二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   If you wish to become a better reader, here are four important things to remember about reading rate:

    ● Knowing why you are reading or what you are reading to find out will often help you to know whether to read rapidly or slowly.

    ● Some things should be read slowly throughout. Examples are directions for making or doing something, arithmetic problems, science and history books, which are full of important information. You must read such things slowly to remember each important step and understand each important idea.

    ● Some things should be read rapidly throughout. Examples are simple stories meant for enjoyment, news letters from friends, pieces of news from local, or home-town, papers, telling what is happening to friends and neighbors.

    ● In some of your reading, you must change your speed from fast to slow and slow to fast, as you go along. You will need to read certain pages rapidly and then slow down and do more careful reading when you come to important ideas which must be remembered.

1The underlined word "rate" in the first sentence means _______.

    A.fast. B.slow. C.speed. D.skill.

    2How fast should we read?

A.The faster, the better. B.The more slowly, the better.

  • 22、Ben walked quietly. He wanted to surprise the hunter. But then, what would he do?

Suddenly he heard a bird’s wings beating the dry grass. Ben moved quickly toward the sound.

He saw a colored head… the head of a beautiful bird. The bird did not move until Ben came close. Then it tried to fly away, but one wing was broken.

Ben lifted the bird and held it close against his body. The bird fought to escape, but soon lay quietly in Ben’s arms.

Ben decided to take the bird home and fix its broken wing so that it could fly again.

He was almost out of the woods when he heard the hunter behind him.

You just found that bird? the hunter asked.

    Yes, Ben answered.

    It is mine!

Ben was afraid and tried to answer, but his mouth was too dry to speak. Nevertheless, he wetted his lips and said, No.

I shot him and I say he is mine!

But he is not dead yet, Ben answered, and besides, anything on my land belongs to me.

The hunter looked down at the little man and smiled.________

Bens voice shook with both fear and anger. I own this land. There are signs everywhere that say, No hunting.

No need to get angry, mister, the hunter said, Control yourself.

There was something threatening in the mans cool quiet voice. And he had a gun. His arms were free and Bens were not.

The hunter stepped closer and said, Give me that bird!

Ben was white with anger, No! he answered. His eye glasses became wet and he had to look over the top of them to see the other man.

Give me the bird and I will go away, the hunter said.

You get off my land, Ben told him. Get off right now you do not belong here!

The man’s face got red. Mister, he said, I have been hunting here all my life. I grew up here.

That is a thing of the past. Ben said. I do not know who you are and I do not care. I own this place now and I'm telling you to leave. You go back through the woods and get off my land!

Now look, mister, the hunter said, be reasonable.

    The hunter raised his gun.

A cold wind blew across Bens face. He looked into the hunter’s gray eyes. Ben was frightened. It was not too late, he thought. He could still give the bird to the hunter and return safely home that would end this whole ugly business.

The bird struggled weakly and made a wild, strange noise.

Then Ben knew he could never give this bird to the hunter. This feeling gave Ben great strength, and he was no longer afraid.

I will never let you kill this bird, he said. Get away from here. If you try to take this bird, I will fight… you have a gun and you are bigger, but that does not worry me. You will never get this bird… you will have to kill me first.

The two men looked at each other. Ben’s fear returned. His knees began to shake and felt sick. Yet he stood straight, wondering what would happen next.

They stood close to each other for a long time. The woods are strangely quiet. Then the hunters rough voice broke the silence.

You are a fool. And then to Bens surprise, he slowly walked away.

Ben watched until he was gone. His arms hurt, his body felt wet and cold.

1Why did the hunter smile when saying Say, who are you (Paragraph 13)?

    A. He was amused at Bens reply and interested in him.

    B. He wanted to confirm Bens identity in a friendly way.

    C. He looked down on Ben and thought his reply ridiculous.

    D. He meant to be friendly enough to get the bird from Ben.

2What strengthened Bens determination never to give the bird to the hunter?

    A. His strong dislike of the hunter.

    B. His firm confidence in himself.

    C. His ownership of this piece of land.

    D. His concern and sympathy for the bird.

  • 23、   Bats have long been one of the most feared creatures in the animal kingdom. Many pop culture associations with them are related to vampire men tempting women in order to suck their blood or witches putting evil curses on innocent individuals.

Although these associations are complete misunderstandings, bats do have a dark side as a dangerous disease carrier. These flying mammals can carry a number of deadly diseases such as rabies and more recently Ebola. This has led many to wonder why we should even care about them.

Sure, there is good reason to be exceptionally cautious if you come into contact with bats. However, there is no denying the fact that bats play a significant role in keeping a balanced ecosystem.

Many organic farmers have learned about the benefits of having bats nearby to help manage the pests that show up without pesticides. One brown bat — about the size of a human thumb can consume about 600 mosquitoes and other unwanted insects within an hour. They make for a fantasticalmost essential, addition to pest management on any farm.

Even large government organizations have realized the economic benefits of bats. The United States Geological Survey estimates that bat contributions to pest management save the country at least 3.7 billion dollars per year. Without them, we would likely experience a sharp drop in food production, which would eventually make its way into our weekly grocery bills.

As if this were not enough of an ecosystem service we receive, bats are also of great importance to a variety of plant species that are preferential to its pollination. Otherwise, these plants would decrease their ability to reproduce by at least 50 percent.

A number of plant products consumed by humans fall into this preferential pollination category. Some popular foods include mangoes, bananas, peaches and guavas. Additionally, the agave plant, which is used to make tequila, is completely dependent on bat pollinators for reproduction.

Bats are major contributors to our society. They are in the best interest of the international community to protect and even to promote. Amid significant fears housed by the general public, the fact is that we need them more than most of us imagine.

1Why should we be cautious when we contact bats?

A.They are aggressive. B.They bring bad luck.

C.They carry diseases. D.They stay in the dark.

    2What are paragraphs 4, 5, 6, 7 mainly about?

A.Our care about bats can never be too much. B.Bats make unusual contributions to us.

C.Farming is simply impossible without bats. D.Mosquitoes are a big threat to farming.

3Who are the target readers of the passage?

A.The general public. B.The pop culture lovers.

    C.The mass farmers. D.The environmentalists.

4What can be a suitable title for the passage?

A.Bats Are Misunderstood B.Creatures Do Wonders

C.Protection Is Under Way D.We Humans Need Bats

  • 24、I regularly train at a local boxing gym and I’m lucky enough to meet an amazing man, Adrian Charter. Adrian comes to the gym to train, just like me. The difference is, I’m 31 years old, and Adrian is 72!

I watched Adrian as he was training, early on a Sunday morning, and he was hitting the punching bag harder and quicker than most men in their twenties would. Adrian was a former boxer whose last professional fight was in 1972. Even though he has stopped competing as a boxer, his discipline(纪律) still makes him stick to a training rule.

It simply amazed me as to how a 72-year-old man could train so hard. Believe me, boxing is one of the most difficult sports on the earth, needing much patience, skill, and effort.

What surprised me even more was that a few days earlier he did some running. He ran 9 kilometers. He does this on a regular basis. For me, I can run 5 kilometers at most.

When I questioned him about how he kept such discipline, he calmly replied, “It is all in my mind.”

I thought about it for a moment. If discipline can push a 72-year-old man to train so hard and enjoy it, could I imagine how discipline could serve every single human being on the earth? Right at this point, as you read this story, please pause and ask yourself, “What is my level of discipline?”

Adrian’s example told me that the power of discipline will get us to the finishing line! The bigger the challenge is, the more our discipline can serve us and the sweeter the taste of success will be!

1The author noticed Adrian Charter mostly because Adrian Charter _______ .

    Awas a famous former boxer

Bwas the oldest in the boxing gym

    AIt has high requirements.

    BIt has strict training rules.

CIt has a limit to people’s age.

3The underlined sentence in the last paragraph probably means “______ ”.

ARome was not built in a day

    Bno pains, no gains

Cfailure is the mother of success

    Dearly birds can catch worms

4What can be the best title for the text?
