21、No matter what your goals are in life, there is one great law that you need to obey in order to be successful: No one else is going to climb the ladder (梯子) of success for you. 【1】 Prom the day you leave your parents’ house, you are responsible for your life and the choices you make.
If you want a better life, you need to make better decisions. 【2】 However, it doesn’t change anything. Only you can change your life by changing the choices you make. Take responsibility for everything in your life. Even if it’s not in your direct control, you can always choose how you respond.
【3】 If you choose what is fun and easy over what is necessary, you will never reach the levels of success and happiness you are capable of achieving in your life. That’s because every great victory requires great sacrifice. If success was easy, everybody would be success.
There is nothing that you can’t achieve with hard work. People often think that their lives will suddenly change through some magical event in the future. 【4】 Your life changes only to the extent that you change. Nothing will ever change if you don’t change what you do daily.
A great way to actively create your future is to ask yourself: If I already achieved my goals, how would I act on a daily basis? What books would I read, how often would I work out, and how would I spend my time at the office? 【5】
A.But that is not the case.
B.No one else is responsible for your life.
C.Now these questions seem like magic to you.
D.Nothing else can be the drive for your success.
E.Once you answer these questions, you know what to do.
F.The biggest enemy to success is the path of least resistance.
G.You can blame other people for your lack of happiness all life long.
22、 Esports (electronic sports) are organized competitions where players — often referred to as “athletes” — face off against each other in video games. They are not just games in a sense. Actually, they are a sport that can improve the players’ thinking ability, hand-eye coordination, willpower and team spirit.
The esports industry has experienced significant growth in recent years around the world, though it’s still in the nascent stage, which means it has huge growth potential going forward.
While the assumption is that esports are only a recent phenomenon, in reality the first esports-like event was held back in 1972, when some Stanford University students competed against one another in the game Spacewar. The prize? A year-long subscription to Rolling Stone magazine.
The ’80s saw the first true videogame tournament, with over 10,000 players gathering for the Space Invaders Championship. However, most of the period saw that players focused on beating each other’s highest scores rather than competing in organized tournaments.
As gaming became more popular, the ’90s became the first decade when esports (a term which wasn’t yet coined) began to really take off, with companies such as Nintendo and Sega holding professional gaming tournaments. This is also when we began to see money becoming a factor in professional gaming. But it is the 1997 Red Annihilation Quake tournament that is considered the world’s first real esports event. Only a few weeks later, the Cyberathlete Professional League was formed — an organization which is considered a pioneer of esports.
Due to the normalization of gaming and the Internet (along with technological advances), the real surge ( 激增 ) of esports came in the recent decade. It was then that we began seeing what we now know to be modern-day esports. As streaming platforms such as YouTube took off, people began to show interest in not only playing videogames but watching them too. Popular tournaments now sell out stadiums and professional players can earn millions from prize money, advertising and salaries.

23、 Teens and preteens who start the school day really early tend to weigh slightly more than those who start later. That’s the finding of a new study of nearly 30, 000 Canadians between the ages of 10 and 18. These data are the latest evidence that starting school too early can harm health.
“We know from earlier studies that when school starts too early, kids can’t get the sleep they need,” says Genevieve Gariepy. She works at Mcgill University in Montreal, Canada. Getting too little sleep can put kids at risk for a number of problems. Sleepy teens are more likely to be overweight, to have trouble concentrating and to struggle in school. They also are at higher risk of feeling depressed, using alcohol or drugs and getting in car accidents.
As an epidemiologist (流行病学家), Gariepy is interested in patterns of disease. She studies teen obesity,or extreme overweight. In this study, she wanted to know how earlier school start times might be linked to weight.
“Overweight and obesity in adolescents is a big problem in North America,” she says. The number of overweight kids has grown over the past 30 years. About one in three U. S. and Canadian teens are now overweight or obese. Kids who don’t sleep enough may be at higher risk. So Gariepy decided to find more about the impact of school start times.
Her team collected start times of 362 Canadian schools and found that among “6 to 10” graders, those who started school earlier tended to be slightly heavier for their height. Every 10-minute delay in school start time was linked, on average, to a slightly lower weight among students who were the same sex, age and height. But it’s not clear that changing school start time would help heavier kids lose weight. To know for sure, researchers would want to compare the same kids before and after changing to a later school start time.

A.To introduce the main topic.

A.How to rid adolescents of being overweight.
B.The links between school start times and teen obesity.
C.Why more and more students are becoming obese.
D.The most suitable sleep time for school students.
【3】What can we infer about the study of Gariepy and her team?
A.A 10-minute delay is enough. B.Schools may value its conclusion.
C.Its conclusion is reliable. D.More work remains to be done
【4】What can be a suitable title of this text?
A.Experts Worry about the Health of Adolescents.
B.Overweight Becomes Common among teenagers.
C.Study Links Weight to School Starting Time.

24、Astronauts on the International Space Station (ISS) may soon be able to turn their used forks and knives into tools and satellite parts.
Tethers Unlimited Inc., an aerospace technology company, has developed a system that combines a waste recycling machine with a 3D printer.
Astronauts will put waste items made of plastic into the recycling machine, called the Poistrusion Recycler. When they press a button, the Recycler will melt down the plastic and turn it into 3D filament (长丝).
The filament will e used in a 3D printer on the ISS-called the Refabricator-to make tools, spare parts and satellite components.
The waste will come from packaging materials, food containers, trays and eating utensils (器具) used on the ISS. Astronaut currently use disposable wet wipes to clean their food containers and utensils. The used wipes are stored as trash (垃圾), and replacement wipes must be sent up to the ISS on cargo missions.
By recycling old food containers and utensils, astronauts will reduce the amount of trash they produce. To get rid of trash from the ISS, astronaut load it into empty cargo capsules (航天舱) and release it into space. The capsules burn up when they enter Earth’s atmosphere.
Turning trash into useful new items will also help NASA save money because astronauts will need fewer supplies. It costs about $ 6,000 for every kilogram launched into orbit. These benefits will be even more important for longer missions in the future-such as the two-year journey to Mars. Astronauts will be able to recycle old waste materials into new tools and parts as they need them.
Tethers have successfully tested the systems in its laboratory. They will test it on the ISS in late 2018. The company is also developing a version of the system for use here on Earth.

B. Send the trash to Mars.
C. Take the trash to the earth.

A. It can save some space for the ISS.
