  • 22、Hi, I’m Neil Harbisso. I come from a place where the sky is always grey, where flowers are always grey, and where television is still in black and white.

I actually come from a world where color doesn’t exist. I was born with achromatopsia. I was born completely color-blind. So I’ve never seen color, and don’t know what it looks like. But since the age of 21, I can hear color thanks to a magic electronic eye called “eyeborg”: a color sensor between my eyes connected to a chip(芯片) installed at the back of my head that transforms color frequencies into sound frequencies that I hear through my bone.

I’ve had the electronic eye permanently attached to my head and I’ve been listening to colors nonstop since 2004. So I find it completely normal now to hear colors all the time.

Since I started to hear color, my life has changed significantly. Art galleries have become concert halls. I can hear a Picasso. And supermarkets have become like night clubs. I love how they sound.

My sense of beauty has changed. Someone might look very beautiful but sound terrible, and someone might sound very harmonious but look awful. So I find it really exciting to create sound portraits(画像) of people. Instead of drawing the shape of someone’s face I write down the different notes I hear when I look at them, and then I send them an mp3 of their face. Each face sounds different. I can even give face concerts now, concerts where I play the audience’s faces. The good thing about doing this is that if the concert doesn’t sound good, it’s their fault.

I also found out that things I thought were colorless are not colorless at all. Cities are not grey. Lisbon is yellow turquoise(宝石绿); London is very golden red…and humans are not black and white. Human skins range from light shades of orange to very dark shades of orange. We are all orange.

If we extend our senses, we will consequently extend our knowledge.

【1】We can infer from the article that people with achromatopsia ____________.

    A.suffer from blindness

B.have a good sense of colors

C.are not able to see colors

D.like to go to concert halls and supermarkets

【2】What does the author mean by saying “Art galleries have become concert halls”?

A.Art galleries have been changed into various sounds.

B.Works at the art galleries are created by great musicians.

C.Art galleries are filled with noisy people.

D.The author now likes art galleries as much as concert halls.

【3】Which of the following statements is NOT correct?

A.Neil developed a rare disease in his childhood.

B.The eyeborg produces sounds based on shades of colors.

C.Neil will use the eyeborg for the rest of his life.

D.In Neil’s mind, all people are orange.

【4】What is the best title for the passage?

    A.Eyeborg – a real life saver.

    B.I listen to color.

    C.Sense the world.

D.Art galleries turned into concert halls.

One of those big social networking sites, Facebook, has attracted over 58 million members. Commentator Melody Cramer is no longer one of them. Here is what she shares with us about her story.

I deleted all 1,281 of my coworkers, secondgrade classmates and people who I don’t know at all. I shut down my account, completely. I’m 30, and I’ve been on Facebook since March of 2004, which makes me one of the website’s earliest users.

At first, I used it obsessively. If I had a free moment, I’d log on to see whether my friends had updated their profiles. I’d sit alone scrolling through these updates and then run into someone at a coffee shop and have nothing to say because I already knew everything about them, and they knew everything about me.

In November, I went to my tenyear high school reunion and was not pleasantly surprised. Lauren became a model, Josh went to law school, Dina was a teacher. I hadn’t talked to any of them since graduation, but I knew exactly what they were doing, both now and last week. But lately, Im overwhelmed(应接不暇). Facebook opened up to everyone, not just college students, and my coworkers started to join, which meant they now knew what I was doing when I wasnt at work.

And as a rule: you can NOT make friends with your coworkers because then they’ll ask you the next day. But I thought we were friends. And you are friends but not the kind of friends who tell each other what they do outside of work. So now the people you work with can see what you did last night, and you’re constantly worrying what people might say about what you did last night instead of actually doing anything tonight. So Iquit. I became a 30yearold Luddite, a person who is strongly against technology development. I’ve retuned to how the world worked when I was 20, before I knew when my friends and coworkers were counting down the seconds to vacation or entering a complicated relationship. Im hoping life will be a lot simpler now. Peoplewill be more mysterious now that I actually have to talk to them to find out their favorite books or hobbies orneurosis(神经症). I dont know when my college roommate goes to the supermarket, and I think I’m a better person for not knowing. In fact, you could say getting off a social network was the best thing I’ve done thisweek.

1Melody Cramer decided to quit Facebook mainly because ______.

    A. she thought it wasted too much time

    B. she was afraid of the strangers on her account

    C. she was tired of exposing her life to coworkers

    D. she thought it made realworld life less interesting

2We can learn from the passage that Melody Cramer ______.

    A. had a 10year membership of Facebook

    B. used to be very objected to Facebook

    C. was unpleasant to attend high school reunion

    D. was one of the co-founders of Facebook

3Which of the following about Melody Cramer is TRUE?

    A. She owes her communication skills to Facebook.

    B. She wishes she could be several years younger.

    C. She prefers to face her friends and co-worders in reality.

    D. She is no longer curious about anything around her.

4The best title for this passage can be _____.

    A. Addiction to Facebook

    B. Farewell to Facebook

    C. Friends Online

    D. A Simpler Life

  • 24、Our plan was to drive into Cambridge, catch the 7:34 train to Liverpool Street Station, then to separate and meet again for lunch. We should have arrived at Liverpool at 9:19, but due to a typical London fog, the train had to move along so slowly that it was not until 10:30 that it got there. In spite of our late arrival, Joan, my wife’s sister, decided that she would go to see the Crown Jewels in the Tower of London while we went shopping. It was only after her sister had disappeared into the fog that my wife realized that we hadn’t decided where we should meet for lunch. Since I had our three tickets for the concert in my pocket, this was indeed a problem. There seemed to be nothing we could do except taking a taxi to the Tower of London, and try to find her there. Needless to say, we didn’t find her.

It was now one o’clock, and the concert began at 2:30. “Perhaps she will think of waiting outside the concert hall,” suggested my wife hopefully. By this time the fog was so thick that road traffic had to stop, and the only way to get there was by underground railway. Hand in hand we felt our way along the road to where we thought the nearest station should be. An hour later we were still trying to find it. Just as I was about to lose my temper completely when we met a blind man tapping his way confidently through the fog. With his help we found Tower Hill tube station just fifty yards down the road.

By now it was far too late even to try to get to the concert hall before the performance began at 2:30, so we decided to return to Cambridge. It took seven long hours instead of the usual two to make that journey. Nor were we able to get any food and drink on the train. Tired and hungry we finally reached home at ten, opening the door to the sound of the telephone bell. It was Joan; she had seen the Crown Jewels, had managed to get another ticket for concert, and had had a wonderful dinner at a restaurant near the hotel where she decided to stay for the night. Now she was ringing to discover whether we had had an equally successful day.

1Why was Joan separated from her sister and her brother-in-law?

A.they could not see each other because of the fog.

B.Joan had not seen Crown Jewels.

C.They planned to do different things until lunch time.

D.The writer didn’t want to go to the concert.

2What did the writer plan to do in the afternoon?

A.Go to the concert. B.See the Crown Jewels.

    C.Return to Cambridge. D.Go shopping.

3The reason why they didn’t all meet for lunch was that _______.

A.They lost their way in the fog

B.they forgot to make necessary arrangement

C.they waited at different places and didn’t meet each other

D.the couple couldn’t find the underground station

4It’s quite clear that for Joan the trip to London had been ________.

A.spilt by the fog B.quite tiring

    C.rather disappointing D.very enjoyable

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

The homemade book bag was sprawled (随意放在) across my bed. It appeared to have taken over the entire room. I closed my eyes for a second, trying to imagine the large shoulder bag gone. I opened my eyes again. It was still there. I knew that my mom had spent all day happily sewing. Worse still, I realized that the fabric (布料) was actually left over from a toy horse that my mom made for me when I was a baby. My mother had even quilted (缝制) little running horses along each side and wrote my name on one side to make certain that no one would be confused as to who owned this furry monster.

“Do you like it? If you don’t like it, you don’t have to use it,” Mom said.

“Oh no, Mom, I love it,” I lied, picking the bag up and rubbing (摩挲) the soft fabric against my face. The last thing I wanted to do was to hurt her feelings.

The next day I was to start seventh grade at a new school. I was nervous and excited. That first day at school I heard the whispers. “Have you seen the new girl? Did you see that big furry bag?” Then there were giggles.

Because I started school in the middle of the year, all of the lockers had been assigned to other kids. There was no storage available for me, so I was forced to haul all my stuff around in the oversized fuzzy bag. Wild stories flew back and forth about what I kept in the bag that never left my side. Drugs? some kids wondered. Clothes? Is she homeless?

There was nothing interesting in that bag, just my coat during cold weather, school books, papers and pens. Eventually, most students pretty much ignored me, but some of the kids teased me about the fuzzy horse bag. People grabbed at it, pretended to pat it like a dog and tried to toss their trash into it. My teachers didn’t seem to notice, probably because I didn’t ever complain or ask for help.

As the year progressed, I started to hate that bag. I blamed all my problems on it. I felt helpless and alone, miserable, and homesick for California and my old friends.

One day toward the end of the school year, my math teacher assigned each student a partner to work with on word problems. I was told to work with Debbie, a popular redheaded girl who was in several of my classes.

    注意:1. 所续写短文的词数应为150左右;

    2. 续写部分分为两段,每段开头语已为你写好。

She smiled and waved me over toward her desk, so I grabbed my bag and quietly moved toward her.
