二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、The 2022 FIFA World Cup kicked off, with more than 30 teams participating. In the tournament’s 92-year history, only eight countries have won: Brazil, Italy, France, Germany, Argentina, Spain, Uruguay and England.

It was the first time that the Cup had been held in the Middle East. Summer temperatures in Qatar regularly top 100 degrees, so for the safety of both athletes and audience, organizers pushed the month-long contest out to late November, when the weather is milder.

Uruguay was the first host and winner of the World Cup back in 1930. The final match played out in front of 60,000 audiences. No World Cup was held between 1938 and 1950 due to World War Ⅱ. The 1950 tournament in Brazil featured separate East and West German teams. It wasn’t until the 1994 World Cup that Germany took part as a unified team. West Germany won in 1954.

That 1950 Cup was also the first to feature England, despite soccer being an English invention. That year, Team USA beat England 1-0, though some British newspapers reported the result as USA 1, England 10, as editors believed the real score had a typo. Both sides believed it would be an easy win for England, and double-digit (两位数) goals were expected. This match is considered by many as one of the greatest upsets in World Cup history.

The first women’s World Cup started many decades after the men’s, in 1991. That first one was held in China. Our team is so dominant that we have won half of all the World Cups to date. The women play every four years, just like the men, but not on the same schedule. The next women’s World Cup will be held in 2023 in Australia and New Zealand.

【1】Why was the 2022 World Cup put off to winter?

    A.To satisfy audience.

    B.To be a special match.

    C.To avoid high temperatures.

D.To meet the requirements of the players.

【2】How is the text mainly organized?

    A.In time order.

    B.In space order.

    C.By explanation.

    D.By comparison.

【3】What does the underlined word “typo” mean in paragraph 4?

    A.A typing error.

    B.A spelling error.

    C.A program error.

    D.A mathematical error.

【4】What can we learn about the women’s World Cup from the last paragraph?

A.China won the first women’s World Cup.

B.China has hosted 50% of the women’s World Cups.

C.It is arranged on a different timetable from the men’s.

D.It is held in the same country as the men’s every four years.

  • 22、Take ToursUSA>East Coast ToursNew York, NY>2-Day Niagara Falls Tour from New York or New Jersey

This was a good tour in terms of value of money and overall experience provided. Only one negative experience is stopping at a food court at “One Niagara Welcome Center”. It is totally stealing.

    I recommend this tour!

    _________________________________________________________________________________

Tour guide was very helpful. However, the money charged for admission fee is way more than the actual admission cost. I was charged $109 per adult and $ 65 for kids for a family of four. This is not correct. This money should be refunded as you already charge $ 12 per day per person as the service fee.

    _________________________________________________________________________________

It was my 2nd trip with Take Tours for Niagara and it was great to be back with an awesome experience. What I would like to highlight is that there should be more time given for staying after Maid of the Mist since there is a lot to walk and explore around the Niagara Falls.

    _________________________________________________________________________________

Our guide Kun was great at his job. Explained all the details very well. He made sure there was plenty of time to explore all places. He gave wakeup call in the morning and followed up with everyone to make sure everyone was on schedule. Restroom breaks, breakfast/ lunch/ snack/ dinner breaks planned very well. I definitely recommend this package for the price offered.

    _________________________________________________________________________________

【1】What does the most recent post complain about?

    A.A food court.

    B.A tour guide.

    C.The poor service.

    D.Extra admission fee.

【2】Who is a repeat customer of Take Tours?

    A.Mohit.

    B.Ankur.

    C.Bhatt.

    D.Uttam.

【3】What’s the purpose of the posts?

    A.To popularize a tour route.

    B.To recommend a travel agent.

    C.To complain about tour guides.

    D.To comment on travel services.

  • 23、AI can identify rare genetic disorders

People with genetic syndromes (基因遗传综合症) sometimes have revealing facial features, but using them to make a quick and cheap diagnosis can be tricky when there are hundreds of possible conditions they may have. A new neural(神经的) network that analyses photographs of faces can help doctors narrow down the possibilities.

Gurovich at biotechnology firm FDNA in Boston and his team built a neural network to look at the gestalt (形态)– or overall impression of faces and return a list of the 10 genetic syndromes a person is most likely to have.

They trained the neural network, called DeepGestalt, on 17,000 images correctly labeled to correspond to more than 200 genetic syndromes. The team then asked the AI to identify potential genetic disorders from a further 502 photographs of people with such conditions. It included the correct answer among its list of 10 responses 91 per cent of the time.

Gurovich and his team also tested the AI’s ability to distinguish between different genetic mutations (突变) that can lead to the same syndrome. They used images of people with Noonan syndrome, which can result from mutations in one of five genes. DeepGestalt accurately identified the genetic source of the physical appearance 64 per cent of the time.

“It’s clearly not perfect,” says Gurovich. “But it’s still much better than humans are at trying to do this.”

As the system makes its assessments, the facial regions that were most helpful in the determination are highlighted and made available for doctors to view. This helps them to understand the relationships between genetic make-up and physical appearance.

The fact that the diagnosis is based on a simple photograph raises questions of privacy. If faces can reveal details about genetics, then employers and insurance providers could, in principle, secretly use such techniques to discriminate against people with a high probability of having certain disorders.

However, Gurovich says the tool will only be available to doctors. Christoffer Nellaker at the University of Oxford says this technique could bring significant benefits for those with genetic syndromes.

“This is not fundamentally different information than we’re sharing walking down the street, or we’re happy to share with Facebook or Google,” he says. “But questioning the data in this way means you can obtain information about health or disease status.

“The real value here is that for some of these extreme rare diseases, the process of diagnosis can be many, many years. This kind of technology can help narrow down the search space and then be confirmed through checking genetic markers,” he says.

For some diseases, this kind of technology will cut down the time to diagnose thoroughly. For others, it could perhaps add a means of finding other people with the disease and, in turn, help find new treatments or cures.

1What is the purpose of Gurovich’s neural network?

    A.To test the AI’s ability.

    B.To analyze photographs of faces.

C.To help doctors reduce the range of the diagnosis.

D.To research the overall impression of patients’ faces.

2What disadvantage does Deep Gestalt bring?

A.It will probably involve in the people’s privacy.

B.It cannot provide information about health or disease.

C.The diagnosis based on a simple photograph is not accurate.

D.It could perhaps add a means of finding other people with the disease.

3What can we learn from the passage?

A.The result of the assessments for this system is perfect.

B.Deep Gestalt can correctly label 200 genetic syndromes.

C.It seems doubtful to use AI to distinguish genetic mutations.

D.This kind of technology can speed up the diagnostic process.

4What is the author’s attitude to this technique?

    A.Supportive. B.Puzzled.

    C.Doubtful. D.Negative.

  • 24、Pigs may have a decided lack of table manners, but they are otherwise one of the more intelligent animals around.

Further evidence of their intellect has come from a new study that examined how well pigs might do with a simple video game and joystick. Given sufficient motivation, pigs know how to play.

Candace Croney of Purdue University published the results in the journal Frontiers in Psychology. Four pigs — Hamlet, Omelet, Ebony, and Ivory were taken in front of a screen that featured a simple game where a cursor (光标) could be directed into a wall with a joystick. If the pig was able to hit the wall with the cursor, they’d be rewarded with food.

All of the pigs had some success, but there was a clear difference in skill. Two of the pigs, Hamlet and Omelet, found the game’s increasing difficulty with two or more walls hard to navigate (指引). Ivory was clearly better than Ebony, hitting the wall 76 percent of the time to Ebony’s 34 percent.

Their success may have been restricted somewhat by their long mouth. Because their long mouths are right in front of their eyes when they look directly at the screen. They may have caught glimpses of the screen only before and after moving the joystick, not during. That could mean the pigs had to rely on some short-term memory to understand the movement of the cursor.

Curiously, the pigs continued playing even after the food reward was taken away. Researchers gave them gentle verbal encouragement to continue.

This isn’t Croney’s first study with pigs. Back in 1997, she focused her doctoral work on pig cognizance (认知), including a task in which pigs used a joystick to move one of several shapes across the screen to fit the single shape that matched it. Such experiments demonstrate that pigs appear to understand the connection between moving the joystick and the cursor, and that doing so successfully results in a reward.

【1】What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?

    A.What pigs can learn.

    B.Why pigs are intelligent.

    C.How the study is conducted.

    D.Why researchers do the study.

【2】Why do the pigs fail to see the cursor while moving the joystick?

A.Their long mouths block the view.

B.The joystick is far from the screen.

C.The cursor only appears after moving the joystick.

D.They concentrate on the movements of the joystick.

【3】What do we know about pigs from this text?

    A.They are interested in food.

B.They are intelligent in some ways.

C.They are equally skilled at playing games.

D.They don’t play games without food.

【4】What is the best title of this text?

    A.Pigs Lack Table Manners

    B.Pigs Have Good Memories

C.Pigs Can Be Taught to Play Video Games

D.Pigs Are More Intelligent than Other Animals

  • 26、Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.

Students in the United States are assigned to classes for different goals. Those in the more advantaged tracks and programs not only encounter more curricular material; they are also typically asked to learn the material differently. They have opportunities to think, investigate, and create. They are challenged to explore. In Keeping Track, Jeannie Oakes describes the way in which teachers differently frame their work for students in different tracks.

Teachers of high-track classes describe their class goals in terms of higher-order thinking and independent learning, for example: “Logical thought process”; “Scientific reasoning and logic”. Students’ view of what they learned in class reflect these goals. High-track students said they learned: “To understand concepts and ideas and to experiment with them, and to work independently”; “How to express myself through writing and compose my thoughts in a logical manner and express my creativity.”

Conversely, in low-track classes, teachers described few academic goals for their students and none related to thinking logically, critically or independently. They often focused on low-level skills, for example: “Better use of time”; “Punctuality and self-discipline”; “Good work habits”. And low-track students said they had learned how to: “Behave in class”; “How to shut up”; “How to listen and follow the directions of the teacher.”

This phenomenon is widespread. In his research in New York City, Jonathan Kozol described how, within integrated schools, minority children were disproportionately assigned to special education class that occupy small corners and split classrooms, while gifted and talented classrooms occupied the most splendid spaces filled with books and computers, where they learned, in the children’s words, “logical thinking,” and “problem solving”. Students were recommended for these classes by their teachers and parents as well as by their test scores. Kozol wrote in his notes,“Six girls, four boys, nine white, one Chinese. I am glad they have this class. But what about the others? Aren’t there ten black children in the school who could enjoy this also?”
