二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Ostara, upon which Easter is based, is the Pagan celebration of the vernal equinox (春分).

The holiday is named after Eostre, a spring goddess of the Germanic tradition. There isn’t much written record of Eostre, and it is thought she was worshiped by tribes who used oral tradition rather than written words to record history. Eostre was a symbol of fertility—she may have been the original source of the association of eggs with springtime celebrations. She may also be responsible for the Easter rabbit—the spring equinox was a time when hares would come out and mate. A female hare can even conceive (受孕) while pregnant with another one—this remarkable fertility became a symbol of the season. Therefore, we get “Eostre rabbits” in the spring.

Growth and awakening are important parts of Ostara celebrations. Because the day marks the coming of the planting season, modern Pagans store seeds to later transfer outdoors after frost has disappeared. Caring for the seedling is like worshiping the goddess. Besides, drawings replace the pretty colors of new flowers.

For Pagans, Ostara is a time for spiritual awakening and rebirth. Walking meditation is a common practice and special attention is paid to the signs of nature coming back to life. New beginnings are coming, and there is much soul-searching and clearing away negative energy. This spiritual cleaning is also reflected in the practice of spring cleaning.

Whether you’re Pagan or not, you might have noticed many of your own springtime celebrations in Ostara celebrations, and there’s a reason why Pagan customs have been practiced pretty much in the same way because so much of it is simply human nature. Who could resist a springtime walk in a forest? Is there anyone who isn’t inspired by nature’s annual new beginning? So whatever your own tradition, honor the season with a spiritual cleaning and rebirth—to make room for beautiful things to come.

【1】What can be inferred from the passage?

A.Ostara has a longer history than Easter.

    B.Only Pagan celebrate Ostara nowadays.

C.Ostara is a celebration intended for females.

D.Most Ostara celebrations are not held outdoors.

【2】What do you think is not an important part of Ostara celebrations according to the passage?

    A.Growth.

    B.Drawings.

    C.Flowers.

    D.Spiritual awakening.

【3】What is the similarity between walking meditation and spring cleaning?

A.They can help to clean people’s spirit.

B.They are in need of some special attention.

C.It is common to hold the activities worldwide.

D.Written record of them is not talked about a lot.

【4】Why do our own springtime celebrations have so much in common with many Ostara celebrations?

A.They have the same origin and history.

B.It is human nature to pursue beautiful things.

C.Pagan customs have been spread to the world.

D.Pagans are good at learning from other cultures.

  • 23、A new keyboard can tell whether you are its owner. The keyboard records information about the typing pattern and sends it to a computer program. The program then checks to see if the pattern matches the right user. If not, an alarm sounds, and the computer locks the typist out. It locks out anyone else, even if the person knows password. What’s more, this device needs no batteries. It harvests all the energy it needs from the action of your typing. Besides, the keyboard is also self-cleaning and the keys are free of damage from water, oil and dirt.

The keys of the new keyboard are made of the same inexpensive plastic that might be found on any other standard keyboard. But instead of being smooth, the keys have millions of tiny plastic nanowires(纳米线)on their surface area to every key, increasing the effective contact area between the plastics and fingers. This ensures that there's enough power to run the keyboard as someone types.

Liming Dai, a scientist, did not work on the new keyboard, but he thinks the design could be important in getting better performance from a variety of devices. “It could also be applied to a touch screen, for instance,” Dai says. “Then smart phones and notepads could harvest energy from the action of someone typing or drawing.”

“Future work might make the keyboard even more useful,” Dai adds. “A later design might build tiny capacitors(电容器)onto the nanowires,” he suggests. Capacitors are little devices that temporarily store electric charges. Those might then LEDs to light a Keyboard in the dark.

Zhonglin Wang is a co-designer of the new keyboard. His team has built a working model of the keyboard. “If a company decides to fund(投资)its production, this keyboard could be in stores in as little as two years,” says Wang.

1How does the new keyboard tell whether you are its owner?

    A. By matching the typing pattern to the right user.

    B. By sending alarms to a computer program.

    C. By checking the right user's passwords.

    D. By recording information about the typing pattern.

2Why are there many nanowires on the surface of the keys?

    A. To increase the effective contact area.

    B. To improve the speed of typing.

    C. To make the keys smooth.

    D. To help produce power.

3What’s Dai’s attitude to the new keyboard?

    A. Unconcerned.   B. Doubtful.

    C. Positive.   D. Critical.

4What is the best title for the text?

    A. A New Keyboard Made of Nanowires

    B. A New Keyboard Entirely Owned by you

    C. A New Keyboard’s Future

    D. A New Keyboard Powered by Typing

  • 24、   You know those nutrition guidelines the government issues every few years? It turns out that following them isn't just good for your health. It's good for the planet, too.

“What we found is that impacts vary across nations, but in the highimpact nations, in general, you can see that, if you follow a nationally recommended diet, despite the fact that these diets don't mention explicitly—or most of them don't explicitly mention—environmental impacts, that you are going to have lower environmental impacts due to that. So that's sort of fairly clear across all the highincome nations.” said Paul Behrens, an environmental scientist at Leiden University in the Netherlands.

The food we eat takes a big toll on the environment. A third of the icefree land on Earth is used for agriculture, and according to some estimates, producing food accounts for roughly a fifth of all humancaused greenhouse gas emissions. Fertilizer runoff also leads to other problems, like the algae blooms in Lake Eerie and the Dead Zone in the Gulf of Mexico.

However, following dietary guidelines would reduce those impacts, especially in wealthy countries like the US. “Most of the reductions come from meat and dairy” which have an outsized impact on land use and pollution, and are a major source of greenhouse gases.(That's partly due to cow farts. Seriously.) Following the suggestions would also mean eating fewer calories, since many people here eat more than they need.

Overall, in highincome countries, Behren's team estimates that following the rules could result in as much as a 17 percent reduction in land use, a 21 percent reduction in nutrient pollution, and a 25 percent drop in agricultural greenhouse gas emissions. Cutting down on how much food we waste—which is roughly a third in the US—could help even more. The results are in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Of course, people are notoriously bad at following diets. But: “These nationally recommended guidelines do actually have a knockon effect on other areas of policy making. So if I'm developing a new healthyeatingforschools program then that's going to be based off a lot of detail that I get from the nationally recommended guidelines. So while it might not necessarily be the case that people follow directly …  they actually are quite influential on the preparation of other advice.”

It seems that a smaller environmental footprint and a healthier lifestyle could go hand in hand.

1Which of the following statement will Paul Behrens approve of?

    A. Following a nationally recommended diet can have similar impacts in different countries.

    B. Following a nationally recommended diet can do good to our health.

    C. Not all the countries have recommended diets in an explicit manner.

    D. Some highincome nations don't mention the diet explicitly for its impacts can be ignored.

2What do the underlined words “takes a big toll on” in paragraph 3 probably mean?

    A. shows signs of B. has a bad effect on

    C. takes full advantage of D. makes up for

3Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

    A. Food production can lead to about 20 percent of humancaused greenhouse gas with only a third of the icefree land used.

    B. It is estimated that following dietary guidelines can lead to decrease in more land use than in nutrient pollution.

    C. Paul Behrens' new program concerning healthy eating for schools is likely to be based on national nutrition guidelines.

    D. Some wealthy countries tend to reduce meat and dairy though the other areas of policy making isn't effected much.
