21、 21-year-old Jasmine Harrison completed the 2020 Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge in 70 days, 3 hours and 48 minutes — a new world record for the youngest female to row alone across the Atlantic.
Harrison, who’s from North Yorkshire, England, didn’t have loads of experience in rowing long distances. In her childhood, she could not even dream of such an ambition. She’d only gotten the idea three years earlier when she happened to be in Antigua, teaching swimming, and saw the end of the 2017 Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge. “Talking to a family member of a young man that had just completed it, I got to know just how amazing a thing it was. I didn’t say ‘not a chance I would do that,’ but it was more a fact of why not do it?” she said.
Every day, Harrison would row for about 12 hours, pushing her 550-pound boat she bought with some money across the ocean, covering roughly 90 kilometers. The journey left her with much time all by herself, which she said she enjoyed. But things got a little harder after her speaker fell in the water and she could no longer listen to her music.
She had other company along the way. She saw lots of sea life, including several whales. One even rose out of the ocean right next to her boat. “I’m in their environment,” she said. “It’s just amazing.”
Twice, her boat was turned over in the night by large waves. The second time, she hurt her arm quite badly. Another time, she nearly ran into a ship. When her food ran out, she lived on cookies and chocolate. In the face of great hardship and loneliness, she kept going.
On February 20, 2021, she reached the island of Antigua — the end of the journey. She celebrated her arrival with a burger and fries.

22、Meredith J. Eberhart completed the 2, 190-plus mile Appalachian Trail on Sunday, becoming the oldest person to hold the honor.
Eberhart has probably hiked over 50,000 miles in his life though he doesn’t keep track. The 83-year-old man started walking when he retired more than 25 years ago, and never stopped.
Eberhart started the 261-day, 15-state trip back in February, with the goal of beating previous record holder Dale “Greybeard”Sanders, who finished the entire Appalachian Trail at the age of 82 in 2017. The trail covers over 2,190 miles from Springer Mountain, Georgia, all the way to Mount Katahdin, Maine. However, Eberhart began his journey far from the trail, at his home in Flagg Mountain, Alabama. That added hundreds of extra miles to the route. But Eberhart wasn’t worried about that. He once hiked 4,400 miles from the Florida Keys to Northern Quebec, and another time from Chicago to California on Route 66.
Eberhart admitted that he was feeling his age and the trail got tough at points, even for an experienced hiker like himself. He fell a few times on slippery rocks, and at one point he got his elbow scratched. However, the accidents didn’t stop him.“I’ve got a couple of injuries on me, but I’m okay,”he said.“You’ve got to have incredible determination to do this.”
Eberhart hiked the trail out of order in sections so he could complete each part in fine weather. Mindful of his age, Eberhart walked at a rate of no more than eight hours each day. He finished his journey in Massachusetts, where he celebrated with champagne wine and friends. And while some people think this will be his last hike, Eberhart seems to strongly disagree.
【1】What set Eberhart apart from other Appalachian Trail hikers?
A.The maximum age.
B.The longest distance.
C.The minimum time.
D.The steepest trail.
【2】Which word best describes Eberhart’s journey on the Appalachian Trail?
A.Relaxing.
B.Challenging.

D.Appealing.
【3】Why did Eberhart hike the trails in random sections?
A.To conserve his energy.
B.To catch up with other hikers.
C.To make use of good weather.
D.To avoid getting injured.
【4】What can we learn from Eberhart’s success?
A.Life lies in movement.
B.All roads lead to Rome.
C.He who laughs last laughs longest.
D.It’s never too late to go after dreams.

24、Chokwe Selassie, aged 13, is working hard to help drivers avoid potholes(坑洼). The eighth-grader was inspired to kick off his creation on a recent morning, when his mother was driving him to school. Their car was damaged as it went over a huge pothole in the middle of the street in their hometown of Jackson, Mississippi. He decided to do something about the pothole problem in his city.
Chokwe developed the app with his friends Rodriguez Ratliff and Emmanuel Brooks. When the app detects a pothole, it is highlighted in red. And if you get close to the pothole, your phone will warn you with a beep. Drivers can also use the app to report any potholes and look for other routes they can take to avoid roads that have them.
The app relies on current available information about the streets of Jackson, already stored in a database of the city’s 311 call system. Through the call system, citizens dial 3-1-1 to report non-emergency problems which include potholes. Chokwe and his friends determined that focusing on the 10 busiest streets in Jackson would give them a large enough sample size to test the prototype.
While developing the app, the boys took part in a Minority Male Makers Program sponsored by Verizon and held at Jackson State University. They learned 3D printing and design, and how to create apps. Through the program Chokwe and his friends received encouragement and guidance.
Although the app isn’t yet available for sale, Chokwe is already looking for ways to improve the app. He hopes to add more to it until it spreads all over the country.

A. By replying to citizens’ calls.
B. By broadcasting traffic accidents.
C. By settling non- emergency problems.
D. By using its information about potholes.
【4】Which can be Chokwe’s future target?
