21、Everything about Pakistani (巴基斯坦的) trucks is lively, from the colors to the designs to the wood carvings on the doors. Each one is carefully decorated, and no two trucks are alike. The drivers hope people will look at their truck with love. Every driver wants his truck to be the most admired vehicle on the road.
Just off the main road between Islamabad and Rawalpindi, there are artists, welders, metalworkers, horn sellers and electricians, all busy refurbishing (整修) and decorating the massive vehicles parked in the yard. Their space, called the carriage factory area, is devoted to the maintenance and care of trucks that serve the purpose of transporting goods from one place to another while looking and sounding as impressive as possible.
Scholars have traced evidence of decorated transport in Pakistan back thousands of years. The Pakistani practice of truck painting began gaining widespread popularity soon after the country’s independence.
Trucks are covered with designs, colorful stickers and fanciful paintings—hearts, flowers, peacocks, movie stars, folk singers, animals, politicians, angels and army generals. Chains dangling off the bottom jingle and sway with the truck’s stops and turns. There are lines of poetry expressing the loneliness of the trucker.
Drivers also have their choice when it comes to the horns. In his shop, Javed Iqbal vocalizes (使发声) some of the horn sounds for visitors. Many drivers request the “rail wallah” horn, he says, the one that sounds like a train. And for those who don’t want to choose just one sound, he sells a single horn with multiple effects.
Thanks in part to the efforts of Khan, the anthropologist and filmmaker, Pakistani trucks also serve a social good. She helped launch an award-winning project in 2019 in which a small number of trucks carry portraits (画像) of missing children, along with a number to call for Roshni Helpline, a Karachi-based nonprofit dedicated to recovering them. Of the 20 or so missing children whose portraits were painted on trucks, at least five were found.

22、Most people can admit that they’ve found themselves at one point or another feeling like they are not themselves. They may feel trapped in a cycle that they don’t like. 【1】
Getting stuck in a rut (刻板乏味的生活) means you’re not sure how to go forward or backward. If you think this sounds like you, then you’re not alone. The great news is that you can turn things around and get yourself back up in no time. Take a look at the following tips.
Make a Change
The first step to getting out of the situation is to identify what it is about the circumstances that are getting you down. 【2】. In that case, you should move somewhere else. In other cases, you may hate your job. Rather than simply accepting it as your fate, start looking for new jobs. The idea is to start taking action instead of just being a spectator of your life.
Accept Things as They Are
Once you start taking action to change the situation, then it becomes much easier to accept things as they are. Acceptance doesn’t mean you accept that things never change. 【3】. Stop allowing yourself to live in denial (拒不承认). Things will be much easier to improve if you acknowledge things as they truly are. You’re in a rut, and that’s perfectly okay!
Treat Your Body Well
All too often, people don’t realize the connection between mind and body. If you’re feeling less than being stellar (精彩的;杰出的) in your mind, then it may have something to do with how you’re treating your body. 【4】. You may achieve it by doing things like eating well or engaging in more exercise. Treat your body well, and your mind will follow.
【5】
Don’t forget the importance of allowing yourself some breathing room and a break once in a while. Practice self-care by doing things like spending time with friends or getting your hair done. The idea is refreshing yourself so that you don’t burn out. Pushing yourself too hard will only worsen your rut. Recharge your battery by remembering to refresh yourself.
A.Practice Self-Care
B.Push Yourself Hard
C.Perhaps it’s where you live
D.Most people refer to this as a rut
E.Your body may tell you what to do
F.It means that you aren’t fighting reality
G.Consider making changes in your lifestyle
23、 Despite living in it, we hardly know exactly how big the Milky Way is. But new research has provided us with an answer. Using a large survey of stars instead of just models (as previous researchers did), astronomers have now determined the disk of our galaxy to be 200,000 light years across twice as large as was believed a decade ago.
Astronomers know the Milky Way to be a spiral (螺旋状的) galaxy with a flat central disk composed of spiraling arms and a thin outer cloud of stars called the halo ( 光 晕 ). Most of the stars are found in the disk, which rapidly thins out at the edges. The size of the galaxy is measured from the point at which the number of stars in the disk significantly drops, so finding disk stars is key to determining the Milky Way’s size.
Coincidentally, disk stars tend to be much younger than the halo stars. Since stars gradually build up elements over generations, the disk stars’ composition can be different from that of the halo stars, allowing astronomers to figure out which stars belong to which population.
With a process known as spectroscopy ( 光 谱 学 ), researchers studied the chemical composition of over 4,600 stars from two surveys, and mapped out which stars are part of the disk and which belong to the halo. The results clearly show disk stars much farther from the center of the galaxy than before.
The researchers still believe the density of stars in the disk gets lower in an exponential ( 指数的) manner— just farther away from each other than previously thought. Although the galaxy has been supersized, it is still smaller than its neighbor Andromeda, which measures over 220,000 light years across. While our galaxy is looking larger, it ’ s not putting on much weight. Because the outer reaches are much less dense than the center of the galaxy, the additional area is only thinly populated with stars. These few extra stars are only a drop in the bucket compared to the rest of the galaxy, so overall the mass of the Milky Way remains largely unchanged.
【1】What has new research found about the Milky Way?
A.It's hard to know its size.
B.It can be measured by using models.
C.It has grown much larger than before.
D.It’s much larger than previously thought.
【2】Where is the size of the Milky Way measured?
A.At the end of the halo.
B.At the edge of the disk.
C.At the start of the disk stars.
D.At the point of the spiraling arms.
【3】How can researchers distinguish disk from halo stars?
A.By studying their chemical composition.
B.By measuring their distance to the sun.
C.By measuring their weight.
D.By comparing their size.
【4】The underlined part in the last paragraph probably refers to ______.
A.the speed of the stars’ moving
B.the weight of the stars in total
C.the number of stars in an area
D.the size of the Milky Way
【5】What can we infer about the stars in the Milky Way?
A.They are unevenly distributed.
B.They are heavier than previously predicted.
C.They make the Milky Way larger than others.
D.They mainly stay in the outer ranges of the disk.
24、阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项
King Juan Carlos of Spain once insisted “kings don’t give up the throne(王位), they die in their sleep.” But embarrassing scandals and the popularity of the republican left in the recent Euro-elections have forced him to eat his words and stand down. So does the Spanish crisis suggest that monarchy(君主制) is seeing its last days? Does that mean the writing is on the wall for all European royals, with their magnificent uniforms and majestic lifestyles?
The Spanish case provides arguments both for and against monarchy. When public opinion is particularly polarized, as it was following the end of the Franco regime, monarchs can rise above mere politics and symbolize a spirit of national unity.
It is this apparent transcendence(超越) of politics that explains monarchs continuing popularity as heads of state. And so, the Middle East excepted, Europe is the most monarch- filled region in the world, with 10 kingdoms (not counting Vatican City and Andorra). Most royal families have survived because they allow voters to avoid the difficult search for a non-controversial but respected public figure.
Even so, kings and queens undoubtedly have a downside. Symbolic of national unity as they claim to be, their very history and sometimes the way they behave today symbolizes outdated and indefensible privileges and inequalities. At a time when Thomas Piketty and other economists are warning of rising inequality and the increasing power of inherited wealth, it is strange that wealthy noble families should still be the symbolic heart of modern democratic(民主的)states.
The most successful monarchies try their best to abandon or hide their old noble ways. Princes and princesses have day-jobs and ride bicycles, not horses (or helicopters). Even so, these are wealthy families who party with the international 1%, and media interference makes it increasingly difficult to maintain the right image.
【1】According to the first two paragraphs, King Juan Carlos of Spain
A. used to enjoy high public support
B. was unpopular among European royals
C. eased his relationship with his rivals
D. gave up his throne in embarrassment
【2】Monarchs are kept as heads of state in Europe mostly
A. owing to their undoubted and respectable status
B. to achieve a balance between tradition and reality
C. to give voters more public figures to look up to
D. due to their everlasting political symbolizing
【3】Which of the following is shown to be strange, according to Paragraph 4?
A. The noble families’ excessive dependence on inherited wealth
B. The role of the nobility in modern democracies
C. The simple lifestyle of the noble families
D. The nobility’s sticking to their privileges
【4】Which of the following is the best title of the text?
A. Carlos, a good example of All European Monarchs
B. Europe, the most monarch-filled region in the world
C. Carlos, a Lesson for All European Monarchs
