21、The Roman Colosseum( 罗马圆形大剧场), built around two thousand years ago, survived a 14th century earthquake and most of the 150-some foot high building is still standing. It has seen the rise and fall of enormous structures as well as the Roman Empire. Why could the ancient structure stand the test of time while many modern constructions fall apart after a few decades? Scientists believe the ancient Romans used a specific concrete which may account for its super-long existence.
Previous discoveries have confirmed the components of the Roman concrete: volcanic material, limestone (石灰石) and water. Architects suppose the volcanic material is what makes the building strong—which it does. But this is not enough to explain the architecture’s durability. A team of researchers recently discovered a magical power of the Roman concrete: self-healing. And the key actually lies in the tiny pieces of limestone. Worth mentioning is that researchers had taken them as impurities (杂质) due to the limitation of ancient technology. But it turned out that ancient Romans seemed to have discovered the secret.
When the Romans made the mixture, they heated up the limestone to turn it into quicklime, a very reactive chemical. Quicklime reacted with water and produced heat that set up a chemical foundation to strengthen the building material. Meanwhile, it would “wear” a hard “shell”, forming limestone pieces. It was these pieces that stopped the cracks (裂缝) from becoming bigger. When there was rain, the pieces reacted with water again, quickly filling the cracks.
For material scientist Ainissa Ramirez, this new understanding of ancient Roman concrete is a welcome discovery. “This is one way that the material can be greener,” says Ramirez, “The Romans made the material. We had to kind of figure out how they did it so that we can make better materials—and then, you know, in turn, be better guards of our environment.”

22、 Franklin K. Matthiews, a librarian, went on a nationwide tour to advocate better standards for children’s literature. That was in the early 20th century. Relatively few kids’ books were published at that time. That was partly because printing color illustrations was expensive. Matthiews was a firm believer in the importance of children’s literacy. His advocacy ended with creation of Children’s Book Week, an annual celebration of books for little ones.
In honor of its 100th anniversary, the Library of Congress digitized a collection of dozens of children’s books published prior to 1924. Some of the newly digitized stories are classics that will likely be familiar to modern readers. The oldest book in the digital collection is A Little Pretty Pocket Book, considered to be the first book written specifically for children, which was originally published in 1744 by John Newbery.
“Well into the 19th century, most of children’s literature in America came from Britain,” Jacqueline Coleburn, a worker at the Library of Congress said. “It wasn’t till the 1830s and 1840s that we really focused on producing American books.”
When they did take off in the US, the reading material was often filled with imagination and originality just like the books read today. An 1863 copy ox Red Riding Flood was cut in the shape of a girl with animals around her feet. The Slant Book was published in 1910, following a little boy and in the shape of a parallelogram to convey the boy’s race down.
The collection highlights the joyful commonalities between children past and present. Kids today will surely get a kick out of some images. But the books can at times be out of syne with modern feelings. They aren’t diverse, and sometimes express problematic opinions of gender.
“We’re celebrating the fact that these books provide us with the opportunity to have conversations about what is appropriate or inappropriate. They are historical documents which reflect the attitudes, viewpoints and beliefs of various ages.” says Lee Ann Potter at the Library of Congress.

23、 Last night one of our 3 family dogs was hit and killed by a car in front of my mother’s house. The dogs became more or less, my mother’s children after her human children grew up and moved out and my father ran with a midlife crisis and left her. The one that was killed had bonded with my mom far more than the others. She is shocked and upset. I loved the dog, but my true sadness currently results from having to watch my mother experience another tragedy after everything she has been through in her life.
In the midst of all of this I have to sincerely applaud the driver of the vehicle, which feels wrong, but it's not.
I’ll start by stating it was not his fault. The dog chased(追赶) a deer into the road at night. In an effort to not hit the deer with his car he changed direction suddenly, not seeing the dog, leading to her deaths. He could have very easily continued on his way, but he did something that I hope I never forget. He did the right thing (in my eyes). The driver pulled over, carefully wrapped our dog in a blanket he got from his car, and carried her up to my mother's front door.
He was visibly shaking and very upset. He informed my mother of what happened and she broke down immediately. He consoled her the best a stranger could and waited with her while my sister rushed to her house. He left his information and offered assistance in anyway he could.
Yes, he is the man who hit and killed our dog-accidentally. What he really did was sparing my mother from discovering unexpectedly a horrible scene herself while searching for the dog. He had so many choices. Choices that were far easier than what he chose. He did the right thing and for that, thank you, stranger. You recovered my faith in humanity.
【1】What can we learn about the author's mother?
A.She has suffered a lot in her life. B.She has grown up with her dogs.
C.She misses her husband very much. D.She has three dogs killed in an accident.
【2】What's the author s attitude towards the dog-killer?
A.Doubtful. B.Indifferent. C.Critical. D.Praising.
【3】What does the underlined word “consoled” in paragraph 4 mean?
A.Encouraged. B.Followed. C.Comforted. D.Helped.
【4】What is the best tide for the text?
A.An Unfortunate Accident B.Sadness over a Dog’s Death
C.An Easy-to-Make Choice D.Faith in Humanity Recovered
24、 Our suits have four layers: thermal underwear on the inside, followed by an electrically heated bodysuit, a thick wool coat, and a half-inch-thick layer of rubber outerwear. There're two layers of hoods, waterproof gloves and 35 pounds of weights. There are two batteries for the heated bodysuit, a backup gas container, and finally, my photography equipment. We look like astronauts minus the helmets.
When we finally dive into the freezing water, we're wearing 200 pounds each. The cold quickly numbs the few square inches of exposed skin on our cheeks, and as the dive goes on, it spreads into our suits and gloves, biting even harder. It’ s almost unbearable. Toward the end, as we're pausing on our way up to let the pressure drop, we search for anything to distract us from the pain. When we finally drag ourselves out of the freezing ocean, I lie face down on the ice, my brain dulled, my skin hard and wrinkled, my lips, hands, and feet swollen and unconscious—then, as my body warms and the blood starts to flow (again), the intense pain is at its worst.
What could possibly make this worthwhile? The sight! Only a few species of seals, penguins, and other birds live in East Antarctica, and no land mammals at all. Below, it’s a rich garden. Antarctic marine life has been largely isolated from the rest of the planet for millions of years, ever since the continent separated from the other continents and froze over. Since then the powerful Antarctic Circumpolar Current has surrounded Antarctica from west to east, creating a sharp change in temperature that prevents the spread of marine animals. The long isolation has allowed a surprising diversity of species, unique to the region, to evolve on the seafloor.
The waters under Antarctic ice are like Mount Qomolangma: magical, but extremely unfriendly. Nothing short of full commitment gets you anywhere. The demand is too great. But that's what makes the images you see here so breathtaking, and the experience of having photographed them and of having seen this place so unforgettable.

【4】What makes the diving experience in Antarctica so worthwhile?
A.The amazing scenery and pictures taken.

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
One New Year’s morning, as we came down to breakfast, with very shiny faces and spendy aprons(围裙), we surprisingly found father alone in the dining room.
“Happy New Year. Papa! Where is Mother?” we cried.
“A little boy came begging and said they were starving at home. so your mother went to see and ah, here she is.”
As Papa spoke, in came Mamma, looking very cold, rather sad, and very much excited. Not far away from here, lies a poor woman with a little newborn baby. Six children are hud-dled(挤在一起)into one bed to keep from freezing for they have no fire. There is nothing to eat over there, and the oldest boy came here to tell me they were starving on this bitterly cold day. “My little girls, will you givc them your breakfast, as a New Year’s gift?”
We sat silent a minute and looked at the nice, hot porridge(粥), creamy milk, and good bread and butter; for we were brought up like English children, and never drank tea or coffee, or ate anything but porridge for our breakfast.
“I wish we’d eaten it up,” thought I for I was rather a selfish child, and very hungry.
“May I go and help carry it to the poor, little children?” asked Beth, who had the tende-rest heart that ever beat under a spendy apron.
“1 can carry that little pot,” said little May, proudly giving the thing she loved best.
“And I shall take all the porridge,” I burst in, heartily ashamed of my first feeling.
“You shall put on your things and help me, and when we come back, we’ll get something to eat,” said Mother, beginning to pile the bread and butter into a big basket.
