American art form that has inspired generations of Americans and spread around the globe. But this isn’t suit-wearing, head-nodding, polite jazz. New Orleans jazz sweeps you off your feet and makes you jump and clap and sing along.

    Chicago

Large numbers of African Americans left the South in search of better opportunities during 1916~1970 and Chicago attracted scores of these people, who brought with them the sound of the Mississippi River. Here, it changed into something sad and symphonic: blues. Blues was not born in Chicago, but it was here that it found a new voice and began to spread its message around the world.

    Memphis

Memphis is the birthplace of rock and roll. It was here in Sun Studios in the summer of 1951 that Ike Turner and his band the Delta Cats recorded “Rocket 88”, widely regarded as the first rock and roll song. But, like so many great things, it happened by accident the guitarist’s loudspeaker broke down during the recording, creating a unique guitar sound that would become a hallmark of the music.   People didn’t know how to classify it, but they knew they loved it. The rest is history.

    New York City

New York is one of the world’s greatest cities where you can listen to all kinds of music. But to experience a true New York state of mind, you have to leave the shiny towers and Broadway shows of Manhattan and head to Harlem, the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Queens to explore the city’s hip-hop history.

【1】What do New Orleans jazz and Chicago blues have in common?

    A.They sound very sad.

    B.They have similar origin.

    C.They happened by accident.

D.They are played on the guitar.

【2】When was rock and roll born?

    A.In the 19th century.

    B.In the late 19th century.

    C.In the early 20th century.

    D.In the mid-20th century.

【3】What are Harlem and Queers known for?

    A.Blues.

    B.Jazz.

    C.Hip-hop.

    D.Rock and roll.

  • 22、More cities, states and regions are committing to comprehensive climate plans to decarbonize (减少碳排放) transportation by 2040. The need for action is now, and we need to rise to the challenge quickly. Google technology is unlocking our ability to generate climate-related insights and impact on the globe.

The transportation sector is where global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are rising the quickest. In 2018, Google launched the Environmental Insights Explorer (EIE). Using AI, the systems analyze transportation trends in a city by mode, helping local governments assess their progress in tackling GHG emissions. GHG inventory processes (温室气体排放清单) traditionally take months and multiple data sources to collect, and are now highly efficient, allowing government staff to reduce the cost and personnel burden of reporting.

In pursuit of helping more cities take action against climate change, we will make transportation insights available in EIE for over 20,000 cities and regional governments by the end of the year, making it one of the largest ever collections of high-quality, globally consistent environmental data sources.

With EIE, cities have free access to Google’s unique mapping data and insights so they can decide on cleaner transport policies. As part of Google’s most ambitious decade of climate action, we’ve committed to helping more than 500 cities and local governments reduce a total sum of 1 billion tons of carbon emissions per year by 2030 and beyond.

As the window continues to narrow on carrying out policies and plans to reduce emissions, we’re collaborating with other associations, committed to addressing climate change. Our work with Cities. Climate Leadership Group(C 40) will help us better support the needs of cities. Together we can provide higher-quality transportation activity data to measure and track GHG emissions at a global scale, while also giving state and local governments resources to better understand what’s working at a local level.

【1】What can we learn about EIE from paragraph 2?

A.It takes over government staff’s work.

  • 23、Black History Month is also known as the African-American History Month. It is celebrated all over the United States of America and Canada in the month of February, while in the United Kingdom it is celebrated in October. Each and every school and university conducts various activities to make the generation aware of the importance that African-American history holds in the nation. The electronic media is filled with themes in relevance to the occasion, and many activities are carried out across the country to remember the contribution made by African-American citizens in the development of this nation.

Black History Month was first started by a famous African-American historian Dr. Carter G. Woodson in the year 1926. February was chosen as the month to celebrate the African-American history because it was the birth month of two of the most highly valued people among African-Americans. These were President Abraham Lincoln, who freed the slaves, and Frederick Douglass, who was also the first vice presidential nominee (被任命者) among African-Americans. Initially, Black History Month was known as the “Negro History Week”. This was Dr. Woodson’s attempt to encourage awareness among citizens about the contribution of African-Americans towards the building of the nation. It was only in the early 1970’s that the name “Negro History Week” changed to “Black History Month”. And later, in the year 1976, the entire month of February was declared to be the National African-American History Month, or the Black History Month.

Every year, National African-American History Month is celebrated by many activities with various ideas and themes for the younger generation. In 2013, Black History Month celebrates the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington at which Martin Luther King, Jr. gave his famous speech “I have a dream”. It also marks the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation (解放黑奴宣言). • 24、Every driver loves sailing through a series of green lights without having to stop and wait at a traffic light. Now, thanks to artificial intelligence, German researchers have found a way to reduce time spent at intersections (十字路口).

Called the KI4LSA project and funded by the Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure, the innovation is being tested. Scientists first studied algorithms (算法) taken from a busy intersection to learn about traffic patterns and where improvements were most needed. The new AI method uses radar sensors and high-resolution cameras to interpret traffic patterns in real time. They can determine the speed of traffic as well as waiting time and combine this with self-learning algorithms. Scientists are currently trying this out at a busy intersection in Lemgo, Germany, with encouraging results.

The intelligent lights are said to improve traffic flow by 10 to 15 percent, which results in money saved; the EU estimates that traffic jams create economic damage that adds up to 100 billion euros a year. Aside from reducing commuting (通勤) time, these traffic lights will reduce noise and CO2 emissions from cars idling (未熄火) at intersections.

Another exciting development in this research is the K14PED project, which studies pedestrians (行人) crossing intersections. Using AI, researchers can identify how many people are waiting at a pedestrian crossing and whether some of these people will need extra time to cross the street. Using a 3D points cloud, they can tell if someone has disabilities or is elderly without identifying the individual. Since pedestrian buttons that are presently at intersections cannot determine if some people have special needs or are elderly, this is a real win. Such a needs-based system could reduce pedestrian waiting time by 30 percent, which could then decrease jaywalking (乱穿马路) by 25 percent.

Testing will be done until the summer of 2022 in the German towns of Lemgo and Bielefeld, with researchers optimistic that it will be adopted by many countries. This technology is exciting news for pedestrians and drivers alike. It encourages safety, protects the environment, and may even give you more time to enjoy your morning coffee before heading off to work!

【1】What is the function of AI in the KI4LSA project?

A.To detect road conditions and noise pollution.

B.To provide real-time information about traffic.

C.To control traffic lights and the speed of vehicles.
