二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   For many, finding an unattended wallet filled with 400 in cash would be a source of temptation (诱惑). But the urge would no doubt be greater if you were living on the streets with little food and money. All of this makes the actions of the homeless Tom Smith even more remarkable.

After spotting a wallet on the front seat inside a parked car with its window down, he stood guard in the rain for about two hours waiting for the owner to return.

After hours in the cold and wet, he reached inside and pulled the wallet out hoping to find some ID so he could contact the driver, only to discover it contained 400 in notes, with another 50 in spare change beside it.

He then took the wallet to a nearby police station. When the car’s owner John Anderson and his colleague Carol Lawrence returned to the ear, they were shocked to find two policemen standing next to it. The policemen told them what Mr. Smith did and that the wallet was safe.

The pair were later able to thank Mr. Smith for his kindness.

Mr. Anderson said: “I couldn’t believe that the guy never took a penny. To think he is sleeping on the streets tonight when he could have stolen the money and paid for a place to stay in. This guy has nothing and yet he didn’t take the wallet for himself; he thought about others instead. It’s unbelievable. It just proves there are honest guys out there.”

Mr. Smith’s act drew much of the public’s attention and won praise from social media users after Mr. Anderson posted the story on Facebook.

Now Mr. Anderson has set up an online campaign to raise money for Mr. Smith and other homeless people in the area, which by yesterday had received 8,000. “People have been approaching him in the street; he’s had job offers and all sorts,” Mr. Anderson commented.

1Which of the following can we learn from the passage?

A.There was E400 in total in the unattended wallet.

B.The police found the owner of the wallet through an ID card.

C.John and his colleague thanked Tom Smith later face to face.

D.Tom Smith might later get a job offered by kind people.

A.sometimes he didn’t have faith in others

B.Tom Smith took some pennies from the wallet

D.Social media played a major role in helping the homeless.

  • 22、   There are around 100 tribes that live in global isolation, mostly in South America and India.

The Sentinelese(250 people)have lived on one of the Andaman Islands in Eastern India for 60, 000 years. They protect their island by fighting against people from outside. Their language is different from any other known language.

Another Andaman tribe is the Jarawa(300 people). In the past, they were independent and fought against anybody trying to make contact with them. But in 1998, the Indian govemment built a road across their land, and since then, they’ve had more contact with the outside world.

Some Amazon tribes avoid contact because of unhappy memories. The Mashco—Piro left their vegetable gardens after rubber companies killed most of their tribe at the beginning of the 20th century. Those who survived became nomadic(游牧的)and started hunting animals in the forest.

The Awa live in the Amazon forests of Brazil. Out of 350 members, 100 have no contact with the outside world. They left their villages and adopted a nomadic lifestyle around 1850 to escape attacks by Europeans. In the following years, farmers in nearby communities started cutting the trees to expand their farmland. The Awa lost most of their hunting land.

The few Amazon tribes that still exist are fighting to keep their traditional way of life.

Survival, an organization that fights for the rights of tribal people, says that uncontacted tribes are the most vulnerable(弱势的)humans on the planet and that’s why their environment should be unavailable to the rest of us.

After years of pressure, the organization got Brazil’s government to clear invaders from the Awa land. All non-Awa people are leaving so the tribe can get their forest back. But some think it’s impossible for tribes to stay isolated forever in a connected world. Contact will be made one day. So the question is:Whose choice should it be, ours or theirs?

【1】What could be learnt about the Sentinelese from the text?

A.They speak the same language as the Jarawa.

B.They resist contact from the outside world.

C.There are about 350 members in their tribe.

D.They received help from the Indian government.

【2】Why did the Awa adopt a nomadic lifestyle?

A.To avoid being attacked by Europeans.

B.To avoid being robbed by rubber companies.

    C.To protect their hunting land.

D.To maintain their traditional way of life.

【3】What is Survival’s view of the tribal people?

A.They should fight for their rights by themselves.

B.We should show them respect and not disturb them.

C.It’s impossible to stay isolated from the outside world.

D.We should help them get used to the connected world.

【4】How does the author describe the isolated tribes?

    A.Doubtfully.

    B.Critically.

    C.Indifferently.

    D.Objectively.

  • 23、   The world’s first telephone call — “Mr. Watson, come here, I want to see you” — was a request for a face-to-face meeting. In Brantford, the “Telephone City”, there’s a giant memorial to Alexander Graham Bell that includes a bronze casting with figures meant to represent Knowledge, Joy and Sorrow — the information spread by the telephone.

Today maybe we should have a bit of sorrow for the weakening of the personal connections developed by Bell’s great invention. We own more “phones” than ever, but we don’t use them primarily for voice calls. In 2010 Americans spent 2.24 trillion minutes talking on their mobile devices — which averages out to 7, 813 minutes per mobile line. By 2017 that had dropped to just 5, 539 minutes per line. That’s still 18 minutes per person per day, but it’s a small part of the five hours a day we spend doing other things on our phones: watching videos, browsing Twitter and Facebook, sending text messages, — and all the rest.

So what leads to the fall-off in voice communication? One is digital data. We consumed 28.6 trillion megabytes of data on our phones in 2018, a dramatic 82 percent increase over 2017 levels. The other is robocalls (机器人电话) . YouMail, which makes a robocall-blocking app, says that 4.7 billion calls were placed to U.S. phone numbers in July 2019 alone. My own phone shows that I got 36 robocalls that month — so many that I’ve ignored all strange calls.

Then, what’s lost when texts and posts replace conversation? Briefly put, it is Joy and Sorrow: the emotional content conveyed by the human voice. Without this real-time engagement, we’re left only with Knowledge, which, as the past few years have shown, is so easily misrepresented. Our telephones may have evolved into machines for 24/7 tweeting and texting, but we’re more alone than ever.

【1】Why does the author mention Alexander Graham Bell in paragraph 1?

A.To attract the readers to the topic.

B.To introduce the city of Brantford.

C.To emphasize the contribution of Bell.

D.To show the importance of the first call.

【2】What is the reason for the fall of telephone communication?

    A.The application of YouMail.

B.The ignorance of all the calls.

C.The breakdown of the telephone system.

D.The increasing consumption of digital data.

【3】How does the author mainly support the theme of the passage?

    A.By giving examples.

    B.By quoting others’ words.

    C.By providing statistical data.

    D.By providing research results.

【4】Which of the following can serve as the best title?

    A.The Evolution of Telephones

    B.The Emotion Conveyed by Telephones

C.The Fall-off of Talking on the Phone

    D.The Weakening of Personal Communication

  • 24、   Close to the North Pole, remote and rocky Plateau Mountain in the Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard seems an unlikely spot for any global effort to safeguard agriculture. In this cold and deserted environment, no grains, no gardens, no trees can grow. Yet at the end of a 130-meter-long tunnel cut out of solid stone is a room filled with humanity’s most precious treasure, the largest and most diverse seed collection—more than a half-billion seeds.

A quiet rescue mission is under way. With growing evidence that unchecked climate change will seriously affect food production and threaten the diversity of crops around the world, the Svalbard Global Seed Vault represents a major step towards ensuring the preservation of hundreds of thousands of crop varieties. This is a seed collection, but more importantly, it is a collection of the traits found within the seeds: the genes that give one variety resistance to a particular pest and another variety tolerance for hot, dry weather.

Few people will ever see or come into contact with the contents of this vault. In sealed boxes, behind multiple locked doors, monitored by electronic security systems, enveloped in below-zero temperatures, and surrounded by tons of rock, hundreds of millions of seeds are protected in their mountain fortress. Frozen in such conditions inside the mountain, seeds of most major crops will remain viable for hundreds of years, or longer. Seeds of some are capable of retaining their ability to grow for thousands of years.

Everyone can look back now and say that the Seed Vault was a good and obvious idea, and that of course the Norwegian government should have approved and funded it. But back in 2004, when the Seed Vault was proposed, it was viewed as a crazy, impractical, and expensive idea.

We knew that nothing would provide a definite guarantee. But we were tired, fed up, and frankly scared of the steady, greater losses of crop diversity. The Seed Vault was built by optimists who wanted to do something to preserve options so that humanity and its crops might be better prepared for change. If it simply resupplied seed gene banks with samples those gene banks had lost, this would repay our efforts.

The Seed Vault is about hope and commitment——about what can be done if countries come together and work cooperatively to accomplish something significant, long-lasting, and worthy of who we are and wish to be.

【1】What is the Seed Vault according to the passage?

A.It’s a tunnel where the collected seeds are displayed.

B.It’s a stone room that contains the seeds of endangered crops.

C.It’s a seed gene bank that stores diverse seeds for future agriculture.

D.It’s a lab where researchers study how to maintain the diversity of crops.

【2】What does the underlined word “viable” in Paragraph 3 probably means?

    A.Mature.

    B.Alive.

    C.Clean.

    D.Valuable.

【3】What does Paragraph 3 mainly tells us?

    A.How the seeds are preserved.

    B.Where people keep the seeds.

    C.Why the seeds are protected.

D.What people do to study the seeds.

【4】We can know from the passage that ________.

A.the Seed Vault offers a solution to climate change.

B.most countries took part in rescuing the seed varieties.

C.the Seed Vault guarantees to prevent the loss of crop diversity.

D.many people originally considered building the Seed Vault unwise.
