二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Using natural and organic products for skincare is increasingly popular-and that includes suncream. Many websites, including Pinterest and Instagram, feature users' recipes for homemade suncream. Judging from the comment, the rise in interest for homemade suncream is because some people fear the chemicals in shop-bought suncream and believe that natural products mixed at home will be better at protecting them from the sun's harmful rays. The fear originates from recent news that some suncream elements seem to disturb hormones (荷尔蒙).

Many of the homemade suncream recipes contain elements like shea butter and cocoa butter as well as coconut and vitamin E oils. The sun protection factor (SPF) values for these elements, according to the authors of these recipes, are between four and six. These SPF values, if true, are not enough to protect the skin against the harmful effects of sunlight. Some recipes include carrot seed essential oil, which the authors claim to have an SPF of 35-40. But this is unlikely, given the small amount used in these recipes. The European Commission recommended SPF factor for moderate skin protection is 15-29 (and 30-50+ for high protection).

The sun's most harmful rays are ultraviolet (UV) radiation-notably UVB and UVA radiation. UVB has a shorter wavelength and doesn't go far into the skin, but it is very dangerous as it can change the DNA in skin cells and cause skin cancer. UVA has a longer wave- length and can go much deeper into the skin. UVA can cause harmful reactive oxygen molecules (分子)called “free radicals” to form. These molecules can damage fat, protein and DNA in the skin, thereby weakening the normal function of skin cells.

Shop-bought suncream contains approved UV-blocking molecules that block UVA and UVB rays. Zinc oxide (氧化锌)is one of these UV-blocking materials. It has been extensively tested to determine the most effective size for blocking harmful rays. It is not clear whether the zinc oxide powder recommended for the homemade recipes meets with the recommended size or proportion needed.

1What may concern consumers of the shop-bought suncream?

A.The price of it. B.The hormones in it.

C.The chemicals in it. D.The production process of it.

2What are SPF values used for?

A.Measuring the amount of chemicals in suncream.

B.Measuring the harm suncream do to people.

C.Measuring the hormone level of suncream.

D.Measuring the protective effect of suncream.

3What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?

    A.How sun protection products work.

B.What harm the sun's rays bring to skin.

C.How the sun's most harmful rays form.

D.How UVB and UVA radiation can be blocked.

4What can be inferred from the last paragraph?

    A.Shop-bought suncream needs more tests.

B.More zinc oxide powder is beneficial to skin.

C.Shop-bought suncream is more suitable for people.

D.More chemicals will be added into shop-bought suncream.

  • 22、   Scientists say they have developed a system that uses machine learning to predict when and where lightning will strike. Researchers report the system is able to predict lightning strikes up to 30 minutes before they happen within a 30-kilometer area.

Lightning is a strong burst of electricity in the atmosphere. Since it carries an extremely powerful electrical charge, it can be destructive and deadly. European researchers have estimated that between 6,000 and 24,000 people are killed by lightning worldwide each year. For this reason, climate scientists have long sought to develop methods to predict lightning.

The system tested in the experiments uses a combination of data from weather stations and machine learning methods. The researchers developed a prediction model that was trained to recognize weather conditions that were likely to cause lightning.

The model was created with data collected over a 12-year period from 12 Swiss weather stations in cities and mountain areas. The data, related to four main surface conditions: air pressure, air temperature, relative humidity and wind speed, was placed into a unique machine learning algorithm (算法), which compared it to records of lightning strikes. Researchers say the algorithm was then able to learn the conditions under which lightning happens.

The researchers test-ran the system several times. They found that the system made predictions that proved correct almost 80 percent of the time. “It can now be used anywhere,” the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology said in a statement.

The researchers plan to keep developing the technology in partnership with a European effort that aims to create a lightning protection program. The effort is called the European Laser Lightning Rod project. Scientists working on the project are experimenting with a laser technology that could someday control lightning activity, transferring lightning charges from clouds to the ground. They hope that such technology can one day be used as protection against lightning strikes. Possible uses could be at stations, airports or places where large crowds gather.

    1Why was the system developed?

A.To meet kids’ curiosity about lightning.

B.To show the power of lightning.

C.To keep track of lightning deaths.

    D.To protect people from lightning.

2What is special about the system?

A.It was based on a number of samples worldwide.

B.It adopted a different machine learning algorithm.

C.It used an effective method of collecting data.

D.It required low cost of predicting lightning.

3What will the researchers do next with the laser technology?

A.Monitor lightning activity. B.Prevent the occurrence of lightning.

C.Direct energy from lightning. D.Generate electricity with lightning.

4What can be a suitable title for the text?

A.A System of Controlling Lightning B.A Method of Forecasting Lightning

C.A Theory of Employing Lightning D.A Model of Creating Lightning

  • 23、Most parents will tell you that travelling internationally with kids is no day at the beach.

“For families with young children, spending a long period of time in an airport terminal can be a kind of pain, partly because of all the waiting around but also because the airport is just a stop — usually the first stop — in a long journey,” said Suzanne Rowan Kelleher, a family travel expert and managing editor of MiniTime.cn.

But a new beach-themed play area for children in the international terminal at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) gives kids a chance to have some fun and burn off some of their energy before they get on a flight.

First opening on Thursday, in the new Tom Bradley International Terminal with a party featuring the LAX therapy dogs, some gift bags and cupcakes, the 971-square-foot, post-security play area is titled “LAX Beach.” Open to kids aged 2 to 8, the play space has soft, sculpted foam pieces that resemble waves, surfboards, beach toys and dolphins and is keeping in with the terminal’s overall architectural theme, which was inspired by the Pacific Ocean to the west of the airport.

“I think it is safe to say that happy children make better flights,” said Los Angeles World Airports Executive Director Gina Marie Lindsey. “And with the opening of LAX Beach, we are going to see a lot more happy children on our international flights.”

There are likely going to be a lot more happy adults seated around those children on international flights as well with LAX Beach appearing in the international terminal.

The play space — the first children’s play area in any LAX terminal — was built for the Los Angeles World Airports by terminal management company Westfield for $350,000. In addition to the beach-themed foam pieces, there’s a slide, an interactive light table and lifesavers for children to crawl through.

The nearby seating overlooking the space offers a place for parents to relax and keep an eye on their kids.

“Having a kid-centric place where kids can work off a bit of energy can be a real lifesaver,” said Rowan Kelleher. “The beach theme attempts to offer a sense of place, too, which is nice.”

【1】What can be inferred from the passage?

A.Most parents with their children around prefer to travel by air.

B.Children who play in LAX Beach always sleep in the plane.

C.Usually parents waiting in an airport with kids can’t feel relaxed.

D.Parents with kids can’t enjoy the time on the beach any more.

【2】What do you know about LAX Beach?

【3】We can infer from the passage that LAX ________.

A.will build more similar theme beaches.

    B.expects to attract more passengers.

C.will open to people living in the city.

D.does a favor to parents with kids there.

【4】Why did the airport design and construct a beach-themed play space?

A.To help parents with kid have enjoyable flights.

B.To help make children more energetic.

C.To offer little kids a place to rest well.

D.To offers parents a place to play with kids.

【5】What’s the main idea of the passage?

A.LAX Beach changed the style of Los Angeles airport.

B.Los Angeles airport gets beach-themed kids’ play area.

C.Los Angeles airport will provide LAX Beach for kids for free.

D.LAX Beach is the most popular place for kids in Los Angeles.

  • 24、When restaurants first shut down early in the pandemic, Americans raided grocery stores. They started cooking more at home — and, probably, producing more leftovers. Those leftovers can be a convenient future meal — but they’ve got a dark side, too.

“There’s a tendency that if you put an item on a plate that’s a leftover, there’s a higher probability that you’re not going to fully consume that item. And so it’s probably going to waste.”

With his colleagues, Brian Roe, an applied economist at the Ohio State University, recently studied leftovers and food waste by tracking the eating habits of 18 men and women in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The participants tracked what they ate using an iPhone app. And during the week-long study, the study subjects totally piled 1,200 different foods on their plates.

After analyzing what got eaten, saved or thrown away, the researchers found that leftovers were more likely to be picked at and not fully eaten — a finding we can all probably identify with.

But they also observed that leftovers — perhaps due to being older and less fresh — directed diners’ attention to the other, more novel items on their plate, which brings up an interesting possible strategy to get people to eat their veggies.

“I guess if you have an item that you don’t eat normally and you’re trying to get people to eat it, perhaps surrounding it with leftovers is a way to make them focus on the newest item on the plate.”

Overall, Roe says one bigger lesson appeared on how to avoid throwing food into the dustbin.

“For us, the real take-home here was: all else equal, choose a smaller meal, and you’re less likely to generate leftovers. And that’s a good thing because leftovers, all else equal, tend to be wasted more often.

“I’m guilty of this myself: we have things left over from last Thanksgiving still sitting in our freezer. And I know people who’ve moved with frozen items before — without ever getting around to eating them.”

【1】What’s the disadvantage of the leftovers?

    A.Leading to bad habits.

    B.Tendency towards waste.

    C.Lack of deliciousness.

    D.Causing a feeling of guilt.

【2】What is Roe’s suggestion for people to avoid leftovers?

    A.Trying to cook less generally.

B.Putting the food in the fridge.

    C.Cooking more vegetables.

D.Dining with a phone in hand.

【3】Why did Roe feel guilty of himself?

    A.He moved with frozen food.

B.He threw leftovers in the dustbin.

    C.He had some leftovers uneaten.

    D.He always cooked more dishes.

【4】What is the text mainly about?

A.Americans cooked more in the pandemic.

B.More researches should be done on waste.

C.Good eating habits can make you healthy.

    D.Leftovers are actually a food-waste problem.
