二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Five years ago, Yellow-Purple tore a flexor tendon(屈肌腱), making it difficult to use her left leg. The little penguin was having a hard time walking and swimming.

Yellow-Purple lives with a large group of African penguins at Mystic Aquarium in Mystic, Connecticut. African penguins are an endangered species. They are beautiful, black and white birds that are about two feet tall when fully grown, and they are very popular with the Aquarium’s visitors.

The staff at the Aquarium made a little support boot for Yellow-Purple from plastic. This supported her left ankle and made it much easier for her to do all the things that penguins like to do. Yellow-Purple was getting along fine with her boot, but then Dr. Jen Flower, Chief Clinical Veterinarian at Mystic Aquarium, heard about 3 D printing technology. She decided to use it to help better the boot.

Luckily, Mystic Aquarium’s Vice President of Education &Conservation, Kelly Marls, knew that Mystic Middle School had recently acquired a 3D Systems printer. Kelly reached out to the school and arranged a meeting. Sue Prince, Library Media Specialist at Mystic Middle School, and seven middle school students visited Yellow-Purple to learn what was needed, and then contacted the supplier of their 3 D printer, ACT Group.

With ACT Group’s help, the students learned how to scan Yellow-Purple’s existing foot cast, then use that data to create a more efficient boot with sculpting software. The final boot design was printed on a 3D printer using multiple materials, allowing the boot to be flexible enough for comfortable movement, yet hard enough to support the injured tendon.

The students were thrilled when they saw Yellow-Purple walking almost back to normal. It was a great way to put science into practice. Celebrities like Ashton Kutcher shared Yellow-Purple’s story on Facebook, inspiring more than 1.5 million combined views.

1What can we learn about African penguins?

A.They are very large in number. B.They are dangerous species.

C.They are beautiful when young. D.They are attractive to visitors.

2Who came up with the idea of an updated support boot?

A.The ACT Group. B.Dr. Jen Flower.

    C.Kelly Matis. D.Sue Prince

3What preparation work was done before the students got the ACT Group’s help?

A.They reached school on time. B.They held a meeting to discuss the problem.

C.They paid a visit to Yellow-Purple. D.They contacted the ACT Group for supplies.

4What is the best title for this text?

A.The development of 3D printing B.A penguin benefiting from high-tech

C.An effort to put science into practice D.A software that can design

  • 22、The world is wasting the opportunity to “build back better” from the Covid-19 pandemic, and faces disastrous temperature rises of at least 2.7°C if countries fail to strengthen their climate commitments, according to a report from the UN.

Tuesday’s publication warns that countries’ current commitments would reduce carbon by only about 7.5% by 2030, far less than the 45% cut, which scientists say is needed to limit global temperature rises to 1.5°℃, the aim of the Cop26summit that opens in Glasgow this Sunday.

António Guterres, the UN secretary-general, described the findings as a “thundering wake-up call“ to world leaders. while experts called for action against fossil fuel companies.

Although more than 100 countries have promised to reach net zero emissions around mid-century, this would not be enough to avoid climate disasters, according to the UN emissions report, which examines the shortfall between countries’ intentions and actions needed on the climate. Many of the net zero commitments were found to be unclear, and unless accompanied by strict cuts in emissions this decade would allow global heating of a potentially disastrous extent.

Guterres said: “The heat is on, and as the contents of the report show, the leadership we need is off. Far off. Countries are wasting a massive opportunity to invest Covid-19 finance and recovery resources in sustainable, cost-saving, planet-saving ways. As world leaders prepare for Cop26, this report is another thundering wake-up call. How many do we need?

Inger Andersen, the director of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) said: “Climate change is no longer a future problem. It is a now problem. To stand a chance of limiting global warming to 1.5℃, we have 8 years to almost halve greenhouse gas emissions: 8 years to make the plans, put in place the policies, carry them out and deliver the cuts. The clock is ticking loudly.”

Emissions fell by about 5.4% last year during Covid lockdowns, the report found, but only about one-fifth of the economic recovery spending goes towards reducing carbon emissions. This failure to ”build back better“ despite promises by governments around the world cast doubt on the world’s willingness to make the economic shift necessary to settle the climate crisis, the UN said.

In the run-up to Cop26, countries were supposed to submit national plans to cut emissions - called nationally determined contributions (NDCs) - for the next decade, a requirement under the 2015 Paris climate agreement. But the UNEP report found only half of countries had submitted new NDCs, and some governments had presented weak plans.

    【1】Why were the findings described as a “thundering wake-up call”in Para. 3?

A.Because the world has failed to deliver on its current promises.

B.Because the serious problems were brought about by global fossil fuels.

C.Because a global temperature rise of at least 2.7°C would be a disaster.

D.Because the opportunities presented by covid-19 have been wasted.

【2】According to the author, in what circumstances is global warming avoidable?

A.New plans will be made to protect the environment.

B.Measures will be taken to reduce emissions in the coming ten years.

C.Transitions will be made in response to the global climate crisis.

D.Global sustainable environmental resources will be greatly developed.

【3】What is the author’s purpose in saying ”How many do we need?“ in Para. 5?

A.To show the number of alarm clocks required.

B.To inquire the number of the countries attending the meeting.

C.To explain the reason for the world’s wasting chances.

D.To stress the need to save energy and reduce emissions.

【4】What can be inferred from the last paragraph?

A.Few countries have submitted plans to reduce the emissions.

B.Most of the countries work under the Paris Climate Agreement.

C.Plans to cut emissions of many countries are far from satisfactory.

D.Much progress in reducing emissions has been made these years.

  • 24、Some birds are inner decorators, placing big, showy feathers (羽毛) in their nests. But rather than decorating their homes, these birds may be trying to frighten nest-stealing neighbors.

Karen Wiebe is a behavioral ecologist at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, Canada. She and her colleague Slagsvold saw birds placing large feathers on the surfaces of nests. Those feathers wouldn’t help with warmth. The researchers wondered whether the birds might be using the decorations to send a message.

For birds that nest in holes, competition for nests can be really violent. These somewhat rare holes can also hide danger because predators (掠夺者) may be hiding inside. If a nest contains feathers or other remains, it might be evidence that a predator had been there. Those holes might not be as desirable.

Wiebe and Slagsvold assumed that some birds may use feathers to create a mock (模拟的) kill site.

During spring, when nest competition is the most violent, the scientists set up pairs of nesting boxes. One box contained white feathers. The other either contained no feathers or black feathers. Inside the boxes, black feathers were more difficult to see than white ones. Using video cameras, the researchers spied on how birds reacted to the boxes. When birds took longer to enter, that suggested the animals were scared.

Birds hesitated to enter boxes with white feathers. But when feathers were in front of a nest, birds jumped right up and grabbed them. That suggested that birds weren’t afraid of the feathers themselves.

“It was really interesting to discover that birds were using a trick to help them keep their nests.” Wiebe says. When a bird leaves its nest to search for food, that opens the door for a nest stealer. “But if it can buy a little time by scaring away predators with these feathers, then it has a better chance of coming back in time to defend its nest site.”

【1】What makes the competition for nests intense among birds?

    A.The warmth of nests.

    B.The cruelty of predators.

    C.The colour of feathers.

    D.The quantity of holes.

【2】Why did scientists set up pairs of nesting boxes?

A.To prove that birds are good at decorating their nests.

B.To explore when birds compete for nests most severely.

C.To test whether birds send messages through decoration.

D.To investigate if birds are afraid of the feathers themselves.

【3】Which of the following nesting boxes are birds unwilling to enter?

A.The one with white feathers outside.

B.The one with white feathers inside.

C.The one with black feathers outside.

D.The one with black feathers inside.

【4】By writing the passage, the author intends to tell us that ________.

A.birds compete with each other for nests

B.birds’ living environment faces great risks

C.birds may scare off competitors with a trick

D.birds’ feathers can guarantee their nests safety
