  • 22、Mona Lisa, also called Portrait of Lisa Gherardini, wife of Francesco del Giocondo, Italian La Gioconda, or French La Joconde, oil painting on a wood panel by Leonardo da Vinci, is probably the world’s most famous painting. It was painted sometime between 1503 and 1519, when Leonardo was living in Florence, and it now hangs in the Louvre Museum, Paris, attracting people throughout the world to see it in the 21st century. The sitter’s mysterious smile and her unproven identity have made the painting a source of ongoing investigation and fascination.

But at least a dozen excellent copies of the Mona Lisa exist, many of them by Leonardo’s students. One such copy at the Prado Museum in Madrid was thought to have been painted years after the original. However, during the restoration of the painting in the early 2010s, which included using advanced reflexology to examine the work beneath the surface, conservators discovered that the painting had changes that mirrored those of the original. The findings suggested that the artist—likely one of the master’s assistants—painted the copy as Leonardo worked on the Mona Lisa in his studio. Thus, “the Prado version” became the only known copy completed during Leonardo’s lifetime. Conservators cleaned the entire painting and removed its black background, revealing a detailed landscape resembling Leonardo’s version and vibrant colors, possibly arousing those of the original before the paint applied by early restorers darkened over time.

Other copies of the Mona Lisa include so-called Isleworth Mona Lisa, which some critics claim is da Vinci’s first edition. The claim was a controversial one, with several leading Leonardo scholars flatly denying it. Numerous interpretations, often referred to as Monna Vanna, also exist and were likely completed by Leonardo’s students with occasional input from their master.

In June, a copy of the Mona Lisa is said to have been sold for a record 2.9 million euros (22 million yuan) at Christie’s in Paris. The copy is believed to have been made by a follower of Leonardo da Vinci in the early 17th century and later was purchased by Harkin in 1953 from an art dealer in Nice, France, hence it got the name Heggin’s Mona Lisa. High imitation is also worth money! As the art investment market heats up. various art reproductions continue to emerge. Collectors have not shut out these fine copies, some of which have not only made it into the house, but also sold for high prices. Is it really worth it to pay a high price for an art reproduction? This issue is getting more and more attention from collectors.

【1】What can we learn about Mona Lisa in Para. 1?

A.This painting has been sold out.

    B.The works of early restorers.

【3】Why don’t collectors turn away these wonderful reproductions?

  • 23、   Last year, a team of biologists and computer scientists from Tufts University and the University of Vermont (UVM) created novel, self-healing biological machines called Xenobots 1.0. Measuring less than 1mm long and made up of 500—1,000 living cells, it could move around, and demonstrate cooperative group activities while collecting piles of micro particles.

The research team has now created a new generation—Xenobots 2.0, which move faster, and have a longer life than the first edition, and they still have the ability to work together in groups and heal themselves if damaged.

The biologists took stem cells from embryos of the African frog Xenopus (hence the name Xenobots) and allowed them to develop independently and grow into small balls, where some of the cells after a few days began to produce cilia, tiny hair-like things sticking out that move back and forth or turn around in a specific way, which gives the new round robots “legs” to move them rapidly across a surface.

“We want Xenobots 2.0 to do useful work. Right now, we're giving them simple tasks such as garbage collection in the blood, but ultimately, we're aiming for a new kind of living tool that could, for example, clean up microplastics in the ocean or pollutants in the soil.” said Michael Levin, a famous professor of Biology from Tufts University.

It turns out, the new Xenobots 2.0 are much faster and better than last year's model. They can record information to adjust the robot's actions and behaviors, and they can also repair and restore themselves if they become damaged. Healing is a natural feature of living organisms, and it is a new model system that can provide a foundation for regenerative medicine.

【1】Which advantage does the Xenobots 2.0 have over the first edition?

    A.It changes faster.

    B.It performs better.

    C.It becomes longer.

    D.It evolves more slowly.

【2】What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?

    A.The definition of Xenobots 2.0.

    B.The function of Xenobots 2.0.

    C.The movement of Xenobots 2.0.

    D.The development of Xenobots 2.0.

【3】What can Xenobots 2.0 do at present?

    A.Break down nutrients.

B.Sweep out pollutants in the soil.

    C.Collect garbage in the blood.

D.Clean up the microplastics in the ocean.

【4】On what basis will Xenobots 2.0 contribute to regenerative medicine?

    A.Recording.

    B.Healing.

    C.Memorizing.

    D.Moving

  • 24、This year marks exactly two centuries since the publication of “Frankenstein; or, The Modem Prometheus,” by Mary Shelley. Even before the invention of the electric light bulb, the author produced a remarkable work of speculative fiction that would foreshadow (预示) many ethical questions to be raised by technologies yet to come.

Today the rapid growth of artificial intelligence (Al) raises fundamental questions: “What is intelligence, identity, or consciousness? What makes humans humans?” What is being called artificial general intelligence, machines that would imitate the way humans think, continue to puzzle scientists. Yet humans remain fascinated by the idea of robots that would look, move and respond like humans, similar to those depicted on sci-fi TV series such as “Humans”. Just how people think is still far too complex to be understood, let alone reproduced, says David Eagleman, a Stanford University neuroscientist. “We are just in a situation where there are no good theories explaining what consciousness actually is and how you could ever build a machine to get there.”

But that doesn’t mean crucial ethical issues involving AI aren’t at hand. The coming use of autonomous vehicles, for example, poses thorny (棘手的) ethical questions. Human drivers sometimes must make split-second decisions. Their reactions may be a complex combination of instant reflexes, input from past driving experiences, and what their eyes and ears tell them in that moment. AI “vision” today is not nearly as sophisticated as that of humans. And to anticipate every imaginable driving situation is a difficult programming problem.

Whenever decisions are based on masses of data, “you quickly get into a lot of ethical questions,” notes Tan Kiat How, chief executive of a Singapore-based agency that is helping the government develop a voluntary code for the ethical use of Al. Along with Singapore, other governments and mega-corporations are beginning to establish their own guidelines. Britain is setting up a data ethics center India released its Al ethics strategy this spring.

On June 7 Google promised not to design or employ Al that would cause “overall harm,” or to develop Al-directed weapons or use AI for surveillance (监视) that would break international norms (规则). It also promised not to employ AI whose use would violate international laws or human rights.

While the statement is vague, it represents one starting point. So does the idea that decisions made by Al systems should be explainable, transparent, and fair.

To put it another way: How can we make sure that the thinking of intelligent machines reflects humanity’s highest values? Only then will they be useful servants and not Frankenstein’s out-of-control monster.

【1】Mary Shelley’s novel Frankenstein is mentioned because it________.

A.fascinates AI scientists all over the world

B.has remained popular for as long as 200 years

C.involves some concerns raised by Al today

    A.can hardly ever be found

    B.is still beyond our capacity

    C.causes little public concern

    D.has aroused much curiosity

A.AI’s Future: In the Hands of Tech Giants

B.Frankenstein, the Novel Predicting the Age of AI

C.The Conscience of AI: Complex but Inevitable

D.AI Shall Be Killers Once Out of Control
