  • 21、   Esports (electronic sports) are organized competitions where players — often referred to as “athletes” — face off against each other in video games. They are not just games in a sense. Actually, they are a sport that can improve the players’ thinking ability, hand-eye coordination, willpower and team spirit.

The esports industry has experienced significant growth in recent years around the world, though it’s still in the nascent stage, which means it has huge growth potential going forward.

While the assumption is that esports are only a recent phenomenon, in reality the first esports-like event was held back in 1972, when some Stanford University students competed against one another in the game Spacewar. The prize? A year-long subscription to Rolling Stone magazine.

The ’80s saw the first true videogame tournament, with over 10,000 players gathering for the Space Invaders Championship. However, most of the period saw that players focused on beating each other’s highest scores rather than competing in organized tournaments.

As gaming became more popular, the ’90s became the first decade when esports (a term which wasn’t yet coined) began to really take off, with companies such as Nintendo and Sega holding professional gaming tournaments. This is also when we began to see money becoming a factor in professional gaming. But it is the 1997 Red Annihilation Quake tournament that is considered the world’s first real esports event. Only a few weeks later, the Cyberathlete Professional League was formed — an organization which is considered a pioneer of esports.

Due to the normalization of gaming and the Internet (along with technological advances), the real surge ( 激增 ) of esports came in the recent decade. It was then that we began seeing what we now know to be modern-day esports. As streaming platforms such as YouTube took off, people began to show interest in not only playing videogames but watching them too. Popular tournaments now sell out stadiums and professional players can earn millions from prize money, advertising and salaries.

  • 22、For as long as I can remember, my body and I have shared a relationship of discontent. Growing up, I was skinnier than the other kids and at five I was told I wasn't attractive and that I must put on some weight. But no matter how much I ate, I stayed thin for years until adolescence. Then I started putting on weight almost immediately. I remember feeling happy as I began to fill out. However, my joy didn't last long.

I was thirteen when I was first called fat. Friends and neighbours would make jokes on my big size. As I entered my late teens, I had completely lost confidence in my body and, subsequently, in myself. Having failed to live up to conventional beauty standards, I was convinced that if I wanted to be loved, I needed to offer more, doing anything to please everyone around.

I entered adulthood thinking I wasn't “enough”—an idea that was seeded not only by the fact that “skinny” is celebrated, but also by the language associated with accounts of losing weight—selfimprovement, discipline—all virtues. Being fat quickly categorizes you as lazy and undisciplined. Consumed by thoughts of the way my body looked, I didn't notice the other ways my body needed attention. I failed to realize, for example, that my period was much heavier and more painful than ever before. Actually I developed a rare disease and later I had two surgeries.

I was always made to feel that my weight was the root of a lot of problems in my life; I have learnt this is not true. After a lot of selfreflection and some professional help, I realized I never learnt to like myself. While two decades of selfhatred cannot be undone overnight, I have taken first steps to acceptance.

I am now much lighter than before, in body and mind. There are days I find voices on social media saying I am too fat to be loved or to be worthy, but I am learning not to focus on that thought for long. As long as I like myself, just the way I am, opinions at the end of the day are just water off a duck's back.

【1】What can we learn about the author from the first two paragraphs?

A.She could change her weight at will.

B.She had different beauty standards from others.

C.She tried to love others to build her confidence.

D.She was greatly influenced by others' opinions.

【2】Why did the author think she wasn't “enough”?

    A.She was poorly disciplined.

    B.She failed to celebrate “skinny”.

C.She was labelled as lazy for her weight.

D.She put on more weight after entering adulthood.

【3】What caused the author to make a change?

    A.Her lighter body.

    B.A troublesome illness.

    C.Popular beauty standards.

    D.Others' critical comments.

【4】What is the best title for the text?

    A.Beauty matters.

    B.Opinions vary.

    C.Worth your weight.

    D.Beyond your limits.

  • 23、   Sonoma County is adding artificial intelligence to its wildfire fighting. The county has entered into an agreement with the South Korean firm Alchera to equip its network of fire-spotting cameras with software that detects wildfire activity and then issues a warning to authorities.

The technology examines past and current images of terrain (地形;地势) and searches for certain changes, such as flames burning in darkness, said Chris Godley, the county’s director of emergency management. But emergency workers will first have to“teach”the system to distinguish between images that show fire smoke, and others that might show clouds, fog etc. The software will use feedback from humans to improve its algorithm(算法) and will eventually be able to detect fires on its own — or at least that’s what county officials hope.

“It’s kind of like learning how to read,” Godley said. “What letters can I put together to make up a word?” The county activated the technology Wednesday and received 16 positive reports of smoke — all of which turned out to be permitted burns, he said. Once a seasonal ban on controlled burns goes into effect in April or May, the county plans to speed up the testing and feedback phase. The hope is that by November, the system will no longer need to be taught and can start providing reliable intelligence. Godley said. “It’s going to take us a while to make sure we get the bugs out and that we really can depend on it because ultimately this is a lifesaving mission.”

The technology is intended to help officials investigate potential fire starts earlier so they can get personnel out to them more quickly and issue necessary warnings. Officials expect other places will adopt it if the technology is successful, particularly because it plugs into the camera network that’s already in place statewide.

“We ultimately believe its potential could be realized in a year or two,” Godley said. “And it could really have a dramatic impact here in California.”

【1】What does the system first have to do before being put into work?

A.Equip its network of fire-spotting cameras with software.

B.Learn to tell between images of fire smoke and other pictures.

C.Use feedbacks to improve its ability to detect fire independently.

D.Examine images of the terrain and search for any possible changes.

【2】What do local officials expect the technology to accomplish?

A.Be able to make positive reports of smoke.

B.Be able to control seasonal burns in the area.

C.Help them spot potential fire starts as soon as possible.

D.Learn how to distinguish pictures of flames from clouds.

【3】What does the underlined part in paragraph 3 mean?

    A.kill all the bugs.

    B.get rid of mistakes

    C.provide reliable information

    D.speed up testing process

【4】What does the author mainly intend to tell us?

A.AI is creating a dramatic impact in California.

B.AI is applied to monitor terrains in California.

C.A new tool to help detect wildfire in California.

D.A new way to put an end to wildfire in California.

  • 24、   There are few things in life that are more annoying: You are mid-conversation with a friend. Suddenly he bursts out laughing, making you think you’ve made a brilliant joke. But then he says: “Sorry, I wasn’t laughing at you, I just saw something really funny on micro blog.” He even begins replying to a text message or checking his e-mails.

The Guardian described the scene that a friend’s face buried in a screen “a distinct 21st-century problem”. The phenomenon even coins a new word “phubbing”, referring to the act of snubbing others in a social setting by looking at your phone instead of paying attention. According to research by advertising agency McCann in the UK, 37 percent of people feel it is worse not to answer a message than it is to “phub” your friends.

Phil Reed, a professor of psychology at Swansea University who has studied Internet addiction disorder, said many phubbers show symptoms of addiction to their mobile phone.

Like pointing or picking your nose, phubbing is widely considered rude, which can be seen from the popularity of “Stop Phubbing” campaign, which started in Australia by 23-year-old Alex Haigh who wants to shame people who snub friends and family they are with in favor of checking their mobile phone.

The campaign’s website claims that “97 percent of people claim their food tasted worse while being a victim of phubbing” and “92 percent of repeat phubbers go on to become politicians”.

According to Katy Steinmetz, reporter with Time, phubbing “has a much greater potential to hamper real-life connections by making people around us feel like we care more about posts than their presence”. She believes it is the reason why the campaign can resonate with people and is getting press around the world.

In the UK, Glamour magazine even imagined just how Jane Austen would have satirized those in need of social etiquette when it comes to using their smartphone. Or, to paraphrase the novelist, how it is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man (or woman) in possession of a good smartphone must be in want of manners.

1The example in the opening paragraph is used to show ______.

A.how people benefit from modern technology

B.how to reply text messages and e-mails properly

C.how to avoid hurting your friends’ feelings

D.how mobile phone addiction damages our social relations

2The purpose of the “Stop Phubbing” campaign is to ______.

A.help people realize the rudeness of phubbing behaviors

B.give professional advice to phubbing victims

C.persuade people to stop using mobile phones

D.encourage people to spend more time with their family

3Which of the following statement is TRUE according to the article?

A.People who often phub are more likely to make a successful politician.

B.Pointing or picking one’s nose are common symptoms of phubbers.

C.Phubbing is against human nature in that we do need real-life connections.

D.More than one third British would rather not answer a message than phub their friends.

4What is the tone of the last paragraph?

    A.serious B.humorous C.doubtful D.indifferent
